Taste of the Triangle2

Twenty years ago the first Taste of the Triangle was held in the Bank of America lobby where guests were served treats from a few local restaurants, such as Lorna’s and The French Gourmet. The event was so successful, EdUCate! board members knew it needed to get bigger.

Board members recruited Rashmi Bhargava and Louise Edwards, the very first Co-Chairs of Taste. Two instrumental women who, with no budget, visited, patronized, and begged the local restaurants to support Taste. They built Taste into EdUCate!’s signature event, where it still stands strong. Today, Taste includes a VIP reception, music, dancing, auctions, and lots of tastes from excellent restaurants.

How did EdUCate! come about in the first place? Deb Horwitz was at a Spreckels Discretionary Funds Committee Meeting and found it frustrating to simply write a check to help fund a certain item. It was then she decided that something had to be done to help provide additional support to our local schools. Soon thereafter, a meeting was held in her home with various community members to gauge interest in a new community foundation. Deb recalls that all the PTA groups were worried that they would be selling gift wrap.

But interest was building, and soon Mary Kay Hewitt came aboard to help incor-porate the foundation as a non-profit, since she had just done so with Grad Nite. Linda Katz helped with other background work, and Marcia Brumitt helped with developing the organizational structure. Marcia was recruited by Mary Kay during the Spreckels Halloween Costume Parade. Sandy Arkin ran strategic planning. Ann Wille and Carol May helped with marketing. Mary Kay also roped in Mary Carey. Miyo Reff was in charge of allocations who, when they were sitting around deciding on a shorter and more memorable brand than the name University City Foundation for Public Schools, noticed that there was a “UC” in educate, and bingo, EdUCate! was born.

A year or two later, one morning at Patricia Newman’s house, the group was trying to come up with a fundraising idea and knew they couldn’t leave that day without a viable idea. Eventually, Deb said that “everybody likes to eat, food is festive and brings people together and there’s this new idea of ‘Taste’ events, and could we pos-sibly try a local version? ... maybe with just desserts?” What would they call it? Deb, ever the English teacher seeking a snappy title, said “Taste of the Triangle.”

Here we are today, our 20th Anniversary of Taste of the Triangle at the intimate setting of the UCSD Faculty Club. An appropriate venue for an event that fund-raises to support public education. We honor those past EdUCate! board members

who set the groundwork for such a community-oriented group. Even today, lifelong EdUCate! advocates Mary Kay Hewitt and Mary Carey have been instrumental in helping organize this evening’s celebration. What visionaries these men and women were and are, understanding that the future of our society lays in the education of our youth.
