SEMINARIAN, JOHN BAUMGARDNER John Baumgardner is a s e m i n a r i a n f o r t h e Archdiocese of Milwaukee. We are very fortunate that his parish assignment for the summer is again at St. Francis de Sales! John will be orda ined to the transitional diaconate in Sept., and then to the priesthood in July of 2017. Each summer, the seminary faculty asks the seminarians to be responsible for a “special project” in the parish they are assigned. This year John's “project” is volunteering to be the seminarian chaplain for our Catholic Central High School Football Team. John’s faith and sports are both important to him. He attended Pius XI High School, playing varsity football (quarterback), baseball, and ran track & field. Prior to attending seminary, John attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and was a member of the football team for two years. He also has been involved with the parish youth group at St. Francis de Sales, having recently attended both Stuebenville and the mission trip to Harlan, Kentucky with our teens. John also is currently a member of the chaplaincy team for the University of Dallas, and served on summer staff at Catholic Youth Expeditions, a Catholic youth camp for teens/young adults in the Green Bay diocese. Thank you John for being such a wonderful example and leader for our middle school and high school kids! Save the date for the BYE BYE BURGER BASH at SFDS on Aug. 21. We’re having a farewell indoor picnic for John before he heads back to Rome.

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The Solemni ty of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on Aug. 15. Because it falls on a Monday this year, the obligation is lifted. The Holy Day will be celebrated at Mass here at St. Francis de Sales on Monday, Aug. 15, at 7 a.m. (English), 9 a.m. (English) and 7 p.m. (Bilingual). Please join us!

RCIA CLASSES BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER RCIA classes for this coming year will begin in September. Classes will meet on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. These classes are an opportunity to learn about the Catholic Church if you have never been Catholic, to renew your knowledge of the faith if you “left for awhile” or to prepare yourself for the sacrament of Confirmation if you are an adult who has not been confirmed. For more information call our RCIAteam: Lisa Parker at (262) 325-4227 or Geri Braun at (262) 249-9590.

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES BIBLE STUDY School is back in session and it is also time for the Fall Bible Study class to begin. Our study this session will be the Gospel of St John and the Johannine Letters. The Gospel of St. John follows Jesus through his public ministry of “signs” that lead to His passion, death, resurrection and ultimate ascent to the glory of His heavenly Father. This will be a 15 week session that will start on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and will end on Dec. 14. We meet at 10 a.m. each Wednesday in the Parish Hall. Cost for the session is $15.00. If you are interested in joining us or learning more about our group, please contact P a t C r a m e r a t (262) 327-4303 or [email protected]. We always welcome new members. You do not have to be a Bible expert, we all are learners and enjoy learning about the Bible together. Hope you can join us!

YEAR OF MERCY: AUGUST 2016 Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy to begin on Dec. 8, 2015 and continue through Nov. 20, 2016. Catholics throughout the archdiocese are invited to practice the Works of Mercy throughout the jubilee year. For August, we focus on the Work of Mercy: “Counsel the Doubtful.” Take this Mercy Action: Reflect on who around you is in doubt or despair and share your experience of God's presence and power in your life. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 15, is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is normally a holy day of obligation, although when it falls on a Monday, the obligation is lifted. It is a day on which we celebrate with the whole Church what our loving God did for Mary, the Mother of his only begotten Son. God willed that the Mother of Christ should not undergo the corruption of death, but that she be assumed into the glory of heaven. This solemnity is both an opportunity to honor Mary, the Mother of our Savior, and a time to reflect on what God will do for all those who accept his will as Mary did. Mary is the Model of the Church. She is the one who shows us how to live the Christian life. She answered “yes” to God’s call, and proclaimed herself the handmaid of the Lord. True discipleship entails faithful acceptance of God’s will, and a willingness to serve God always. Mary’s Assumption gives us a glimpse of what God has in store for those who love and serve him – eternal happiness in his loving presence. There will be three opportunities to attend Mass tomorrow at our parish on Monday, Aug. 15 on the Solemnity of the Assumption: 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 7:00 p.m. God’s Blessings, Fr.

DEAR FRIENDS... This past week, I had the privilege of accompanying a group of pilgrims from the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist as we visited all 10 Holy Doors in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. On behalf of our group, let me say thank you for your welcome hospitality. As we visited the Holy Door of your church, we offered prayers for those in your parish and everyone in the Archdiocese. In addition, we offered urgent prayers for peace in our homes, cities and the entire world. I hope that you might be inspired as we conclude this Jubilee Year of Mercy, to visit your Cathedral - as individuals, families or a parish group. We would love to welcome your to the Mother Chirch of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for a chance to pray and learn more about the history of the Archdiocese and your Cathedral. Tours are easily arranged or visit on a Sunday for Mass. It would be a privilege to welcome you! Please visit our website at www.stjohncathedral.org or send me an email [email protected]. Thank you again on behalf of our pilgrim group! Sincerely, Very Rev. Jeffery R. Haines Rector and Pastor
