Sacred Heart Welcome to the Parish Community of
SACRED HEART PARISH
2016 SERVICE PROJECT
Tenth Annual Love, in the Heart of Christ
Love, in the Heart of Christ is an annual parish-wide volunteer project where parishioners assist other parishioners with projects such as leaf raking, yard work, gutter cleaning, window washing, small household repairs and painting, house/garage/basement cleaning, etc. This is a great opportunity to meet other parishioners and provide assistance to others - - and as you can see from the pictures, LOTS OF FUN!!
CHANGES FROM PRIOR YEARS
TWO DAYS To expand opportunities for those with Sunday conflicts (Dowling Pancake Breakfast and Spanish Mass) we have added an additional day.
Saturday, October 29, (9 a.m. - 12 noon) volunteer opportunity.
Sunday, October 30, (1 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.) Sunday also includes: Mass at 11:15 and Chili Supper / Fellowship 2 - 5 in Parish Center for all volunteers (both days) and Project families.
TEAMS It is way more fun to work with others!!! So, rather than assigning one family to one project - - volunteers will work as TEAMS (approx 6 adults plus their children) to handle their assigned projects as a group. Sign-up for one or both days. To accomplish this, we need TEAM LEADERS - - Only skills required is a willingness to be the point of contact for your team and communicate with your team members.

ADORATION Adoration will be the second Tuesday this October because our priest will be at a workshop the first week. The Exposition of
the Blessed Sacrament will occur after 8:00 am Mass & reposition will be at 7:00 pm. Our next opportunity for Adoration will be Tuesday, October 11th. You are welcome to stop in anytime from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. Please use the North Church Doors -
the other doors will be locked. In the event of a funeral, Adoration will be suspended for the duration of the funeral and will
resume after the funeral for the remainder of the day. For more information, visit the Sacred Heart website under “worship”.
COME AND PRAY FOR AMERICA Our country is in need of prayers, healing and understanding. Please join us in the parish for the rosary at 6:15 on Monday
evenings. Please extend an invitation to neighbors and friends. Enter through the north doors of the sanctuary.
Some of us have shorter fuses than others. But all of us have those little aggravations that build up – and before we
know it – burst. Whether you stew and simmer on the inside or find yourself breathlessly yelling at a complete stranger
(or loved one), your impatience can lead to a whole lot of stress. Learning to be more patient has a slew of benefits,
including helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Patience also helps you be more present in the moment. And patience
prevents you from pummeling your boss or loved ones with unpleasant remarks. Fortunately, patience isn’t some innate
virtue. It’s a skill you can practice and master.
Patience is so important that Jesus Christ, our model in all virtues, said: “By your patience you will save your souls.” One
pious soul prayed in desperation: “Lord, give me patience and right now!” Maybe this has been your prayer for the last few years!
Our patience can be tested by various times and circumstances, in season and out of season. The failure of health, economic set-backs, family
members that could put the holy Job to the test, weather extremes, failed and broken relationships, and even God. Sometimes it seems as if God
is extremely distant, does not seem to hear our prayers, or at least seems to be uninterested or indifferent to our pleadings. All of the above can
try our patience.
Patience doesn’t mean passivity or resignation, but power. It’s an emotionally freeing practice of waiting, watching, and knowing when to act. To
many people, when you say, “Have patience,” it feels unreasonable and inhibiting, an unfair stalling of aspirations. Is this what you’re thinking? Well,
reconsider. Try viewing patience as a form of compassion, a way to emotionally redeem your spirit in a world filled with frustration. Patience is a
lifelong spiritual practice as well as a way to find emotional freedom.

ART AND ENVIRONMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP The Art & Environment Committee will be decorating our church for
Fall Ordinary Time on Saturday, October 8 at 8 am. We will greatly
appreciate your lending a hand in making this transition happen!
LITURGY COMMITTEE The Sacred Heart Liturgy Committee meets 5 times during the year
from 5:30 to 6:30 pm in the parish conference room. This committee
is comprised of people who serve in leadership over various ministries
that participate in some way in our liturgical celebrations, as well as
our priests and deacons. We also seek membership from our parish
community. Our goal is to discuss what we see and hear, and discern
how things can run more smoothly before, during and after Masses
and other liturgical celebrations. We do not critique or in any way or
change what happens within the liturgical celebration (Word and
Eucharistic) itself. Rather, our goal is to make the celebrations more
accessible, welcoming, and inspiring to the people of faith.
Parishioner participation is for a two year term, at most. If you are
interested in serving as a parishioner representative on this
committee, please contact Sheila Hancock, Director of Music and
Worship at sheila.hancock@sacredheart wdm.org.

MARRIAGE SPONSOR COUPLES NEEDED Sacred Heart is in need of several sponsor couples to help prepare
engaged couples for the Sacrament of Marriage. This is such a
rewarding ministry and will strengthen your own marriage by learning
and growing together with the newly engaged couple. Time
commitment: most marriage preparation ministers are matched up
once a year with new couples for 4-5 meetings. This is based on your
own schedule and is very flexible. You will be fully trained by the
Diocese and then matched up with couples to begin their journey
together in marriage. Next training session is Sunday Oct. 2nd, 1-
5 pm at Sacred Heart. Please contact Pam in the church office to
register for the training. 515-225-6414.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP In Faithful Citizenship for Iowa Catholics, the Iowa bishops say “The
defense of human life and dignity must begin with the fundamental
right to life from natural conception to natural death. From there it
extends to fair access to productive work and fair wages, food and
shelter, education and health care, protection from harm and freedom
to emigrate.” Go to www.iowacatholicconference.org and click on
“Faithful Citizenzhip” for more information.
In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,
the US Catholic bishops remind Catholics, “We are called to bring
together our principles and our political choices, our values and our
votes, to help build a better world.” For information on how to
register to vote, go to sos.iowa.gov.

WALK THAT MORE MAY EAT The Des Moines Area Hunger Hike is the opening event of the World
Food Prize week. Taking place on the second Sunday each October,
the Hunger Hike serves as a visible witness to the concern about
hunger, both locally and globally. Hundreds of people of all ages, a
coalition of institutions, organizations, denominations, and faiths
gather to “walk that more may eat.”
Since 1969, Hikers have raised over 1 million dollars to help alleviate
the problem of hunger in our community and abroad. Donations are
distributed among nonprofit agencies and programs that provide
food to those in need. Over 96% of funds are allocated for food
purposes, with less than 4% covering the required insurance,
publicity and postage expenses.
To participate in the Hunger Hike on October 9, request a packet by
emailing [email protected] and begin collecting
donations. Online donations may be made at
desmoineshungerhike.org. Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/
desmoineshungerhike.
Looking for ways to volunteer? We have many ways to participate in
the Hunger Hike, such as serving as a guide along the route or
helping hand out food and drink at the end of the Hike. Please let us
know if you are available to help some way on Hike Day!
