From The Pastor’s Desk As I prepare to take leave of St. Alphonsus Parish after eight years, and since the present restrictions will prevent any normal leave taking, I want to share a few reflections over the next several weeks in these pages.

Part 1

I appreciate this opportunity to share some thoughts about my time at St. Alphonsus with you. In eight years, I can count the number of bad days on one hand. That is pretty amazing! This assign-ment has been a great blessing and grace to me.

One of the greatest blessings in my time here has been my brother priests and my colleagues. It has been a joy to work with them. In particular, I want to recognize our retired pastor, Fr. Alan Jurkus, who was a kind and helpful mentor. I enjoyed his great sense of humor and learned from his keen insights. He is the one who helped me take up the leadership role as pastor.

I was blessed to work alongside two fantastic associate pastors: Fr. Kevin Barnekow and Fr. Britto Suresh. Father Kevin is a brilliant and faithful priest. We know he will do great things as a psycholo-gist. Our parish has been blessed that he remains connected to us. Of course, these last four years have been marked by Fr. Britto’s presence with us. He has proven himself as a priest with the heart of the Good Shepherd. In particular, I appreciate all that he did for me when I was away studying Canon Law. I will never be able to repay him! Saint Kilian in Hartford has been favored by God in getting him as their next pastor. It has also been fun to welcome Fr. Patrick as a brand new priest and as our new associate pastor. He and Fr. McManaman will make a great team.

And, I cannot forget Fr. Wally. Father Wally has shared with me his joy in being a priest (for 62 years!) and his love of this parish. It was a grace to be able to live with him in the new parish house. I am confident that if I return in 25 years, Fr. Wally will still be here and still be in better shape than me.

Not every parish is blessed with the presence and service of deacons. It has been a joy to serve alongside Deacon Jim and Deacon Ted. They are both extremely generous men, who have made service to this parish a priority in their busy lives. God bless them and their families!

Our parish is served by a wonderful staff. Their hard work, competence, and commitment to the mission, makes every priest who comes through St. Alphonsus look good. People would often thank me for something, and most of the time I would have to tell them that it wasn’t my doing, it was the work of the staff. Continue to support and encourage the staff in their work. They have been an absolute delight to work with.

(Next week, in Part 2, I’ll share a few thoughts on prayer and liturgy.)

Sincerely yours in Christ,

-Fr. Aaron Esch

Meet Our New Associate

Pastor Fr. Patrick Magnor It is a great joy to begin my priestly ministry at St. Alphonsus! I want to take this opportunity to let you know a little bit about my-self.

I grew up in Brookfield, and I am one of eight children!

As you can imagine, there was always a lot of noise and activity in my house growing up, but Christ was always at the center of it all.

My parents are my heroes! From an early age, they impressed on me the importance of the Catholic faith. They did their best to follow the Lord in their daily lives and sacri-ficed much to see that each one of my sib-lings was brought up in the faith. I believe my vocation to the Catholic priesthood is rooted in their commitment to the sacrament of mar-riage.

That being said, I did not always want to be a priest. I have always been a “hands-on” type of person. In high school, I learned how to weld and worked as a welder for several sum-mers. After high school, I studied Operations Management at UW-Whitewater, in hopes to use my technical skills and business degree to one day work at my family's business. But the Lord had other plans!

During my senior year of college, I began to realize that the Lord might be calling me to be a priest. After a lot of prayer and discernment, I decided to “jump out of the boat” and began my seminary studies at St. Francis De Sales Seminary in 2014.

My six years of seminary was a time of prayer and preparation for priesthood. During this time, I had the great opportunity to be as-signed to Holy Apostles in New Berlin for 5 years as a seminarian intern. I learned a lot from the people of Holy Apostles!

I was ordained a priest on May 16, 2020. I am only less than a month in, but being a priest has been a great joy and privilege! I am excited to begin my first assignment at St. Alphonsus! So many parishioners have al-ready welcomed me, and I already feel at home here.

I look forward to getting to know you all! -Fr. Patrick Magnor

Laudato Si – “Praise Be To You,” From The

Care For Creation Committee We continue in the year 2020 to face the challenge Pope Francis' encyclical letter has given us. Each month, we will offer “One Simple Act” suggestions to incorporate into our daily lives. Two weeks of doing something can make it a habit.

From Pope Francis’ encyclical letter: “Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as reducing water consumption and cooking what can only reasonably be consumed.”

ONE SIMPLE ACT: PREPARE MEALS FROM YOUR REFRIGERATOR FIRST, NOT FROM YOUR FREEZER OR PANTRY. The average American consumes more than 1,000 gallons of water indirectly through their diet each day. Wasted food = Wasted water. Check your refrigerator first to avoid spoilage, over shopping, extra trips to the grocery store and wasted money!

An Invitation If you know folks who are not Catholic and do not have a church home, why not invite them to consider the Catholic way of life? For further information regarding the process of becoming Catholic, please contact Sister Eileen: [email protected]; 421-2442 x 224.
