A rich experience of landscape and wildlife and a real flavour of wilderness. Yet, though there is a sense of remoteness and grandeur in many places, remember it’s never far to a good restaurant or overnight accommodation!

Variety of LandscapeAs a drive through Glen Torridon will reveal, there are plenty of dramatic landscapes in the north, including the mountains of Inverpolly, north of Ullapool. Here, steep-sided peaks such as Stac Pollaidh and Suilven rear up from a ‘plinth’ of rocks which geologists believe to be some of the oldest on earth. This ancient Lewisian gneiss has been scoured and hollowed by long-vanished glaciers, though not specifically for the benefit of anglers who have an endless choice of lochs in Sutherland!

Caithness and its FlagstonesA characteristic product of the broad and open landscapes of Caithness is Caithness flagstone. These bedded sandstones have been worked for almost two centuries from quarries near Thurso, and used as paving, roofs and even as field boundaries. The story is told in the Caithness Flagstone Trail at Castletown.

Burghs and Fishing StationsIn contrast to the beautiful but comparatively unpopulated west, the eastern coast overlooking the rich waters of the Moray Firth has several communities. Cromarty is one such with some outstanding 18th-century architecture. The Courthouse portrays the development of the town. In contrast to old- established settlements like Dingwall, Tain and Dornoch, Ullapool in the west was established as a fishing station only in 1788.

Wildlife of the NorthWith so much wild country, there are many places to see Highland wildlife. These include pine marten and golden eagle on the Beinn Eighe nature reserve by Loch Maree, spectacular numbers of cliff-nesting seabirds on the island of Handa, which is managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, hen harrier and short eared owl on the

Caithness ‘flow country’ around Forsinard, or the Moray Firth bottlenose dolphins viewed from Chanonry Point by Fortrose.

Kingdom of the Northern PictsPortmahomack is a pretty coastal village by the Dornoch Firth. Archaeological investigation has unearthed evidence of Scotland’s only Pictish monastery. Beautiful pieces of Pictish sculpture are displayed in the Tarbat Discovery Centre.

Highland ClearancesThe empty glens of today once supported large populations. The changing economic climate of Scotland from the 18th century onwards resulted in both emigration and eviction - a story told at a number of ‘clearance villages’ - for example, at Badbea, north of Helmsdale, you can visit this abandoned crofting village, originally settled by Highland folk cleared from the neighbouring glens. Timespan in Helmsdale portrays the impact of the local clearance episodes. Further north, there are clearance sites to view in Strathnaver, while Strathnaver Museum in Bettyhill gives the full flavour.

Take the High RoadPerhaps one of the UK’s most exciting drives, the Bealach na Ba (Gaelic for the pass of the cattle) is the high road to Applecross, an attractive community on a peninsula facing Skye. The Bealach na Ba road climbs to 2054 ft (626m).

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

Attadale Gardens and Sculpture

Started by Baron Schroder in the late 19thcentury, hill paths meander through 20 acres of conifers and rhododendrons.

Totally transformed after the 1980 storms by ownerNicky Macpherson, it is now a painter’s garden, designed to frame the magnificent views of Skyeand the surrounding hills. Waterfalls, Monetbridges, meconopsis, bamboo and candelabraprimula are reflected in dark pools. Sculpturelurks in unexpected places.

The Orkney islands lie just an hour’s journey across the Pentland Firth from Gills Bay, near John O’Groats. With world-class archaeology, thriving local arts, crafts and music, and a rich diversity of wildlife, Orkney has a lot to offer the visitor.

Pentland Ferries’ sailings throughout the day mean that you can make your crossing to Orkney at a time that suits you, be that for a day trip or a longer stay.

Departing from Gills Bay, you will arrive in Orkney through Scapa Flow at the conservation village of St Margaret’s Hope. From here sites such as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, Skara brae and St. Magnus Cathedral are within easy reach across causeways known as the ‘Churchill Barriers’, built primarily as naval defences in the 1940s they now form part of the main road network to the Orkney Mainland.

Our purpose-built car and passenger ferry offers two comfortable lounges on the ship and an outside upper deck, which offers superb views. When you’ve taken in the sights, you can relax inside and enjoy hot and cold drinks and snacks from the on-board cafeteria. There is a wheelchair lift enabling disabled passengers to gain access from the car deck to the lounges.

The journey by car from Inverness to Gills Bay is around 2 ½ to 3 hours, depending on conditions. Please allow plenty of time for the journey and check in at least 30 minutes before departure.

The terminal at Gills Bay has a cafe serving a varied menu of hot and cold snacks and drinks as well as toilet facilities and information about places to visit during your stay in Orkney. Facilities for charging electric vehicles are provided at the ferry terminal.

By the tranquil shores of the Dornoch Firth, amidst the golden barley fields of Ross-shire, lies the Glenmorangie Distillery. Here you will find a warm Highland welcome from the legendary Men of Tain, the skilled craftsmen who ensure that Glenmorangie is made in the same unhurried and uncompromising way it has always been through its long and distinguished history.

THE TOURSWe offer a range of tours with unparalleled access to the Distillery and its warehouses. With the help of our expert guides you will experience all stages of the whisky making process from mashing and fermenting to distilling and maturation. Within our Still House (we call it our Highland Cathedral) stand the tallest stills in Scotland, their long copper necks are the same height as a fully grown giraffe! As a result only the lightest and purest vapours make it to the top, giving a smoother, more elegant whisky.

On your visit to our traditional earth floored warehouses we will explain why Glenmorangie has for many years led the industry in the pioneering use of only the finest casks in which to mature our whisky.

THE ORIGINAL TOURYou will be guided around the distillery, learning about our flagship whisky, Glenmorangie Original, which is matured exclusively in the finest first and second fill white oak ex-bourbon casks for a minimum of ten years creating a smoother, rounder whisky.

Throughout our Original Tour we will share with you the steps we take in the pursuit of perfection and in creating our whisky. And of course no tour would be complete without tasting a dram of this award winning whisky!

THE SIGNET TOURComplement your Distillery Tour with a visit to our Signet Room where you can sample Glenmorangie Original and Glenmorangie Signet which is one of our rarest expressions and undoubtedly the richest whisky in our range. A complex vatting of our oldest whisky stocks combined with whiskies matured in the world’s most expensive designer casks we bring alive Glenmorangie Signet’s rich dark layers of flavour with a very unusual and alluring sonic tasting experience.

THE HERITAGE TOURA very special experience which adds a pilgrimage to the Tarlogie Springs, Glenmorangie’s own water source and most prized asset to your Distillery Tour. On this tour you will also visit the extraordinary Hilton of Cadboll Stone. A hand carved recreation of one of Scotland’s most revered Pictish treasures that, with its intricate design, has become the inspirational symbol of our brand. You are then invited to join us at Glenmorangie House, our exclusive Highland home, where we will serve you lunch and the opportunity to taste Glenmorangie Original, followed by an expression from our Extra Matured Range, finishing off with the prestigious Glenmorangie 18 Year Old. At the end of this memorable tour you will leave with a special memento of your visit.

The Glenmorangie Company advocates responsible drinking. Please savour our whiskies in moderation.

The Glenmorangie Distillery Tain, Ross-shire IV19 1PZ, Scotland.

On the A9, 45 minutes from Inverness, 1 mile north of Tain.
