Marriage and the Gift of Life “A certain sharing by man in God's lordship is also evident in the specific responsibility which he is given for human life as such. It is a responsibility which reaches its highest point in the giving of life through procreation by man and woman in marriage. As the Second Vatican Council teaches: "God himself who said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone' (Gen 2:18) and ‘who made man from the beginning male and female' (Mt 19:4), wished to share with man a certain special participation in his own creative work. Thus he blessed male and female saying: ‘Increase and multiply' “(Gen 1:28)” (Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, n. 43)

Fr. Tony’s Tidbit

Dear Friends,

“Every life is worth living.” That is the theme of this year’s Respect Life Program. Every October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life month. We take this month to focus on the dignity of all

human life. All around us we see ways in which human life is not respected. We see so many signs of death and destruction. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to respect all life from the moment of conception until natural death.

I would like to share a few thoughts on this year’s respect life theme from Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Chairman of Pro-Life Activities for the Catholic Bishops of the United States. “Whether it lasts for a brief moment or for a hundred years, each of our lives is a good and perfect gift. At every stage and in every circumstance, we are held in existence by God’s love. An elderly man whose health is quickly deteriorating; an unborn baby girl whose diagnosis indicates she may not live long; a little boy with Down Syndrome; a mother facing terminal cancer—each may have great difficulties and need our assistance, but each of their lives is worth living. Experiencing suffering—or watching another suffer—is one of the hardest human experiences. Fear of the unknown can lead us into the temptation of taking control in ways that offend our dignity and disregard the reverence due to each person. But we are not alone. Christ experienced suffering more deeply than we can comprehend, and our own suffering can be meaningful when we unite it with his. Especially in the midst of trials, we are invited to hold fast to the hope of the Resurrection. God is with us every step of the way, giving us the grace we need. In times of suffering, let us have the courage to accept help that others genuinely want to give, and give the help that others need. We were made to love and be loved; we are meant to depend on one another, serving each other in humility and walking together in times of suffering. Our relationships are meant to help us grow in perfect love.” Good words to reflect upon.

Let us join together this month and pray for a deeper respect for all human life and find little ways that we can show more respect for our lives and the lives of those surrounding us each day.

God Bless,

Father Tony

It is being called “Pilgrimage of Mercy” because Pope Francis proclaimed a Holy Year of Mercy (beginning December 8, 2015), and a tour with the sacred remains of St. Maria Goretti became a natural choice for the Church to promote the Holy Year. This is an awesome opportunity to honor our patroness, grow in mercy, and seek God’s grace and blessing. We’ll also visit the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Cost is $5 per person (for transportation), but bring money for lunch at the Shrine Restaurant. We’ll meet at 8:00 am at Holy Cross and return around 6:00 pm. We will be taking the mini bus (14 seats available). First come first serve, so turn in waivers and payment ASAP! We could possibly take more if another adult is willing to drive.
