WELCOME TO THE 2013 FALL SEED GUIDECrops include in this guide are winter wheat, winter barley, triticale, and alfalfa. You may receive this guide in the mail

or through the University of Nebraska Extension network. Either way, we appreciate the advertisers who support the print-ing of this guide. We also appreciate including information from the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association which makesit easier to find a certified seed source in Nebraska. The data and other information this guide is based one can be found atour web site at: http://cropwatch.unl.edu//web/varietytest/home and http://www.unl.edu/ncia . Additional information isavailable at the wheat variety virtual tour web site http://cropwatch.unl.edu/web/wheat/virtual or the winter wheat varietyselection tool page http://citnews.unl.edu/winter_wheat_tool/index.shtml.

We had late harvest for the Keith County trial to include the results in this seed guide. Our irrigated plots in Chase andCheyenne Counties were lost to hail damage. Last season we had dry condition at planting for a number of locations thatresulted in poor crop performance. Pest and disease incidence was also above normal. The pressure of saw fly was very highin the west. Septoria, leaf rust and strp rust incidence of various severity was observed in wheat fields in the east, and southcentral. Sever incidence affecting varietal ranking was not reported. Other challenges to wheat crop in 2013 included virus, fungal and bacterial leaf disease at jointing, dry conditions at grain filling, and some pest problems in the west. Overall, yield was very good in the east and south central.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis circular is a progress report of variety trials conducted by personnel of the Agronomy Department, West Central, and

Panhandle Research and Extension Centers and their associated agricultural laboratories. Conduct of experiments and publica-tion of results is a joint effort of the Agricultural Research Division and the Cooperative Extension Service. Tests were support-ed in part by fees paid by commercial seed companies and the Nebraska Wheat Board.

Special acknowledgment is made to farmer cooperators who furnished land for experiments; also to Extension Educators andothers who assisted with the tests. The authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of the technical support staff: Neal Mattox,Greg Dorn, Richard Little, Jeff Golus, Vern Florke, Mary Guttieri, Mitch Montgomery, and Jerry Nachtman. Their help is vitalto this research.

We would like to thank the Nebraska Wheat Board for contributing wheat check-off money and the Nebraska AgriculturalStatistics Service for compiling data on varieties and production of wheat.

This circular reports data from winter wheat trials conducted throughout Nebraska. Entries include commercial varieties andpromising experimental lines from Nebraska, surrounding states, and private breeders. The state has been divided into four dis-tricts for the purposes of variety testing (Panhandle, West Central, South Central, and Southeast).

There were 17 trials planted across the State of Nebraska in the fall of 2012. The Cheyenne Irrigated and Chase Irrigated siteswere lost due to hail damage late in the growing season. Names of cooperators, trial locations, planting dates, harvest dates, highest location mean yield, and mean of top five varieties are shown in Table A. Location specific information such as soiltype, tillage, previous crop, and fertilizer applications are shown in Table B. Plot sizes varied with location. Nursery-type plotssix rows wide and 15 to 35 feet long were planted at other locations. All tests were direct combined. Entries were replicated 3to 6 times.

WINTER WHEAT PERFORMANCEAccording to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, winter wheat was sown on 1.45 million acres similar to the previous

year. 1.32 million acres were harvested producing 41.76 million bushels of grain. The average winter wheat yield of Nebraskafor wheat harvested during the summer of 2013 was 36 bushels per acre (bu/a). Poor emergence in the fall due to the droughtresulted in below average performance across the much of the state while timely showers in eastern Nebraska allowed for higherthan normal yields. At the end of July, 75% of the wheat crop was harvested, behind the 100% last year and 89% average.Winter wheat yields and production from the previous 10 years are reported below.

Yielding ability of different varieties cannot be measured with absolute accuracy because of variations in local disease inci-dence, soil fertility, seasonal rainfall or moisture, and other factors. For this reason, small differences in yield have no signifi-cance. Unless the difference in yield of two varieties is greater than the difference required for significance shown in the tables, little confidence can be placed in the superiority of one variety over the other for measured traits in that particular test. Thesedifferences are shown at the 5% level, meaning that differences as large or larger could be expected through chance alone in 1of 20 trials (5%). Even though two varieties are not statistically different, there may be other factors which influence the choiceof one over the other. Factors such as disease resistance, grain quality, agronomic desirability or availability of seed may influ-ence that decision.

Complementary varieties are important when selecting additional varieties to grow. One definition of complementary varietiesis that they come from diverse parentages. A more in depth discussion of variety complementation is found in the CropImprovement section. In order to help select varieties with diverse parentages, the related families of many varieties are includ-ed in the characteristics chart.

    RESULTS AT INDIVIDUAL LOCATIONS

Panhandle:Seven locations were planted in the Panhandle District.

Irrigated trials were planted in Albin WY, Box Butte, andCheyenne counties. Rainfed trials were planted in BoxButte, Cheyenne, Kimball, and Scotts Bluff counties.

    • The Box Butte County Irrigated trial was planted onSeptember 20th. Emergence was good in the fall and was invery good condition throughout the growing season. Thefield had 100 lb N and 30 lb of P2O5 applied. Plots wereharvested on July 23rd with a top yield of 114 bu/ac and anaverage yield of 112 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

    • The Cheyenne County Irrigated trial was planted onSeptember 21st. This trial was not harvested due to exces-sive hail damage.

    • The Box Butte County Rainfed test was planted onSeptember 17th. Plots were harvested on July 23rd with a topyield of 47.8 bu/ac and an average yield of 46.1 bu/ac for thetop 5 varieties.

    • The Cheyenne County Rainfed trial was planted onSeptember 19th. Mace and Mellenium seed germination waspoor (~40%). Downy Brome was also prevalent in severalplots. Plots were harvested on July 22nd with a top yield of71.8 bu/ac and an average yield of 69.6 bu/ac for the top 5varieties.

    • The Kimball County Rainfed trial was planted onSeptember 14th. Mace and Mellenium seed germination waspoor (~40%). The fall proved to be very dry with and someseeds did not emerge until early spring. Plots were harvestedon July 16th with a top yield of 40.5 bu/ac and an averageyield of 38.9 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

    • The Scotts Bluff County Rainfed trial was planted onSeptember 18th. Very dry soil at planting resulted in pooremergence throughout the trial. Plots were harvested on July17th with a top yield of 30.2 bu/ac and an average yield of29.5 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

    • The Albin, WY Irrigated plot was planted on September24th. At the time of submitting this publication the trial hadnot yet been harvested. Look for results on the UNL VarietyTesting website:http://cropwatch.unl.edu/web/varietytest/wheat

West Central:Five locations were planted in the West Central District.

One irrigated trial was planted in Chase County. Rainfed tri-als were planted in Furnas, Red Willow, Keith, and Lincolncounties. All rainfed sites were left fallow during the previ-ous growing season with corn as the crop before.

    • The Chase County Irrigated test was planted onSeptember 26th. This trial was not harvested due to severehail damage.

    • The Furnas County Rainfed test was planted on October4th. Prior to planting 40 lbs N and 50 lbs P2O5 were broad-cast along with 60 lbs/a 11-52-0 as starter. Very dry soil anddrought conditions limited the overall yield potential of thistrial. Plots were harvested on July 8th with a top yield of 39.3bu/ac and an average yield of 38.2 bu/ac for the top 5 vari-eties.

    • The Red Willow County Rainfed test was planted onSeptember 25th. 20 lb of 11-52-0 was applied as starter. Plotswere harvested on July 5th with a top yield of 44.5 bu/ac andan average yield of 43.5 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

    • The Keith County Rainfed test was planted on October10th. 60 lb 11-52-0 and 60 lb N (32-0-0 top-dress) wasapplied to the field. At the time this publication was sent toprinting, the trial was not harvested. Look for results on theUNL Variety Testing website:http://cropwatch.unl.edu/web/varietytest/wheat

    • The Lincoln County Rainfed test was planted on October8th. Pre-emergence fertilizer 32-0-0 was applied at 60 lbs/ac.Plots were harvested on July 19th with a top yield of 47.9bu/ac and an average yield of 46.1 bu/ac for the top 5 vari-eties.

Southeast:There were three rainfed trials conducted in the Southeast

District at Saunders, Lancaster, and Saline counties. • The Lancaster County Rainfed test was planted on

September 26th in as part of a soybean-oat-wheat rotation.80 lbs of N was applied as fertilizer. Plots were harvested onJuly 11th with a top yield of 96.1 bu/ac and an average yieldof 92.4 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

    • The Saline County Rainfed test was planted onSeptember 26th into soybean stubble. 100 lbs of 11-52-0 wasapplied in the fall. Plots were harvested on July 8th with atop yield of 71.9 bu/ac and an average yield of 71.6 bu/ac forthe top 5 varieties.

    • The Saunders County Rainfed test was planted onSeptember 25th. A total of 80 lbs N was applied. Plots wereharvested on July 18th with a top yield of 99.1 bu/ac and anaverage yield of 94.6 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

South Central:There was one conventional rainfed variety trial conducted

in the South Central District at Clay Center in Clay County.

    • The Clay County Rainfed test was planted on September19th. A total of 80 lbs N was applied. Plots were harvestedon July 9th with a top yield of 98.7 bu/ac and an averageyield of 95.9 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

Organic Trial:• The Clay County Organic test was planted on October

4th and harvested on July 9th. This organic site uses a croprotation of 3 years alfalfa, corn, soybean, wheat/vetch, andpopcorn. This trial had a top yield of 79.8 bu/ac and an aver-age yield of 79.8 bu/ac for the top 5 varieties.

Protein data was collected from two replicates at eachlocation. The protein data was combined within each districtand reported in the district tables. Protein was determinedfrom whole grain using a Perten DA 7250 Near InfraredSpectrometer.
