WELCOME TO THE 145th LAKESIDE CHAUTAUQUA SEASON

The Education Department has planned an exciting season of programs to promote intellectual growth on a variety of subject matters. Please review the information below and the entire schedule for the season to maximize your experience with the Education pillar.

SCHEDULE UPDATES, PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS & ROOM LOCATIONS

Read the weekly Lakesider newspaper for updates to the season’s schedule, full descriptions of program content, speaker backgrounds and the specific room location for each program. This booklet was last updated May 31, 2018.

LECTURE SERIES ETIQUETTE

Out of respect to the lecturers and courtesy to all in the room, the Education Department requests attendees follow the guidelines below when attending lectures:

1. Turn off all electronic devices before the lecture begins. 2. If expecting a call, place phone on vibrate prior to lecture, and step out of room before answering the phone. 3. Refrain from asking questions during the lecture unless specifically encouraged to do so by the presenter. 4. If asking a question, wait for a microphone to be brought to you before asking your question. 5. Keep your question on point and avoid long introductions to the question. 6. Avoid engaging in conversation with your neighbors during lectures. This is distracting to everyone around you. 7. Do not move chairs so that they block an aisle. Every aisle needs to be wide enough to allow wheelchair access. 8. Complete an evaluation form at the end of lectures to provide feedback and suggest topics/speakers for future

consideration.

HOW TO ACCESS SUPPLEMENTAL LECTURE SERIES MATERIALS

To promote further learning, speakers participating in the Chautauqua Lecture Series are asked to provide recommended reading lists, handouts and lecture PowerPoint slides for posting on the Lakeside Chautauqua Education Department webpage. These resources will be posted AFTER the lecture theme has concluded and remain on the webpage until after the season has ended. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact an Education Department staff member who can assist you in obtaining a printed copy of the materials. Please note that the Education Department is not able to videotape or audiotape the lectures. To access these resources online, follow the steps outlined below:

1. Visit www.lakesideohio.com/education/lecture-series. 2. Scroll down to the lecture you are interested in. You will see a summary of all lecture themes, followed by a

list of each individual lecture. 3. Click on the appropriate link to review materials provided by the speaker.

ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICE

Chautauqua Hall and Orchestra Hall are now equipped with hearing loops. These systems allow individuals to receive clear sound from the sound system directly to their hearing aid or cochlear implant. This eliminates most of the reverberation and background noise that can make it difficult to hear. To use the hearing loop system, the telecoil (also known as a t-coil) in the hearing aids will need to be turned on. Most hearing aids have t-coils. Contact your audiologist to learn how to turn on your telecoils. If your hearing aids lack a telecoil or you do not have hearing aids, but need assistance with hearing, a headset plugged into a loop receiver is available. Ask an Education Department staff member for more information about this new technology.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

In addition to the Chautauqua Lecture Series and Community Education programs, numerous Youth Education programs are offered on a variety of topics including music, history, science, geography, art and religion. A brochure listing these programs can be found at www.lakesideohio.com/education/programs, the Lakeside Chautauqua Administration Office or by asking an Education Department staff member for a copy.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRADUATE CREDIT

Lakeside Chautauqua is once again partnering with Lake Erie College to offer professional development graduate credit based on participation in educational and cultural arts programs at Lakeside. This opportunity is designed for educators needing to renew teaching licenses and/or gain professional development credit. Course Description “Using the Chautauqua Model for the Classroom” (ED 7305), will be offered through Lake Erie College. This one-credit course aligns to the Ohio Department of Education standards that identify the cognitive and creative learning process. These standards include: observing, producing/performing and responding/reflecting. Types of higher-level thinking for the elective process will include analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Requirements Requirements for the course include attendance at lectures, educational programs, cultural events and/or evening performances (totaling 15 hours) offered during the summer 2018 Lakeside Chautauqua season, as well as completion of assigned coursework. The deadline for submission of completed course assignments is August 4, 2018. Registration Participants must register for the course through Lake Erie College online at prior to attendance of a Chautauqua program used for contact hours. Once registered, course materials will be emailed with directions for completion. The last day to register for the course is July 29, 2018. ENDOWMENT FOR LIFE

The Endowment for Life Initiative raises endowment funds through deferred giving to support Lakeside Chautauqua’s future. The initiative offers the opportunity for a person/family to fund a named education week. If interested, please contact Gretchen Colon at (419) 798-5396.
