DANII FOUNDATION UPDATE #DANIISGIFT

In 2019 our DANII Foundation theme is “This is ME”. We encourage all that have a connection with Type 1 across Australia to tell you’re stories! It’s the real story-telling that is the key to changing hearts and minds. DANII believes we can bring our voices into rooms when doors are closed and we will continue to create opportunities where there are barriers. We see opportunities for a better, safer world for all who live with Type 1 diabetics. Our team and our volunteers continue to engage in creating change, and we will continue to smooth the road for a change the way Type 1 diabetics live their lives. DANII remains focussed on giving Type 1 diabetics the lives they deserve.

So, what’s been happening at the DANII Foundation…. Thousands of families rejoiced in April 2017 when Stage One of our dream was realised with Government funding every Australian Child living with Type 1 diabetes into life-saving and life-changing Continuous Glucose Monitor technology.

Since our 2018 Jelly Bean Ball, this past year has been another milestone of great achievements for our Australian Type 1 Community. In September DANII convened our 5th Annual Jelly Bean Educational Cruise to the South Pacific, bringing together 180 new Type 1 diabetes friends and families. DANII proudly funded 26 Educational Scholarships and all our delegates came home with a wider support network, much needed respite and armed with a greater knowledge and understanding of how to intensively manage their challenging Type 1 diabetes.

In October, we rounded up DANII’s Army and headed for Canberra. Together we pounded the doors of over 50 politicians articulating why CGM Life-saving and Life-changing technology should be made affordable for all Australians “no matter their age”. We were grateful to the many politicians who were receptive to our plea. Following our whirlwind visit to Parliament House, we were delighted with the results, when just five weeks later, on Sunday 25 November, Stage Two of our dream was released when the Minister for Health, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP announced further funding of $100 million over four years to help more Australians over the age of 21 living with type 1 diabetes access glucose monitoring technology. A stage closer to #CGM4ALL!

Late October DANII held its Annual Golf Day at St Michaels in Sydney, with over 120 supporters and a successful fundraising day for our great cause enjoyed by all.

November 14th DANII held our World Diabetes Day Event at Medtronic Head-office at Macquarie Park, hosting 200 Type 1 diabetes friends and supporters from across Australia who came together in celebration, support and advocacy.

Our Travelling DANII Bears have been on many a great adventure both within Australia and across the globe, comforting both children and adults, creating great conversation starters which ultimately continues to lead us collectively to a wider public understanding of Type 1 diabetes. #Type1diabetesVoice

In twelve months, our funds raised have provided 68 Australian’s life-saving and life-changing Technology Scholarships including Continuous Glucose Monitors and

Insulin Pumps with DANII investing over $353,500 towards this project. #DANIIsGift

Since conception of the DANII Foundation, whilst we are proud of our many milestones achieved, we still have 93,000 Australian’s who are still not funded into CGM Technology and thousands reaching out desperate for respite and education. #JoinDANIIsArmy

CGM is conducted by the wearing of a sensor that checks the blood sugar level every few minutes, 24 hours a day. It allows for trend identification, prevention of high and low blood sugar events, and is the best way to prevent hospitalisation for common illnesses, as it allows for better management and control at home.

Better day to day management is the best prevention for long term complications. It also allows Type 1 diabetics (and their families) to sleep at night, knowing they will be alerted by their CGM if their blood sugar is dangerously low, a critical factor in saving lives.

In addition to the financial and health implications, a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes also has a profound emotional impact on the entire family. Parents of children and carers of adults with Type 1 diabetes face grief, fear and desperation in coming to terms with the diagnosis of a chronic medical condition that has the real possibility of shortening one’s lifespan by decades.

We have proven that CGM technology provides Type 1 diabetics and their family’s peace of mind. The ability to know at a glance of the CGM receiver that you or your loved one is not going dangerously low or high and that they will wake up in the morning has obvious benefits that are not quantifiable. It is essential that government fast-track the adoption of CGM technology for all; first to improve the lives of all that live with Type 1 diabetes and secondly to reduce precious health funding and divert it to those in need.

Our vision continues in supporting more people living with this challenging life-long disease. Type 1 diabetes is a disease that requires 24/7 intensive and invasive management. It’s a disease that is not caused by poor diet or life-style and sadly Type 1 diabetes has No Cure in sight.

Moving forward, the DANII Foundation will continue to strongly work towards our mission of “Making affordable, life-saving alert technology a reality for ALL people living with Type 1 diabetes, to educate, to advocate and to provide respite for the Type 1 community.”

DIABETES IS INCREASING

• Diabetes is the epidemic of the 21st century and the biggest challenge confronting Australia’s health system.

• 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. That’s one person every five minutes.

• Around 1.7 million Australians aged 2 years and over have diabetes. This includes all types of diagnosed diabetes (1.2 million known and registered – 5.1% of the population) as well as silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes (up to 500,000 estimated) (Source 1).

• Estimated 140,000 are already living with life-long Type 1 diabetes for which there is NO CURE.

• More than 100,000 Australians have developed diabetes in the past year.

• For every person diagnosed with diabetes there is usually a family member or carer who also ‘lives with diabetes’ every day in a support role. This means that an estimated 2.4 million Australians are affected by diabetes every day.

• Total annual cost impact of diabetes in Australia estimated at $14.6 billion (Source 2).

• The global statistics for diabetes are staggering. One in Eleven people have diabetes, 415 million people.

• Every 6 seconds someone dies from Diabetes.

• Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia; increasing at a faster rate than other chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. All types of diabetes are increasing in prevalence:

• Type 1 diabetes accounts for 10% of all diabetes and is increasing

• Type 2 diabetes accounts for 85% of all diabetes and is increasing

• Gestational diabetes in pregnancy is increasing

Taresa Cooper DANII Foundation Administrative CoordinatorTaresa joined the DANII Foundation in April 2019 as the Administration Coordinator. Coming from a small country town in South Australia, Taresa strives to bring her country energy, encouragement and enthusiasm with her to Sydney. Previously, Taresa has studied in

the Field of Arts and Criminology where she aspires to become a police officer one day. She is currently on a break from her studies to focus on her love for being a part of a community and encouraging others to get involved with events and special causes. Taresa has a zest for entertainment and events, with regional experience serving as a Committee member for over 4 years in Theatre. Taresa brings a wealth of administration and customer service experience to the DANII Foundation team. She is eager make a difference, has a creative mind and focussed on DANII gaining a wider audience, by encouraging the public to learn more about Type 1 Diabetes.

Peter Fogarty DirectorPeter was born in 1979 in Sydney. Bachelor of Laws from University of Technology Sydney, Master of Applied Finance from Kaplan and currently completing a Master of Laws at The University of Sydney. Peter is an in-house lawyer at Macquarie Group advising the wholesale fixed income and currencies business, and has over 17 years’ experience working in legal and compliance roles in the financial services industry. Peter has type 1 diabetes. He was diagnosed as a 12 year old and in his early 20’s had hypoglycaemia in his sleep “resulting in coma, he” was fortunate to be found by a family member and received life-saving medical attention. Peter is passionate about sharing his personal experience of living a full life with type 1 diabetes. Peter joined as a Director of DANII Meads-Barlow Foundation Ltd in 2018.

Patrick Cameron DANII Foundation Fundraising DirectorPrior to joining 360HR Patrick was a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and an award winning professional fundraiser gaining a wealth of experience, expertise and in depth knowledge of the not-for-profit (NFP) sector including the challenges of recruiting staff. 15 years

of experience was gained in senior fundraising positions for organisations that included Care Flight, Make-A-Wish Australia, Wheelchair Sports NSW and CEO at FSHD Global Research Foundation. As a CEO Patrick developed and implemented strategic plans that relied on the recruitment of quality staff. Having left full-time work in NFP industry, Patrick is well positioned with a strong network and understanding of the industry to focus and recruit talent for executive management and leadership roles, fundraising, business development, project management, marketing & communications. Patrick also works consulting to NFP’s and has been working with the DANII Foundation since 2016.

General management, marketing and sales professional with an outstanding track record of accomplishment in multi-national and small business environments (including in a highly regulated industry), and as a member of boards and several committees. Proven ability to increase revenue and profitability, expand product portfolios and capture local, regional and global market share in highly competitive industries. Corporate governance skills have been honed through experience as a board member. Key strengths include P&L management, strategic planning, identifying and securing new business opportunities, leadership, and organisational re-structuring. Nominated for Telstra Small Business Woman of the Year in 2012 and AusMumpreneur of the Year in 2012. Michelle joined as a Director of the DANII Meads-Barlow Foundation Ltd in 2018.

Ashleigh Daus DANII Foundation ManagerAshleigh joined DANII Foundation in August 2018 as the Foundation Administration & Events Manager. Ashleigh has completed a Bachelor Degree in Business specialising in Event Management and her Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical

Operations). She brings with her a wealth of experience in Event Management and Business Administration. Ashleigh aspires to giving back to the community by providing family friendly, interactive and exciting educational events and activities which bring together community groups, families, friends and individuals to enjoy all that DANII has to offer. Ashleigh has a number of personal Interests including her involvement with various sports and music endeavours. She is highly skilled in various computer programs and has a strong ability to adapt. Ashleigh’s has a strong ability to organise, consolidate and distribute information to numerous parties effectively and efficiently, and she often volunteers her services for not-for-profit events and activities. Ashleigh is excited about her role with the DANII Foundation, supporting Australian’s living with Diabetes.

David Harrison DirectorDavid Harrison is a director of EFS Strategic, Elite Financial Solutions Group and Refresh Finance. He is a public practice accountant and financial advisor with over 25 years’ experience working with small to medium enterprises. He is passionate about helping build sustainable businesses and families achieve financial freedom. David has worked with a large number of businesses across many industries and has been instrumental in developing and implementing systems and processes to improve profitability and sustainability. He has mentored many employees in this time and finds great motivation in coaching others to perform above and beyond expectations. With a willingness to adapt to change David has championed technology and has involvement in a number of online start-up businesses. David previously held a senior board position for over 10 years at Ballet Australasia Limited and in this time helped build and develop strong foundations for the organisation. As an accountant and advisor he continues to assist and guide many not for profit organisations and charities still. David is Director of DANII Meads Barlow Foundation Ltd joining the board in 2012.

Donna Meads-Barlow Co-Founder & Acting Volunteer CEODonna Meads-Barlow was born in 1961 in Sydney, NSW. She is co-founder and Volunteer CEO of the DANII Foundation and Managing Director of the Donna Barlow Travel Group (DBT). Donna has more than thirty-five (35) years Travel Consulting experience, the last 30 at DBT since she founded the company. Donna is Managing Director of DBT and oversees the high-level management of her companies. Donna has a sincere passion for her company, her team, her customers and the travel industry as a whole. Donna is arguably a “pioneer engineer” in the Travel industry and is often called upon by her peers for mentoring. In 2012 following the death of her daughter Daniella from diabetes complications known today as “dead in bed” syndrome, Donna co-founded the DANII Meads-Barlow Foundation with husband, Brian. Today Donna drives and directs the DANII Foundation supporting Australian’s who live with type ONE diabetes. Donna sat on the Corporate Travel Board for Helloworld from 2009 till 2014 and is a representative on a number of steering committees for the Travel Industry. Donna and her DBT company have won many prestigious awards over the years including 2018 Best Travel Management Company Nationally, 2018 International Women’s Day Winner, Telstra Business Women’s finalist and nomination for Australian of the Year just to name a few.

Brian Meads-Barlow Co-Founder & DirectorBrian Meads-Barlow was born in London UK in 1957 and immigrated to Australia with his family in 1968 where he grew up and schooled to later become Director of the Donna Barlow Travel Group (DBT) in 1994 and the ensuing DANII Meads-Barlow Foundation in 2012. Brian’s tertiary studies include Business, Scheduling/Timetabling; Marketing and Information Technology. His current employment relies heavily on these qualifications as well as his ability to demonstrate efficient publicising across Social Media platforms. Brian is father to five children, including Daniella; his daughter sadly lost due to complications surrounding her Type 1 Diabetes in 2011. He is an integral but often quiet member of the DANII Meads-Barlow Foundation Board of Directors.

Robert Bryan Cameron ChairRobert Cameron is born in 1957 in Sydney, NSW. Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from University of Sydney 1980. Robert owns Cameron Legal, a successful and busy legal practice in Epping, NSW. Robert has 35 years’ experience as a solicitor. His practice covers a wide range of legal services. Supported by his staff, Cameron Legal has a strong reputation for the provision of competent and ethical legal advice. Robert has been heavily involved in serving the community in roles including Chairman of Epping Chamber of Commerce, Legatee and Chairman of the Shack Youth Outreach Inc Robert is a director of DANII Meads Barlow Foundation Ltd since its inception in 2012 and is committed to ensuring the ideals of the Foundation are attained.

WHY I TALK ABOUT TYPE 1 DIABETESOUR MISSION

TYPE 1 DIABETES IS A LARGE PART OF MY LIFE…

I do NOT talk about my Type 1 Diabetes to play victim or to attempt to get sympathy. I talk about it because it is a large part of my life.

I talk about it because it’s always a part of my thought processes. If I’m going out, I need to make sure I have everything I need - enough insulin in my insulin pump, my glucometer, my “hypo food”, see how much more time I have left on my CGM, and if I’m going to be “out” long enough, everything needed for a CGM sensor change, more insulin, a couple of infusion sets, an insulin reservoir...

I talk about it to raise attention to the issues that people with Type 1 Diabetes can face - because so many of us “hide” our Diabetes from everyone.

I talk about it to raise awareness of the differences between Type 1 Diabetes, and Type 2 Diabetes, which is the form more people are familiar with. It is literally impossible for Type 1 Diabetes to be managed without injecting insulin for the rest of the person’s life, while some people with Type 2 may not need to do so.

I talk about it so that others who also have it can feel less alone, and so that those who don’t have it get a tiny glimpse into what it’s like to live with day-to-day.

I talk about it because it needs active monitoring and management. No two days are ever the same, and how much insulin is the right amount one day could be far too little another day, or so much it could kill me on a different day. Those of us who live with it NEVER get a break from it. Does that sound exhausting? Believe me, it can be.

I talk about it because many people don’t know what CGM is, what insulin is, what Diabetes is, or what a big deal it all is. I know, I was once completely ignorant about it myself.

Let me put it this way, what do YOU think when you’re about to eat something? Do you think about how it might taste, and if you should eat it - if it’s fattening or not, and that might be about it. For a Type 1 Diabetic, we have to estimate the carbohydrates it may have in it, estimate how fast or slow those carbohydrates may be released into our blood, which also depends on how much fat there may be in it and other factors, how much protein is in it, how long since you last ate, how much active insulin you have in order to try to prevent “insulin stacking”, and how long after giving the bolus will you be able to actually eat it, so that your insulin has time to be circulating before the energy content of the food is released into your blood. That’s EVERY time you eat or drink almost anything, asides from say water.

I don’t talk about it for sympathy. I talk about it to raise awareness and help understanding.

What is Type 1 DiabetesDIABETES THE FACTS: Type 1 diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease in Australian children. There are over 130,000 Australians with type 1 diabetes and with five new cases every day Australia has one of the highest rates in the world. The number of Australian children being diagnosed with this disease is increasing by almost 5% every year. Typically striking young people, type 1 diabetes destroys the ability to produce insulin, which is vital for life. It requires an essential daily regime of multiple injections or continuous infusion of insulin through a pump, as well as up to 12 finger-prick blood tests. Type 1 diabetes is associated with a significantly increased risk of serious health complications. An autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by a complex mixture of genetic and environmental factors but not by an unhealthy diet or obesity. The number of Australians diagnosed with diabetes is expected to grow to 3.5 million by 2033.


BEAR ROLL CALLYOUR STORY IS OUR STORY

TRAVELLING DANII BEARSOur Bears have gone from being a lonely little bear keeping our office team company, to 4 Wheel Driving expeditions; Christmas light looking; they’ve even flown in the cockpit and Cruised Hawaii! They’ve been on many a business conference, been the Type 1 diabetes voice at school carnivals and even visited Tasmania and hiked Cradle Mountain. Our Bears create great conversations and have brought together Type 1 diabetes with the specific goal to create friendships, comfort and help spread awareness about “What is Type 1 diabetes”!

Whilst our DANII Friends ‘bear-sit’ they document their day-to-day lives with their inner thoughts, their adventures and their Type 1 Diabetics daily wins! This project is fast gathering a rich collection of personal stories and importantly forging greater links between our supporters forming new friendships, respite and education.

Travelling DANII Bears symbolise the very mantra DANII lives by, impacting on the here and now, for all affected by Type 1 diabetes. Our DANII friend’s photos and their diary entries articulate how our organisation pays it forward in delivering our vision and mission. These interactions are so simple yet very powerful in demonstrating the need for us to continue our support of ALL people who live with type 1 diabetes, today and every day.

Rod KaferDANII Celebrity Emcee Rod is a Former rugby union player for the ACT Brumbies and the Australian Wallabies. Rod now works for Fox Sports as a rugby commentator. At the age of 15 Rod was diagnosed with type ONE diabetes and told by the medical profession that he should not play rugby because it’s too dangerous. Rod refused to allow diabetes to rob him of his ambition to play rugby for Australia and used it as motivation. Today Rod is considered a true Hero in the Sporting world and gives up much of his time to support young people with type ONE and he is also a great inspirational speaker.

Penny Edney – Keynote SpeakerPenny is mother of 4 children, two who have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, and one who also went to school with Daniella at Barker College. Penny is the Operations Manager for Rodney Stevens Acoustics, a full time working mum who shares her personal story highlighting how Technology has contributed to their quality of family life. Penny, along with Rodney Stevens the Managing Director of Rodney Stevens Acoustics P/l, Desmond Raymond and her son Nicholas have also been intensively training under the guidance of a personal trainer Josh Bowen for these last 18 months. Together the 5 of them have formed a Team and will trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania over 7 days in July with the hope of achieving personal goals as well as raising funds and bringing the awareness of Diabetes Type 1 to the forefront of peoples minds.

Justin challenged his skills on Channel 7’s hit show, Dancing with the Stars raising in excess of $40,000 for the deserving charity, Diabetes Australia. He starred in his own primetime series “The Phone” then put his sporting prowess on show in Canada as a Foxtel presenter for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. He was also runner-up in Channel 7 hit series Australian Celebrity Survivor. Justin is a passionate humanitarian. Justin holds Ambassadorship with Diabetes Australia and is a proud Ambassador for the Special Olympics of Northern California raising thousands of dollars to sponsor athletes with Down Syndrome. In Australia, Justin has supported the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Leukemia Foundation and Make a Wish Foundation & also is a 12 year Bandage Bear Westmead Hospital Ambassador, Australia Day Ambassador and became our

Celebrity DANII Foundation Ambassador in 2014. He holds a 25 year Active reserve Voluntary life Guard service with North Bondi Surf Club. He was also honored as a proud Olympic Torch bearer for 2000 Australian Olympic Games; a 2nd degree Black belt in Martial Arts Karate where he taught a school at North Bondi Surf Club for 14 years & competed at national level. In April 2017, he finished filming a lead role in an Australian movie which he was more than happy to re-establish himself back on home soil. This comedy drama flick, which is fictionalised version on NRL Cronulla Sharks legend Jason Steven’s life about his personal dealings with values, relationships, spirituality and the rivalry between NRL and AFL footy codes. Currently juggling future acting opportunities, Justin is Owner-Director of Dawn Properties Management, a family property investment management company established in 1959 using the best locations throughout the eastern part of Sydney with strong portfolios in Bondi and Paddington along with his USA portfolios in Los Angeles and Park City Utah.

Australian Girls ChoirThe Australian Girls’ Choir was established in 1984 by Judith Curphey OAM. Today there are over 4,000 girls learning to perform across Australia. Danii joined AGC when she was 7 and remained with the Choir for 12 years. We are thrilled that The AGC has accepted our offer of a DANII Foundation scholarship that was first awarded in 2013. In 2014 the DANII Foundation commenced a dual scholarship nationally – One to always go to a girl in NSW and the second scholarship to go to a girl in another Australian State.

Sarah Denniss – Sydney, NSWSarah joined the Sydney chapter of the AGC in 2012 and this year she gained a position in our highest performance group, Performing Choir. Throughout Sarah’s eight years with the AGC, she has been selected to participate in several of the specialist singing and dance ensembles. Later this year, Sarah will take part in the AGC’s International Tour where she will be visiting France, Germany, Netherlands and England.

Chelsea Bernard – Brisbane, QLDChelsea has been involved in the AGC in Brisbane since 2012 and she has been a member of the senior performance group, Camerata, since 2018. During her time with the choir Chelsea has been involved in the Cantissimo and Canto specialist singing ensembles and she has been selected to perform a solo part on three occasions at the major mid-year and end-of-year AGC Concerts.

“Sometimes your day is made special by sharing your T1 story and making the Danii foundation more visible to others. I am currently a District Relief teacher and have 22 schools on my list. Each morning I receive an email to say which school I need to go to and which class I will be teaching. Everyday I wear my helpful whistle on my Danii lanyard. Today a teacher whose class was visiting the class I was teaching saw my Danii lanyard and asked why I was wearing it. I explained I was the mum of a type 1 diabetic. She replied “so am I.” Even though we were surrounded by 50 students, we were able to share our stories briefly. Just as she was leaving she said how lovely it was to meet someone who understands. Her daughter is fairly new to the T1 family. My final comment was “Have you joined the Danii foundation yet?” She replied “not yet”. My response was “you must”. Would love to have spent time talking with her but the school bell rang. Charlotte Skinner: Age 12– Condobolin, NSWI was diagnosed with Type 1 on 29th December 2014, when I was 7yo. I have never let Diabetes stop me, nor will I ever let it stop me in the future! With the help of my CGM I am able to have the support from mum and dad when I’m not with them. I still get nervous and sleep overs are always at my house. But with the CGM it gives myself and my parents a little bit of peace of mind that they know what’s happening. Del Duffield: Age 17 – Reynella, SAI didn’t know anybody with Type 1 Diabetes before I was diagnosed. It was a lot to learn about and it was scary at times. Sometimes its ok and sometimes it’s really hard to deal with. One of the hardest things is people not knowing much about T1 and the constant conversations where I have to keep explaining what T1 is and the difference between T1 and T2. When I am finding it hard to deal with I try to remember “You have this condition for life and you need to do the best by you”

CGM technology has been awesome because I had 4 seizures within 12 months and that scared me and all my family so it’s good to know that my CGM can help and guide me to help keep my BGLs under control.
