Dear People of Holy Family, St. Mary and St. Anthony Parish:

“I thirst.”

(Christ from the Cross)

(John 19:28)

Though his throat was parched and his need of water extreme, it was his longing for love

to flow from hardened human hearts that moved him to cry from the cross “I thirst!.” As

much as we long for an end to illness, hunger and violence, how much more did he who

experienced the divine love of his Father, desire that we would experience it too. It was

his last cry before yielding up his Spirit. Surely it was his deepest desire. I thirst!

What joy it must give Christ to see people flowing to Churches all over the world in response to his life, death

and resurrection. His great longing for us to come to him, his thirst, has drawn more and more people to him

until now over two billion will gather to give thanks for his sacrifice. Here in Loyal, Greenwood and Willard

we too will gather Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, to join in that

thanksgiving.

Reading the Passion of our Lord has never been the same for me since 2009 when Christ’s cry from the cross

stirred Don Ryder and Romey Wagner to respond to the needs of the drought stricken Massai people they had

recently visited in Kenya. The two of them, moved by their belief it was Christ suffering in the Massai

people, went on to put in a number of wells now providing 19,000 people with clean water along with all of

their live stock. Those wells are now watering the gardens we are helping the Massai people to grow.

I mention this now because Romey visited St. Anthony’s School a week ago Wednesday to pick up the bags

and bags of school supplies the St. Mary’s and St. Anthony’s school children had collected. He was

departing the next day to visit our sister parish in Kenya and promised to deliver the school supplies to the

school children there. And he promised once he arrived in Kenya to send pictures of the children there

receiving our gifts.

Romey also brought us the news that after two years of drought, they had received five days of rain in Kenya.

All were hoping a normal season of rain was beginning again. We pray with our sisters and brothers there

that the end of both drought and human suffering has arrived. May Christ’s thirst be satisfied.

Thirst of another kind is bringing about change in Greenwood these days. Perhaps by now you’ve heard that

after some 9 years as shepherd of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Pastor Brian Campbell is leaving us to

respond to a call to serve three churches in Oklahoma. As much as he loved the people of Greenwood,

Longwood and Owen, his roots and heart remained in urban ministry. He thirsted for city streets and diverse

communities. There is a farewell reception for him this afternoon (Sunday) at 2:00pm at Our Saviors. Then

he leaves shortly after Easter.

Pastor Brian has been the leader of the ecumenical movement in the Greenwood area as long as I have been

here. That includes being the one to call us together when it’s time to begin planning an event as well as be-

ing a very creative mind in putting together youth oriented services. Last Advent, when our churches met

together in observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, I became aware of his theological depth

and his great longing for the Christian community to be healed of its divisions. Pastor Brian, we will miss

you greatly! Blessings on your new ministry.

Lastly I make a small request on behalf of our Family Life Ministry. They have been giving welcome baskets

to new parishioners that includes a crucifix. Well, good news as it is, they have run out of their supply of

crucifixes! Before purchasing store bought ones, they wondered if any of the craftsmen/artists in the commu-

nity would like to make some. Contact Mary Ellen Volovsek, Barry Melcher, or Candy Strey if interested.

To all who will be travelling to be with family this Easter, I pray safe travel and quality time with loved ones.

For those who will be celebrating Holy Week here, I pray that the life giving love Christ so thirsts for will

pour forth from our hearts bringing healing and peace to our world. Looking forward to this journey with

you.

Fr. Steve

Church. Topic: A Clear and Shining Light: Celebrating St.

Clare of Assisi for Contemporary Women Lesser known than St.

Francis, but equally luminous in soul is St. Clare of Assisi. De-

fying both social prohibitions and no less than 4 popes, St. Clare

dared to write her own way of life (the first ever!). She invited

women into a sisterhood of equals to love God, to serve God,

and to deeply love one another's souls. We’ll use the stories of

her life to inspire our own creativity and courage to live well the

life God gives us. Presenter: Gabriele Uhlein, OSF, PhD is a

Wheaton Franciscan sister deeply influenced by Hildegard of

Bingen, Francis of Assisi and Teilhard de Chardin. She lives and

works at the Christine Center, a natural sanctuary for seekers of

all faith traditions that is committed to spiritual deepening for

global transformation. (www.christinecenter.org)

Chaplet of Divine Mercy. From 1931 – 1938 Our Lord

revealed the secrets of his great mercy to Saint Faustina.

He designated the first Sunday after Easter as the Feast of

the Divine Mercy to God. In preparation of this feast, he

asked that a novena be started on Good Friday, a novena

which asks for prayers, each of nine days, for a different

group of souls, in order to immerse them in the sea of

God’s Mercy. Confession is required on the day of or two

weeks before or after this feast, and Communion is required

on the day of the feast. Our Lord promised to the souls

who follow these requests a complete remission of sin &

punishment. Pamphlets are in the back of the Church.

The April meeting for St. Ann’s Society will be held on Monday, April 2, 2018 starting at 10:30 am at the Florence Briski home. Potluck lunch will be held after the meeting.
