Who is who?
Master in Crystallography and Crystallization. . . the idea
Provides a unified, in-depth vision of the crystallinestate, their properties and applications for the variousscientific/technical disciplines that are deemed as “users”of Crystallography; including structural chemistry, material science, molecular biology, crystal growth, industrial crystallization, chemical engineering, nanotechnology, pharmacology, mineralogy and solidstate physics.
Master in Crystallography and Crystallization. . . the implementation
First Module. . . the funtamentals
Three months (October–December).Monday to Friday, 6 hours daily. Seville.Intensive teaching on:
I Fundamentals of Crystallization
I Fundamentals of Crystallography
I Diffraction theory and methods
I Solving and refining structures
Theoretical and practical teaching.
I Experiments and demonstrations inthe classroom

First Module. . . the funtamentals
The calendar of the first module is as follows:
After you finish the First Module
The last day of the T04 course, we will have a personal interviewwith every student. The aim of this interview is:
I to collect your impressions, criticism and suggestions onModule 1
I to fix your selection of optional courses in Modules 2 and 3.Please have your questions and pre-selection ready to be ableto decide by the end of the interview.
I to talk about your topics of interest regarding the MasterThesis. ¿Do you need advice? ¿Do you have already asubject/advisor?
I Any other business, including advice on your academicitinerary, research period. . .
Second Module. . . now to the lab
Two months scheduled between Januaryand April. Monday to Friday, 7.5 hoursdaily.
I Laboratory chosen by the studentamong 18 (+7) Options indifferent fields
I Chemical CrystallographyI Materials ScienceI Macromolecular CrystallographyI CrystallizationI Large FacilitiesI Computing
I Training by the laboratory staff
I Real problems (Master Thesis)
Second Module. . . now to the lab
Consider that:
I You must select 14 ECTS among these possibilities
I 14 ECTS (2 months) stages can be split in two 7 ECTS (1month) stages in different labs
I You can chose more than 14 ECTS. They will be recognizedin your diploma. UIMP will charge you these ECTS
I If this plan don’t fit your needs, please ask
Third Module. . . today specials
I Advanced Instrumentation. Large facilities. Splinebeamline, ESRF, Grenoble
I Weak Interactions in crystals. Univ. Alcala de Henares.I Crystallization in the Pharmaceutical, Agrochemical and
Food Industries. LEC, Granada. (Not held this year)
I Crystallography under extreme conditions. Univ. La Laguna
I Electronic Densities. ICMA, Zaragoza
I Polymorphism. Univ. Barcelona.
I Crystallization of Macromolecules and Biomineralisation. LEC,Granada.
I Crystallography of Macromolecules. IQFR, Madrid.
I X-Ray Powder Diffraction and the Rietveld Method. Castellon
I Computational Crystallography: Development ofCrystallographic Software. ILL, Grenoble
Third Module
Consider that:
I You must complete 6 ECTS (two courses) in this module.
I At least 2–3 registered students are necessary to run a course
I “Crystallization in the Pharmaceutical, Agrochemical andFood Industries” will not be taugh this year
I Some Courses might require some extra interaction with theorganizers:
I separate (free) registration,I local accomodationI safety protocolsI aplication for scholashipsI . . .
get contact with them 2–3 months before the course
I If this plan don’t fit your needs, please ask
Master Thesis. . . almost there!
I 12 ECTS awarded
I Research article draft (due firstweek of July, don’t start too late!)
I Oral presentation (in English) ofthe same results (examinig board+ public)
I Work done during modules 2 and 3
I If you have already a topic/advisor,you must communicate and getthem approved by the masterdirection
I If you don’t have it, contact us andcheck the mcc web page, sometopics are offered there.
UIMP PhD Program. . . going further
To access the PhD degree you must pass:
I An Education period (at least 60 ECTS in an Official MasterProgram).
I A Research Period (working in research activities within thePhD Program).
I This period must include the preparation of a PhD Thesis.
To access the Research Period you need either
I A degree from the official UIMP Master Program.
I A Master degree in other University of the European HigherEducation Area.
I An equivalent degree that proves the same eduation level thatthe official Spanish Master Degrees. This degree must giveacces to PhD studies in the issuing country.
Why should I get my PhD at the UIMP
I Unique PhD degrees (for instance “Doctor in Crystallographyand Crystallization”)
I Country-wide institutions (UIMP, CSIC) with a largeinternational projection
I Research period in the largest Spanish Research organization(CSIC)
I Acces to special programs (JAE grants. . . ) and facilities(library network, instrumentation services. . . )
I Easy access to Double PhD degrees through agreements withother institutions
I Easy access to “International PhD” degrees
I Easy daily paperwork (few PhD students yet)
