As a Special Agent of the DEA it is important for you to understand the role that each person plays in solving a case.

    Diversion

A Diversion Investigator monitors and tracks pharmaceuticals and their components to

make sure they are not diverted to

    the market.

Activity 1: You come across a suspicious shipment record. An unusually large amount of Ephedrine (a stimulant found in Methamphetamine) is being shipped across the world.

You will complete the first activities as a DEA Diversion Investigator.

Find the French Connection information in the exhibit and circle the 3 countries mentioned in the information.

The suspect involved with this case is moving the Ephedrine through the same route as the French Connection.

Activity 2: During your investigation you come across a coded letter written by the suspect involved with the case. The suspect is moving the Ephedrine to its final location. You must decode the letter to discover where the Ephedrine is being smuggled.

    Jon

Dear Sirs: The items I saw yesterday will be perfect! I’ll leave my card in Mar-seilles and come back in the af-ternoon. The Red Hotel Rocks! My suitcase has many stickers. Meet the next taxi at 5:00 since the airport shuttle van needs new tires. Hope New York is cool! In August I’ll visit my third vacation spot.

To decode the message, write down every 4th word.

  • Which suspect should you eliminate? ______________ Why did you eliminate him/her? _________________

Great job decoding the letter! You found out that the Ephedrine is being sent to New York. You will complete the next activities as a DEA Special Agent.

Activity 3: You find out that the Ephedrine is being delivered to a remote trailer park in Smallstown, NY. As an agent you must go undercover to do surveillance.

Study the clothes of the suspects. Which suspect can you eliminate based on their shoes?

    Special Agent

Find these items that DEA agents wore during undercover investigations.

A Special Agent does investigations, gathers evidence, and makes arrests to bring about the conviction of drug traffickers and money launderers.

The trailer park is very muddy this time of year and it is hard to walk without proper shoes.

A Forensic Chemist works in the lab and field to collect and analyze drugs and other chemicals to determine type, composition, and source.

Activity 5: You examine the scene and find a bottle of small, round pills. Use the “DEA Jobs” touchscreen kiosk to determine what drugs these are. Tap the “Forensic Chemist” option and follow the directions until you match these pills with their name.

You did a great job as an undercover agent! Because of your observations, the trailer is now classed as a crime scene. Next, you must examine the crime scene as a Forensic Chemist.
