Dear members of Holy Family, St. Mary and St. Anthony Parish:
“Jesus straightened up and said to her: Woman, where are they? Has no one
condemned you? She replied, No one sir. Then Jesus said: Neither do I condemn
you….”
(John 8:10-11)
“I do not condemn…” These are such powerful words from Jesus. Unlike those
with stones in their hands, he never gives up on another person. He never throws
anyone away. He who knows us through and through never loses sight of the good.
He never doubts that we can become whole again. He believes in resurrection!
This (Sunday) evening we are holding our Lenten Communal Penance Service at 7:00pm. St. Mary’s in
Neillsville is holding its service at 3:30pm today as well. St. Bernard’s in Thorp is this Monday at 7:00pm.
Who ever you are, who ever you have become, however you have been judged by others… or by yourself,
come and hear the Lord speak: “I do not condemn you!”
I entrust the final preparation for Holy Week this weekend to Fr. Joe as I will be at the Alpha Retreat. We
finish about noon. I will also miss St. Mary’s Communal Penance Service that afternoon because Asafa
Vaonirina has requested my presence at her Ordination Ceremony at Immanuel United Church of Christ at
3:30pm . Pastor Brian Campbell of Our Savior’s Lutheran and I are both most honored to be invited to be a
part of this wonderful celebration. We have all been blessed by Pastor Asafa’s insight and sensitivity.
Next Sunday is Palm Sunday! After recalling Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we read the Passion,
the account of his suffering and death. The Mass schedule is normal. Holy Thursday I will preside at the
7:00pm liturgy at St. Anthony’s and Fr. Bayuk will preside at the 7:30pm service in Greenwood. There will
be washing of the feet at both liturgies. The Holy Thursday liturgy ends with the procession recalling Jesus’
journey to the Garden of Gethsemane. All are invited to stay and keep vigil until 10:00pm in honor of Jesus’
request that we “watch and pray” with him.
Good Friday both Holy Family’s liturgy with Fr. Bayuk and St. Anthony’s liturgy will begin at 12:30pm.
The passion is read in a barren church. Then all are invited forward to venerate the cross, finding in Christ
the courage to embrace the cross ourselves.
The jewel in the ring of Holy Week is the Easter Vigil. The only liturgy on Holy Saturday will be celebrated
at Holy Family at 8:00pm. After gathering in the Church all will be invited outside to celebrate light’s
triumph over darkness with the lighting of the Easter fire. Led by the light of Christ we will re-enter the
Church and listen to the proclamation of Christ’s resurrection in the words of the ancient Exultet. After re-
membering God’s saving works throughout history we witness his saving work in our presence with the bap-
tism of two adults and the confirmation of a third. In holy communion we enjoy the closest thing to our di-
vine life to come here on earth. At the three liturgies Easter Sunday morning at 8:30am (SM), 9:30am (SA)
and 10:30am (HF) we watch the light grow and expand until the Son fills all hearts like the son fills the sky.
As beautiful as Holy Week will be, it is the beginning of 50 days of celebrating the resurrection. On April
3rd, Divine Mercy Sunday, our Sacred Worship Committee is encouraging everyone to take part in the Holy
Year Celebration of Mercy at St. Mary’s in Colby. There will be confessions from 2:00pm to 3:00pm then a
Holy Hour from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. During the Holy Hour there will be a presentation on Mercy and the
Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed. We will end with Benediction.
The following Tuesday, April 5, seven of us from Loyal and Greenwood will be boarding the plane to begin
our Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We will tour the places where the first Holy Week took place as part of a
group of 48 pilgrims from our Diocese. While gone Fr. Joe will be in charge making sure the resurrection
light continues to grow steadily here in the Heartland. I have grown quickly to like Fr. Joe. He has a beautiful
spirit moving through him. I have heard him say in word and deed many times already: “I do not condemn
you.”
Fr. Steve
