The group will experience some of the main practices, the circle and the RP Questions. Objectives are: Build and strengthen staff/student community; Experience the circle process; Examine the definition, principles, and paradigm shift of RP; Review the Restorative Questions. Yet, high quality afterschool programs have the potential to improve school-day attendance by increasing student engagement, building a strong culture of attendance and helping schools reach out to struggling students. Learn how your program can leverage its assets to reduce absenteeism, educate families about the importance of attendance, and collaborate with schools and the district. Participants will also have the opportunity to complete a self-assessment offering insights into what they can do to reduce chronic absence. Main Presenter: Mimi Sarkisian Organization: BACR Title and Description: Motor! Creating a sensory and perceptual motor program for your school. The best way to understand the motor program is to participate or watch it in action. Come try it for yourself. There is a great deal of research that suggests specific movements lead to an increase in brain development. Activities that encourage children to go round and round, or back and forth, or up and down, or in and out, increase the production of connections in the brain. Main Presenter: Candice Wicks Organization: Be The Change Consulting Title and Description: Building Intentional Communities: Activities and Strategies to Embed Core Values with Youth and Staff Starting a program in the fall often involves new staff, new activities and a whole new schedule. How do you create a cohesive team unified in vision, behavior management strategies, and facilitation techniques? This training explores the importance of establishing a program culture based on core values, and ways to build your programmatic strategies on the strong foundation of a unified staff vision. Given the right social conditions and held to high expectations every young person has the opportunity to flourish. Building this environment is a complicated and nuanced art - one that requires cultural awareness, knowledge of social justice principles, and the practice of deep democracy. These essential skills translate and connect to academic instruction during the school day, and prepare students for success in work and life. Art lessons also offer rich opportunities for youth to develop leadership and collaboration skills. Performing Arts Workshop's Artistic Director, Gary Draper, will lead participants through an art lesson focused on the creative process and skill development. Main Presenter: Darlene A Hall Ph.D. Organization: Intersections Consultanting Title and Description: Trauma and Self-help Strategies Trauma is an anxiety experience that has both psychological and physiological impacts on the person traumatized. Utilizing a multi-perspective framework that focuses on the experiences of both the children and youth participating in out-of-school programs as well as the experiences of the adults who work with youth, this workshop will provide an overview of an expanded understanding of trauma beyond the most commonly known PTSD to include complex trauma, sociocultural trauma, secondary trauma, and intergenerational trauma. The workshop will also outline the 3 common experiences or symptoms of any form of trauma, identify key issues for workers to keep in mind when working with children and youth who experience trauma, and identify self-help/self-care strategies that workers can employ to help minimize, manage, and address their own trauma responses. There are two main types of Quality Coaching: 1) Supervisors and managers coaching their staff and 2) Network Consultants who act as advisors to administration and program staff. The Quality Coaching workshop is designed for both supervisors/managers and network consultants. It introduces the basics of developing a coaching relationship and a technique called Observation-Reflection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Main Presenter Name: Jennifer Hicks Workshop Title and Description: Reframing Conflict Reframing Conflict focuses on minimizing unproductive conflicts within your program through creating a positive environment that emphasizes highly engaging content and provides a youth-centered approach to handling conflict situations when they inevitably arise. A defining component of the Reframing Conflict method is the youth-centered approach. RESOURCE TABLE DESCRIPTIONS Resource Table Information: OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center - Urban Services YMCA The OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center is a community center housed at James Denman Middle School that provides educational, recreational, enrichment and supportive services to youth and families. We offer middle and high school after school programming daily during the school year and a six week summer camp program. Our programs are completely free and offer youth a variety of fun, enriching activities that support school day learning and promote positive social/emotional growth. In the evenings, we offer community programs to parents, families and local residents. We provide free activities for family engagement, health and wellness and offer pathways to life long learning. Some of the classes we provide: Badminton, Computer classes, Line Dance, ESL, Tai Chi, Salsa, Yoga, Zumba, Ceramics and a Strengthening Families Program. Also, our Wellness Services Program supports the physical and behavioral health needs of youth living in the Oceanview, Merced Heights, Ingleside and Excelsior neighborhoods. Our Wellness Services focus on helping youth make healthy choices and build on their strengths while addressing their challenges in a safe and caring environment.
