OPENING ACCLAMATION Book of Common Prayer, p. 351 Celebrant Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People His mercy endures forever. The Celebrant continues Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord. There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31 The Celebrant then says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. THE CONFESSION Book of Common Prayer, p. 351 Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Liturgy of the Word COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING Exodus 12:1-4, (5-10), 11-14 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. [Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn.] This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The cantor sings the Psalm verses. The congregation sings the Refrain where indicated.

1 I love the LORD, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, * because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him. (Refrain) 10 How shall I repay the Lord * for all the good things he has done for me? 11 I will lift up the cup of salvation * and call upon the Name of the Lord. 12 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord * in the presence of all his people. (Refrain) 13 Precious in the sight of the Lord * is the death of his servants. 14 O Lord, I am your servant; * I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. (Refrain) 15 I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving * and call upon the Name of the Lord. 16 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord * in the presence of all his people, 17 In the courts of the Lord’s house, * in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah! (Refrain)

THE EPISTLE READING 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL John 13:1-17, 31b-35

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you Lord Christ.

Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but

Page 8: Welcome to St. Richard’s Episcopal Churchimages.acswebnetworks.com/1/3008/040920MaundyThursdayA3.pdfThursday, April 9, 2020, 12:00 PM . We are a church on a mission to discover God’s

later you will understand." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord--and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you Lord Christ.

SERMON INVITATION TO COMPASSIONATE WITNESS On Ash Wednesday, at the beginning of Lent, we were invited to observe the holy season by reflection and re-commitment to leading lives that model who we are as followers of the Lord Christ. This time of preparation recommended an increase in prayer, modest periods of fasting with intention, and self-denial of those things and actions that stand between us and our God. This Lent, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have experienced new ways to pray in the silence of our rooms, new ways to fast with intention as we buy only what we need at the stores and as our community has fasted from the sacrament of the Eucharist, and have found new virtual ways of worshiping God and connecting to each other. Today, with Lent ended, we are invited to demonstrate in another way our commitment to follow in the steps of Jesus – as servant. After washing the disciples’ feet, an act of humble service, Jesus simply asks of them, “Do you know what I have done to you? I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.” As your priest and rector, I invite you to find a symbolic act of servant hood in commemoration of the act of servanthood Jesus demonstrated when he washed the feet of his disciples. How can you compassionately serve another in this time of isolation? A phone call, card, gift sent, local business supported. Whatever you might decide to do this Holy Week, remember that we are servants, not greater than our Lord, but faithful members of the household of God.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Celebrant May we who are merely inconvenienced, remember those whose lives are at stake.

May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable. May those who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May those who have the flexibility to care for our children when schools close remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel a trip remember those who have no safe place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market

Page 9: Welcome to St. Richard’s Episcopal Churchimages.acswebnetworks.com/1/3008/040920MaundyThursdayA3.pdfThursday, April 9, 2020, 12:00 PM . We are a church on a mission to discover God’s

remember those who have no margin at all. May those who settle for quarantine at home remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose love during this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us find ways to be the loving embrace to God and our neighbor. Amen.

Prayer by Cameron Wiggins Bellm Leader The Lord Jesus, after he had supped with his disciples and had washed their feet, said to them, “Do you know what I, your Lord and Master, have done to you? I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done.” People Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you. Leader I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you. People Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you. Leader By this shall the world know that you are my disciples: That you have love for one another. People Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you. Leader Love one another. Love the church universal and commit to its mission to discover God’s grace, change lives and change the world. People Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you. Leader Love all who might be in sorrow or pain. Remember that love extends through time and space and through the grave and gate of death love continues, peace is possible, hope is real. People Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you. Celebrant All

Call us closer to you in servanthood and love day by day. Amen.

PEACE

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS As we live-stream the celebration of Easter together, we recognize our continued ability to worship God and maintain our connection with each other. We don’t know how many weeks or months we will be navigating

through these difficult times, or when we can be together as a church family and feel the warm and loving embrace that is St. Richard’s. I am hopeful and encouraged that no matter how long a period of time goes by before we can all be together again, you will continue to regularly financially support St. Richard’s so that we can continue to support you through the pandemic. It is very important, when the pandemic is over, we be in the position to resume “our mission in the world”. Our commitment to the communities we serve and to each other is who we are as a congregation.

The Holy Communion

Our Eucharistic prayer for this liturgy is formally known as The Anaphora of the Apostolic Tradition, also known as the Anaphora of Hippolytus. It is an ancient Christian Anaphora. This anaphora, or Eucharistic prayer, is found in chapter four of the Apostolic Tradition, The Apostolic Tradition (or Egyptian Church Order) is an early Christian treatise of and provides us with information about church life and liturgy in the third century. Re-discovered in the 19th century, it was given the name of Egyptian Church Order. In the first half of 20th century this text was unanimously identified with the lost Apostolic Tradition presumed by Hippolytus of Rome. Due to this attribution, this manual played a crucial role in the liturgical reforms of mainstream Christian bodies. Recent scholarship has highly contested this attribution. If the Apostolic Tradition was work of Hippolytus, it could be dated about AD 215 and its origin would be Rome. The Anaphora is the most solemn part of the Divine Liturgy, or the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, during which the offerings of bread and wine are consecrated as the body and blood of Christ. This is the usual name for this part of the Liturgy in Greek-speaking Eastern Christianity. "Anaphora" is a Greek word (ἀναφορά) meaning a "carrying back" or a "carrying up", and so an "offering" In the sacrificial language of the Greek version of the Old Testament known as the Septuagint, προσφέρειν (prosphora) is used of the offerer bringing the victim to the altar, and ἀναφέρειν is used of the priest offering up the selected portion upon the altar.

All stand and remain standing until after the “breaking of the bread”.

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up unto the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord.

People It is meet and right. The Celebrant continues: We give thanks to you God, through your beloved son Jesus Christ, whom you sent to us in former times as Savior, Redeemer, and Messenger of your Will, who is your inseparable Word, through whom you made all, and in whom you were well-pleased, whom you sent from heaven into the womb of a virgin, who, being conceived within her, was made flesh, and appeared as your Son, born of the Holy Spirit and the virgin. It is he who, fulfilling your will and acquiring for you a holy people, extended his hands in suffering, in order to liberate from sufferings those who believe in you. Who, when he was delivered to voluntary suffering, in order to dissolve death, and break the chains of the devil, and tread down hell, and bring the just to the light, and set the limit, and manifest the resurrection, taking the bread, and giving thanks to you, said, "Take, eat, for this is my body which is broken for you." Likewise the chalice, saying, “This is my blood which is shed for you. Whenever you do this, do this in memory of me.” Therefore, remembering his death and resurrection, we offer to you the bread and the chalice, giving thanks to you, who has made us worthy to stand before you and to serve as your priests. And we pray that you would send your Holy Spirit to the oblation of your Holy Church. In their gathering together, give to all those who partake of your holy mysteries the fullness of the Holy Spirit, toward the strengthening of the faith in truth, that we may praise you and glorify you, through your son Jesus Christ, through whom to you be glory and honor, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit, in your Holy Church, now and always, Amen. As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, THE LORD’S PRAYER Book of Common Prayer, p. 364

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. THE INVITATION TO HOLY COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a personal devotional that anyone can pray at any time to express their desire to receive Holy Communion at that moment, but in which circumstances impede them from actually receiving Holy Communion. The Celebrant invites the following prayer to be said by all.

Let us Pray: My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I love you above all things, and long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
