The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada recently announced that Westoba Credit Union has made a four-year pledge to the Build a Better World Campaign.

Westoba, a long-term supporter of CDF, has committed $40,000 to the campaign in addition to the proceeds from the annual golf tournament that it holds to raise money for CDF’s work. The tournament has raised more than $130,000 over the last 10 years.

Wayne McLeod, Westoba’s chief executive offi cer, has been a member of CDF’s board since 2001, and served as chair of the board for many of those years.

“The international development work that CDF supports through the Canadian Co-operative Association has been a passion of mine for a very long time, and I am proud of the way that the members and staff of Westoba have rallied to this cause as well,” McLeod said. “CDF has always been able to count on our support, but it is important for us to show leadership and make a formal, multi-year commitment to this important campaign.

At the same time, we commit to hosting our annual golf tournament for the next four years, which should bring in considerably more than the credit union’s donation.”

Funds raised through the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada are used to support the international development program of the Canadian Co-operative Association.

For more than 30 years, the two organizations have worked together to support thousands of co-operatives and credit unions around the world in their efforts to help people work their own way out of poverty.

The Build a Better World Campaign seeks to raise $12 million over the next four years in support of co-operative poverty reduction around the world.

The campaign was inspired by the theme of the International Year of Co-operatives—“Co-operative Enterprises Build a Better World.”

Westoba Credit Union held four information meetings and one annual meeting this year. The fi rst meeting was held in Glenboro for the Glenboro/Ninette/Belmont district, where James

Abernethy was re-elected for another term as board director. The second meeting was held in Carberry and as Al Sjolie had served his maximum of three terms, a new board director was elected and Edith Anderson will now serve the Carberry district. The third meeting was in Rivers and Alan Morken was elected as the board director, as Don Ramsey has served the maximum of three terms. The fourth information meeting was held in Killarney and a new board director was also elected, as Betty Turner had completed the maximum length of the service on the board. The new director voted in for the Killarney/Cartwright district was Stanley Reimer. The annual meeting took place in Brandon on April 25 and Elizabeth Roberts was voted in as a new board director for the Brandon/Shilo district to replace Scott Lamont, who had served the maximum term length of three terms.

Westoba would like to take this opportunity to thank Al Sjolie, Don Ramsey, Betty Turner and Scott Lamont for their years of service to the credit union. Their time and effort on behalf of the board and credit union is much appreciated. Westoba would also like to welcome the new members of the board and we look forward to another great year!
