C A P T A I N J A M E S A . L O V E L L , J R . , U S N ( R E T. )Jim Lovell, former NASA astronaut and retired U.S. Naval Aviator, was the Pilot of Gemini 7, Commander of Gemini 12, Command Module Pilot of Apollo 8, and perhaps best known as the Commander of Apollo 13, which suffered a critical failure en route to the Moon but was brought back safely to Earth by the efforts of the crew and mission control.Capt. Lovell is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon and the first of only three people to fly to the Moon twice, including Apollo 8, the first Apollo mission to enter lunar orbit. Lovell was also the first person to fly in space four times.Capt. Lovell was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended the University of Wisconsin and later graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1952. After completion of flight training, Lovell was designated a Naval Aviator and later was selected for the Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Maryland, graduating at the top of his class. After graduation, he became a test pilot at “Pax River” and was designated as Project Manager for the Navy’s new F4H “Phantom” fighter, and later trained Navy and Marine Corps squadrons in the new aircraft. During his career Lovell accumulated over 7,000 flight hours including 3,500 in jet aircraft, 715 in space and accomplished 107 carrier landings. Lovell is a Fellow in the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and a member of the prestigious Golden Eagles.Awards: The Congressional Space Medal of Honor; the Presidential Medal of Freedom; the Navy Distinguished Service Medal; the Distinguished Flying Cross (2); the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal; and the French Legion of Honor.

F R E D W. H A I S EFred Haise, former NASA astronaut and military aviator, was on the backup crews for the Apollo 8, 11, and 16 missions, and flew as the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 13. In 1977, he was one of two aircraft commanders for the critical Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Test program. Mr. Haise was born in Biloxi, Mississippi and graduated with honors in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science from Western Michigan University and also graduated from the Harvard Business School Program for Management Development. Mr. Haise completed U.S. Navy flight training and served as a US Marine Corps fighter pilot in the VMF-533 and VMF-114 squadrons. While later flying with the Oklahoma Air National Guard, Mr. Haise was called to active duty in the Air Force with the 164th Tactical Fighter Squadron. He was the Outstanding Graduate of the Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School Class 64-A and was selected as a NASA Astronaut in April 1966. He has logged over 9,300 hours of flying time, including 6,200 in jet aircraft.He is a Fellow of both the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Gamma Tau, and Phi Theta Kappa honor societies.Awards: The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Haley Astronautics Award; the General Thomas D. White Space Trophy; the Society of Experimental Test Pilots Kinchloe “Test Pilot of the Year” Award; the NASA Distinguished Service Medal; the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and membership in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.

T H E A W A R D The George E. Haddaway Award is presented by the Frontiers of Flight Museum each year to those who have distinguished themselves by their accomplishments in the realm of flight as pilots, aircrew members, corporate or political leadership, engineering, education, or literature.

G E O R G E E . H A D D A W AYGeorge E. Haddaway was a prominent fixture in the north Texas aviation scene for decades as a pilot and aviation journalist.For forty years, beginning in 1934, he was publisher of the area’s most successful aviation magazine, Southwest Aviation, which underwent several name changes to reflect his observations as the area’s aviation industry matured. His years of publishing brought Mr. Haddaway into contact with aeronautical legends such as “Jimmy” Doolittle, Charles Lindbergh and Wiley Post, among others, and Haddaway accumulated a wealth of aviation-related memorabilia and archives.With this vast treasure trove of books, photographs, and papers, he was the driving force behind the formation of the History of Aviation Collection. The collection is now housed at the McDermott Library of the University of Texas at Dallas.The many significant three-dimensional artifacts he acquired formed the basis for the founding of the Frontiers of Flight Museum to house and display these priceless aeronautical artifacts.

Cooper and wife Millie Cooper have shaped the way Americans view fitness for nearly 50 years. Dr. Cooper, preventive medicine pioneer, introduced the concept of exercising in pursuit of good health when he launched the world-wide phenomenon Aerobics in 1968 — his first of 19 books on health and fitness. His latest book, Start Strong, Finish Strong, is a collaboration with his son, Tyler Cooper, MD, MPH, President and CEO of Cooper Aerobics. A former Air Force flight surgeon, Dr. Cooper developed the 12-minute and 1.5 mile fitness tests and Aerobics Point System.As founder and chairman of the renowned Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, the home of six health and wellness companies and The Cooper Institute 501(c)3, Dr. Cooper has proven that it’s easier to maintain good health than regain it once it’s lost. His current focus is working to help reverse the childhood obesity epidemic through school-based physical fitness and nutrition programs and assessments. Dr. Cooper received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Degrees from the University of Oklahoma. He also holds a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Cooper is board certified in preventive medicine.Millie, alongside her husband, has set an example for all women and their families in leading healthier lifestyles. She has authored several books focused on women’s health — the first, Aerobics for Women, was co-authored with her husband in 1972. A longtime and dedicated supporter of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign, Millie has served for decades in multiple capacities on its Women’s Guild. Millie also devotes time to serving with the Salvation Army, as well as her church. She holds an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Dallas Baptist University and has received multiple awards including the prestigious Healthy American Fitness Leaders Award in 1993.Dr. and Mrs. Cooper have one daughter, Berkley (married to TJ), and one son Tyler (married to Angie), and five grandchildren.

S O F I A , A N A S T R O N A U T I N T H E M A K I N G “Who would you most like to meet and talk to?”

That was the essay question on the 2017 STAAR test. Nine-year-old Sofia’s answer was “Jim Lovell.”

Sofia wants to be an astronaut when she grows up.

She’s recently read Apollo 13 and the highlight of her year was a visit to NASA in Houston for Spring Break.

When her father told her that two of her heroes, Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, were the headliners of the Museum’s 2017 Gala, Sofia came up with a game plan: she opened a lemonade stand in her neighborhood and worked until she had earned enough money for her ticket.

This passionate young lady is a wonderful example of the type of students who learn and grow through the Museum’s STEM educational programming that prepares our future generation for their career paths.

Eisele, and Walter Cunningham.During the 11 days and 163 orbits, the crew tested all the systems of the redesigned Apollo Command Module.The mission was declared “101% successful” and paved the way for America’s Moon landing less than a year later.
