NJ ASK 3-8MATHEMATICS
Short constructed-response questions require students to write their responses to math items in their answer documents. Students in grades 3 through 8 will not have the use of calculators for the duration of the short constructed-response parts of the mathematics section of the tests.Students in grades 3 and 4 will use the calculator for 25% of the test while students in grades 5 through 8 will use the calculator for 50% of the test.

Calculators will not be permitted during the SCR part of the NJ ASK 3-8.
In grades 3 and 4, calculators will be permitted on one of the remaining timed parts of the test. The remaining parts of the test consist of MC and ECR questions.
In grades 5 through 8, calculators will be permitted on three of the remaining timed parts of the test. The remaining parts of the test consist of MC and ECR questions.
All students are prohibited from using a calculator during the non-calculator active parts of the math test; however, students whose IEP/504 plan allows for its use may use a calculator and or approved manipulatives (i.e., abacus, counting chips, number line,) on the MC and ECR parts of the test if the accommodation is documented in said IEP/504 plan.

ALL LEP STUDENTS MUST TAKE THE NJ ASK. THE ONE EXCEPTION IS FOR NON-SPANISH SPEAKING STUDENTS WHO ENTERED THE UNITED STATES AS WELL AS A LANGUAGE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM [currently enrolled in the program] ON OR AFTER JULY 1, 2011. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
A MEDICAL EMERGENCY IS DEFINED AS THE OCCURRENCE OF A SEVERE MEDICAL OR PYSCHIATRIC CONDITION OR EPISODE WHICH REQUIRES MEDICAL ATTENTION OR SUPERVISION DURING WHICH TIME THE STUDENT IS NOT ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN STATE ASSESSMENTS.

Beginning with the 2012 administration of the NJ ASK, examiners MUST grid in their assigned SMID on each student’s test document for each day of testing. If the SMID on the test document differs from the one previously collected in the Pre-ID file, the one gridded on the test document will be used. Districts may also make any SMID corrections necessary on the Record Change Roster after testing has been completed.

Only examiners in the classroom administering the assessment are submitted in this field. Proctors should not be submitted.
If there is more than one examiner in the room, submit the person who is playing the most direct role in the administration.
If different sections are administered by different people, submit the most appropriate one to this field.

Districts do not need to submit a rescore request form. Any student whose raw score total falls within ONE raw score point of the PROFICIENT level will go through an automatic rescore process prior to reporting. Any rescore that results in a change in score will be reflected in the district's reports.
For the 2012 NJ ASK administration, DISTRICTS WILL ONLY RECEIVE PAPER COPIES OF THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENT REPORTS AND STUDENT STICKERS. All other reports will be posted on MI’s Web site.
ISR and Student Stickers will be delivered the week of September 7 – 13, 2012.
ALL SECTIONS ROSTERS will be posted online on August 2, 2012. All other reports will be available on September 10, 2012.

Students receiving homebound or bedside instruction MUST be tested.
Testing may occur anytime during the 2 week testing period.
Examiner MUST be:Licensed professional employed by the district.Trained by school or district test coordinator.Sign appropriate School Security Checklists. Maintain test security at ALL times. Return secure test materials to school coordinator ASAP each day after testing is completed. Please refer to the NJ ASK Test Coordinator Manual for detailed procedures.

All LEP students MUST be tested. There are NO exemptions. However, non-Spanish speaking students who entered the United States and a language assistance program on or after July 1, 2011 are not required to take the LAL section of the test but they MUST take Math and Science.
Former LEP students (F1 and F2) ARE NOT PERMITTED LEP accommodations.
You may provide one or more of the following accommodations to current LEP students:
1. Additional time up to 150% of the administration times indicated.
1. Translate directions only into the student’s native language. Translation of passages, items, prompts, and tasks is NOT permitted.
2. Use of a translation, bilingual dictionary, preferably one normally used by the student as part of the instructional program.
You must test any student receiving accommodations in a room separate from general education students.
LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENT STUDENTS

All students NOT taking the NJ ASK must be administered the Alternate Proficiency Assessment
[APA]. The APA is available in Language Arts Literacy, Mathematics, and Science.
If a student’s answer folder/test booklet is submitted to the contractor with responses, it will
be scored, regardless of whether or not the student is coded as taking the APA. Scores for these students will be included in all
school and district reports.• PLEASE NOTE: If a student’s record indicates that he or she is exempt from taking the NJ ASK in all subjects, the record should not indicate that he or she has accommodations.

• Examiners MUST transcribe the student’s responses into the regular-print answer folder/test booklet included in the kit.• Affix the Pre-ID Label or Student Linking Label to the front of the regular-print test booklet, for grades 3 and 4, and grid all information on the LP and/or Braille test booklet.• Examiners MUST complete an Irregularity Report (included in the kit) for each student who took a LP and/or Braille test.• STC MUST return the transcribed regular-print test booklet in the YELLOW special handling envelope with the used materials. Responsibilities of Sending Districts

o Public school receiving institutions and approved private school receiving institutions may conduct the administration of the assessment.

This coding is to be done for any student attending a school in their home district that is NOT their “neighborhood” school
(LEP and SE ONLY – THIS INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND IN THE ‘STATE OF NEW JERSERY CONSOLIDATED STATE APPLICATION ACCOUNTABILITY WORKBOOK’ – NOVEMBER 3, 2008; CRITICAL ELEMENT 5.2 AND 5.3).
All ANSWER FOLDER/TEST BOOKLETS MUST have the following information:
1. District and school code of the school where the student is taking the test under “Testing Site”.
2. District and school code of the neighborhood school under “School Use Only” section.

A separate Header Sheet is not required for each neighborhood school for which an ORP student is being tested. Single HEADER SHEETS per grade MUST have the following information:
1. District and school code of the school at which the child is sitting and taking the test (“Testing Site”).
Student results will be reported back to their “neighborhood school”.

If a student sprains or breaks an arm, wrist, etc., prior to testing, a district may prepare a temporary Section 504 Plan.
This Plan allows the student to receive testing accommodations as described in Appendix A of the Test Coordinator Manual.
Necessary testing accommodations, such as the use of a scribe, must be included in the Section 504 Plan.

Pre-ID Labels• Pre-ID labels must be affixed to the upper left corner of each student’s answer folder/test booklet. Place the label inside the box, covering the sample barcode.
• For grades 3 and 4, you may affix Pre-ID labels on the test booklet 24 hours before Day 1 of each test section.
• For grades 5 through 8, you may affix Pre-ID labels to the answer folder anytime prior to testing.
• Generic student linking labels will be provided to districts for use on the grade 3 and 4 test booklets. If using generic student linking labels, you must wait until after the conclusion of Day 1 testing for each test section to place the label on the test booklet(s).

PRE-ID LABEL DELIVERY• Pre-ID labels will be delivered with test materials for all students who
were properly submitted in the NJSMART Pre-ID submission window in the fall of 2011. Labels are printed with students in the order submitted by each school. Student records with unresolved errors were not submitted to MI by PCG. Labels were not and will not be produced for such students.
• For ODP/ORP students who are NOT APA, Pre-ID labels will be delivered to the TESTING SITE indicated on the student’s Pre-ID record.
• IF ODP/ORP students are designated as APA, their Pre-ID label will be delivered to the HOME/SENDING school and must be returned on a blank test document for reporting.
• Districts CANNOT order Pre-ID labels that were not originally submitted during the proper timeframe. No exceptions.

WHAT DO I DO ONCE MY BOXES ARRIVE?
1. Locate District Box One [white box] and find the district and school packing lists.
2. Check to be sure you have received all secure materials the packing lists indicate you have been sent [DO NOT OPEN ANY SHRINK-WRAP]:
a. For each packet of test booklets, check the security number on the first booklet, flip the shrink-wrapped package over and check the last number.
b. Count through the shrink-wrap to make sure there are 5 test booklets in each set of the shrink-wrap and 5 answer folders in the other set(s) of shrink-wrap.
c. Verify that the security numbers shown on the packing lists match what has actually been shipped.
3. Check that you have received a sufficient amount of all non-secure materials. If not, you may request additional materials using the Additional Materials Request Form (Appendix H, Test Coordinator Manual – also available on NJ ASK website).

4. Sign and return the District Receipt Form to MI in the envelope provided.
Notify the County Office and the Office State Assessments IMMEDIATELY of any shortages in the secure test materials. DO NOT REMOVE ANY SHRINK-WRAP.
Notify MI immediately of any test material shortages.
The District Receipt Form must be returned within 48 to 72 hours of receiving your materials.
