TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

” From the Desk of our Parochial Vicar.........In this 21st Sunday of Ordinary time, we hear the conclusion of the Bread of Life Discourse. It has been on

ongoing dialogue between Jesus and his followers. As I spent some time in prayer reflecting on what the dialogue is meant to convey, I came across several reflections by saints throughout the course of history who penned their confessions about Jesus and the Eucharist.

I came to one conclusion: The Eucharist is the point where we bond ourselves with God the Father through this Son. In other words, we enter into the very truth that God has given to us, and hold in deep within our core as the Body of Christ. What the Word Incarnate has revealed to us is the truth.

When we look at the final part of the Bread of Life Discourse, this is what the Jews continued to argue and whisper to each other. It was the difficulty in accepting the truth of God.

Many of Jesus‘ disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”At the very start of the Liturgy of the Eucharist (after the Homily) we profess all together: “I believe in one God…”This act of faith and expression of our belief is very significant because in profession this one small line, we

are stating our intention of holding, not just what the church teaches, but what has been revealed to us through Jesus Christ. What has been taught by Jesus Christ about how we live and how we treat one another. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says,

“Our profession of faith begins with God, for God is the First and the Last, the beginning and the end of everything. The Credo begins with God the Father, for the Father is the first divine person of the Most Holy Trinity; our Creed begins with the creation of heaven and earth, for creation is the beginning and the foundation of all God’s works.”

When Jesus’ followers heard him say “eat my flesh and drink my blood” They knew it was much more than a prescribed ritual; they were being asked to live an upright life -- a life that God had intended for them to live from the beginning. To this day the church continues to call us to a holy, upright life. It teaches the sanctity of marriage of the husband and wife; to uphold the dignity of the person; to leave our former way of life and follow Jesus. And still the response for many people who do not want to give up the life is the same, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?”

So, as the Gospel continues, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

I conclude with a portion St. Catherine of Sienna’s reflection of the Eucharist. She says,

“O inestimable charity! Even as You, true God and true Man, gave Yourself entirely to us, so also You left Yourself entirely for us, to be our food, so that during our earthly pilgrimage we would not faint with weariness, but would be strengthened by You, our celestial Bread. O man, what has your God left you? He has left you Himself, wholly God and wholly Man,

concealed under the whiteness of bread. O fire of love! Was it not enough for You to have created us to Your image and likeness, and to have recreated us in grace through the Blood of Your Son, without giving Yourself wholly to us as our Food, O God, Divine Essence? What impelled You to do this? Your charity alone. It was not enough for You to send Your Word to us for our redemption; neither were You content to give Him us as our Food, but in the excess of Your love for Your creature, You gave to man the whole divine essence...”

Activities for the students and staff of St. Pius X Catholic School are in full swing. We have just completed our second full week of school and have already had our first PTO meeting and Parent

Orientation, first weekly school Mass, first fire drill of the school year, Race for Education fundraiser kick-off, and much more. By the time this coming week is over, our fall pictures will have been taken, a student designed Halloween T-Shirt selected and our Student Council officers elected.

Our first P.T.O. Meeting/Parent Orientation was well attended. It provided parents with lots of information about the school, fundraisers, organizations to get involved with and goals for the year. After the meeting, parents visited the classrooms where they met with the teachers and learned about their child’s curriculum and teacher expectations.

Student Council elections will be held on Friday. Results will be published in next week’s bulletin. The offices that will be voted on are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Chaplain. Our school is blessed to have one of the best Student Councils in town. Last year they raised close to $2000 with their Healthy Heart Cart sales. These are snack items they sell after school on the court. They donated $1000 of their proceeds to our school library for new books and bought new grass that was planted in our prayer gardens. Their sponsor is Mrs. Stovall, our 5th grade teacher.

Our Blue Jay of the Day and Gospel Value of the Month reward programs are in full swing. Students selected through one of these programs are announced during our morning announcements. The students love to hear their name announced over our live announcements in the morning.

Continue to pray for the continued success of St. Pius X Catholic School.Have a Blessed Week!

CCD / CONFIRMATION REGISTRATIONIt is time again to register your children for

CCD and/or Confirmation classes. You can obtain the registration form from the back of the church, from the Parish Office or from the St. Pius X website. Please do this as soon as possible so that we can be sure we have the Catechists needed to work with your child/children in faith formation. If you have any questions, call Sr. Barbara Netek at 993-9024.

Confirmation I (first year of preparation) Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday evening at 6:30.

Please specify which night your teen will be attending the class. The classes are not interchangeable. If you choose Monday you must attend the Monday class and the same is true for the Wednesday class. In any case the class begins at 6:30 pm. ANY CONCERNS OR QUESTIONS, call Sr. Barbara Netek.

RCIA Inquiry Sessions all Sundays in August

Inquiry sessions for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) are now meeting. If you are not a member of the Catholic Church and are simply

curious; if you are a Catholic returning to the Church; if you are a Catholic in need of your First Communion and Confirmation, join the RCIA team on Sunday in CC-2 from 9:00 to 9:45 AM. You, too, may be able to say that RCIA “has been a beautiful journey of exploring and learning about my spiritual life. “ For more information, contact Sister Annette Wagner at 993-0299 or [email protected]. (Walk-ins are welcome!)
