Purpose of Conferencing

Purpose of Career Exploration

Through career exploration, we are exposed to new ideas, people and activities that help students relate what they do in school, as well as other experiences, to the world of work.

Students who are actively involved in this type of exploration are often more motivated, achieve higher in school and find making decisions about college and work easier.

CAREER EXPLORATIONA Life Long Process

The average person can find 100-1000 occupations that fit in the shaded triangular area

where these 3 factors overlap. In other words

“THERE ISN’T ONE RIGHT CAREER THAT FITS YOU PERFECTLY, RATHER THERE ARE SEVERAL THAT FIT YOU WELL.

POST SECONDARY PLANNINGHow to do a School Search on Family Connection

TO DO A SCHOOL SEARCH USING YOUR TOP 4 CRITERIA① Click on the “College” tab and select “School Search” from the options listed.

② Read the directions and choose the topics that are your top criteria items first.

③ At any time during this process you may click on “Show Matches”

④ Once matches are shown, students have the option to click on the schools they want to research further.

⑤ If the student is interested in continuing to view info about a school at a later time on Family Connection, click on “pick” to the left of the school. This will move this school into the student’s folder called “Colleges I’m Thinking About”

• Compare College Data

• Selecting Colleges to Apply

Page 11: Welcome to the Transition To Tomorrow Junior Conference Information Session

How Many College Applications• (3) REACH: These are schools with highly selective admissions. Your

grades and scores are below the averages for these schools. When you study the admissions data, you find that there's a possibility you'll get in, but it's a bit of a long shot. Be realistic here.

• (3) MATCH: When you look at the profiles for these colleges, your academic record and test scores are right in line with the averages. You feel that you measure up favorably with typical applicants for the school and that you have a decent chance of being admitted. Be sure to keep in mind that identifying a school as a "match" does not mean you will be accepted.

• (2) SAFETY: These are schools where your academic record and scores are measurably above the average of admitted students. Realize that highly selective schools are never safety schools, even if your scores are above the averages.
