Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait

of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus' "royal portrait" is the cross. From this "throne," the crucified "crown prince"

welcomes by "executive pardon" the kingdom of mercy's first citizen, a fellow criminal. The "Good Thief" requests neither

deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: "Remember me when . . ." (Luke 23:42). "Today you will be with me,"

King Jesus promises, "in paradise." (23:43). Paradise, even for non-believers, is an image of creation contentedly

in harmony with self, fellow creatures, and Creator. Today, we "good thieves" beg Jesus to remember us. We promise

to remember that, although Jesus' kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus' returns, that kingdom begins today in the

paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and

undeservedly by Jesus' mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy.

YOUTH GROUP

This kind of examination helps us not only at the end

of a jubilee year, but also at the end of every single day. When Saint Ignatius of Loyola began his nightly

reviews, he always began in gratitude, thanking God for specific gifts from the day. If we've had a par-

ticularly rotten day, we might look to Saint Paul for inspiration. His words to the Colossians remind us that

all fullness "was pleased to dwell" in Jesus, who died to reconcile us to God and to open the gates of Paradise. Truly, we can always give thanks for that!

With grateful hearts, then, we proceed with our re-view. How did we cooperate with God as sons and

daughters of the Kingdom? How did we bring a little bit of Paradise to others today? How did we stand in

God's way, becoming obstacles to others' journey to Paradise? Asking the Lord to have mercy on our

weakness, we give hearty thanks for allowing us to work for the Kingdom. All praise to Christ the King!

I rejoiced because they said to me,

"We will go up to the house of the LORD."

-- Psalm 122:1

Be prepared. It's that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is fo-cused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can't escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonder-fully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.,

Estar preparado. Debemos estar preparados. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
