deserving children in the village of Fr. Vic in the Philippines
continue their education. Currently there are 12 high school
students being assisted through this collection.
Needed: A carpenter is needed to make a couple of cross stands.
Please see or call Fr. Vic if interested.
Development And Peace – Caritas Canada: To everyone who
gave up cakes, cookies, chocolates, ice cream or whether you held
soup lunches or took part in Think Fast – you’ve been amazing!
Please know that your efforts this Lent really have transformed
lives around the world. You have brought comfort and hope to
people in poverty. You have provided food for people who are
hungry; water to those who thirst, and light to people facing a dark
future. With your donations, we will be able to continue our work
in Haiti to help peasant women repair their homes and re-launch
their agricultural activities as a result of Hurricane Matthew. Thank
you.
Sisters in Christ 'No Greater Love': High school-aged young
women are invited to the Sisters in Christ 'No Greater Love' retreat
from May 5-7 at the George Vari women's residence of Sacred
Heart College (105 Aylmer Street, Peterborough). These
discernment retreats are hosted by the Vocations Office and offer
young women a chance to learn more about their faith, to discern
their vocations and to have fun with friends. Talks will focus on
the 4 types of love, as outlined in C.S. Lewis' 'The Four Loves.'
Early bird registration (before April 30) is $25 and registration is
$30 afterwards. Register at www.ptbovocations.ca/sic and email
[email protected] if you have questions.

all. Bring you instruments and your voice. Beginners are welcome
to join so they would learn something.

May 27 (last Saturday) at 11:00am in the church, there will be a
schedule healing Mass which includes the sacrament of holy
anointing especially for the sick in our parish community. The
Vatican council II helped changed the name from extreme unction
to anointing of the sick. It is not a sacrament intended only for
those who are the point of death. As soon as any of the faithful
begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, this is
already a suitable time for them to receive this sacrament. If you
know of someone who is homebound kindly provide a ride for
them to church. Let us assist and support in whatever ways we can
to show that we care for the elderly and the infirm.
Gospel Luke 24.13-35 www.loyolapress.com
Jesus appears to two disciples who are walking to Emmaus.
Gospel Reflection
On most Sundays during the Easter season in Cycle A, our Gospel
is taken from the Gospel of John. This week’s Gospel, however, is
taken from the Gospel of Luke. As in last week’s Gospel, today’s
Gospel shows us how the first community of disciples came to
believe that Jesus had risen from the dead. In these stories we gain
insight into how the community of the Church came to be formed.
When we read today’s Gospel, we may be surprised to learn that
these friends of Jesus could walk and converse with him at some
length yet not recognize him. Again we discover that the risen
Jesus is not always easily recognized. Cleopas and the other
disciple walk with a person whom they believe to be a stranger;
only later do they discover that the stranger is Jesus. We learn that
the first community met and recognized Jesus in the breaking of
the bread, just as we meet Jesus in the Eucharist. We can imagine
the feelings of the two disciples in today’s reading. They are
leaving their community in Jerusalem. Their friend Jesus has been
crucified. Their hope is gone. They are trying to make sense of
what has occurred, so that they can put the experience behind
them. Jesus himself approaches the two men, but they take him for
a stranger. Jesus asks them what they are discussing. He invites
them to share their experience and interpretation of the events
surrounding his crucifixion and death. When the two disciples have
done so, Jesus offers his own interpretation of his crucifixion and
resurrection, citing Jewish Scripture. In that encounter we find the
model for our Liturgy of the Word—what we do each time we
gather as a community for the Eucharist. We reflect upon our life
experiences and interpret them in light of Scripture. We gather
together to break open the Word of God. In the next part of the
story, we find a model for our Liturgy of the Eucharist. The
disciples invite the stranger (Jesus) to stay with them. During the
meal in which they share in the breaking of the bread, the
disciples’ eyes are opened; they recognize the stranger as Jesus. In
the Eucharist too we share in the breaking of the bread and
discover Jesus in our midst. Just as the disciples returned to
Jerusalem to recount their experience to the other disciples, we too
are sent from our Eucharistic gathering. Our experience of Jesus in
the Eucharist compels us to share the story with others.
