The String FamilyMozart Symphony no 39 4th mvmt excerpt

ViolinThe highest sounding instrument of the string family. There are four strings tuned in 5ths and are called E, A, D, G (highest to lowest) Here is an excerpt from Paganini’s Caprice No.24 performed by Hilary Hahn.

ViolaThe viola is the middle voice of the string family. It also has four strings and are called A,D, G, C (highest to lowest)The Viola and Violin have the same strings (A, D, G,) but the viola is a bigger instrument, making a warmer sound than the violin. Here is an excerpt from the 1st movement of the Viola Sonata by Arthur Bliss, played by Emanuel Vardi.

CelloThe Cello is the next lowest sounding instrument after the viola. It has four strings that sound an octave lower than the viola. The cello strings are called A,D, G, C. The cello is also an instrument that you would sit down to play. Here is an excerpt from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite No.1 played by Mischa Maisky.

Double BassThe double bass is the largest, and lowest sounding instrument in the string family. The strings are G, D, A, E, from highest to lowest. Musician’s often use a stool, or stand while playing the double bass. Here is an excerpt from Camille Saint Saens Carnival of the Animals “L’Elephant” played by Roger McCann.
