Dear Members. We are thinking about numbers. As we enter the eighth monthof the calendar year, we are entering the second month of theBNC - Phoenix fiscal year and the fourth month of our secondyear of our term of office.
We are looking forward to the 2013 -14 calendar year of activities. Watch for the soon-to-be-published StudyGuide, a listing of our study groups for your enrollment. Please mail in your choice selections promptly as studygroups fill up quickly. Even as we plan for the fall, we are in the third month of a most successful and busysummer. Numerous members (old and new) participated in our various groups of the summer. We were able tojoin many of these fun and imaginative activities and thank the chairs and facilitators for a job well done.
Membership has also been busy. We are proud to announce that at the time of writing, we have added 27 newmembers for this membership year. We know that this number will have grown by the time of printing. Wewelcome all our new members and welcome back our existing members. We hope you avail yourselves of themany study groups and upcoming programming.
Please save the dates September 28th for a BBQ and October 25th for an entertaining Opening Luncheon.
As we all attend events and support BNC-Phoenix, we continue to contribute to the Sustaining the MindCampaign at Brandeis University. We have been collecting books steadily through the summer. Our members have been
so supportive, and in creative ways, resulting in the donation of quite a few books. Next
week I will be picking up a box of books from Half Price Books. Right now, thanks to
everyone's wonderful efforts, we have more than 120 books!
It has been decided to donate all books collected to one school. We'd like to have a
good number of books to make a significant donation so please continue to bring in
books to study groups or meetings. Cash donations of $7 and under are also
appreciated - they will be used to buy new books. Thank you to everyone who has
helped with this worthy ongoing project!

Charitable Gift Annuity —— Immediate PaymentTo establish a charitable gift annuity, you make a gift to Brandeis and in exchange receive a fixed annual dollaramount for life. The principal remaining at your death will then benefit any Brandeis program that you choose.
While gift annuities can be funded at a younger age, this type of gift might be especially attractive if you areaged 70 or above, you want to support Brandeis, and you would like to secure an immediate stream of incomefor yourself or for yourself and your spouse. The amount of the payments is based on the age(s) of the incomebeneficiary(ies). The older one is, the higher the payout rate one receives. In addition to the stream of fixedpayments, the gift will also generate an immediate charitable income-tax deduction. If you are younger and youwish to begin receiving payments at a future date, a deferred-payment gift annuity might be a more suitable giftarrangement.
Gift Range: $10,000 and more
Example: Anne Bateman, aged 78, gives $25,000 in cash to Brandeis in exchange for a gift annuity. Shereceives an income-tax deduction of approximately $11,713, based on her age. She will begin receiving incomechecks of $1,600 each year for the rest of her life. When she passes away, the remaining principal will benefitBrandeis.
Pointer: The charitable gift annuity is especially rewarding if funded with appreciated long-term securitiesgenerating little or no income. If you transfer such securities to Brandeis in exchange for a charitable gift annuity, you will avoid a significant amount of capital-gain taxation and any remaining capital gain will be reported inprorated amounts over the life (or lives) of the beneficiary(ies).

Students and other members ofthe Brandeis community wereinvited to sample food from theera and learn about the scrolls, their political and social contextand the science of artifactsfrom the ancient world. For more information, [email protected] orcall 781-736-8577.The exhibition, created by theIsrael Antiquities Authority, willinclude fragments from 20 ofthe Dead Sea scrolls and morethan 500 artifacts. It opened onMay 19 and will continue untilOctober, 2013.
Fragments of hundreds ofscrolls have been discoveredsince 1947, mostly in caves inthe area of Qumran, near thenorthwest corner of the DeadSea. About 230 of the scrollsare manuscripts of biblicaltexts. The scrolls are of
tremendous historical significance, offering a sense ofhow the biblical text developed,of the transition from biblical to rabbinic Judaism, and ofaspects of the Jewishbackground of early Christianity.
The scroll fragments are shownten at a time and rotatedmidway through the exhibit. Inaddition to the scrolls andsmaller objects from the biblicalperiod, highlights include athree-ton stone fromJerusalem’s Western Wall, limestone capitals from the firsttemple period (1000 –– 586BCE) and ossuaries from theearly Roman period. Theexhibition, which has beenpresented at Discovery TimesSquare in New York, theFranklin Institute in Philadelphia, and the Cincinnati MuseumCenter, was created by theIsrael Antiquities Authority, fromthe collections of the IsraeliNational Treasures.
