In a country renowned for its dramatic scenery, Skye and Lochalsh is in the premier league. In addition to breathtaking landscapes, the area also has a thriving craft community.

Welcome to

Skye and Lochalsh

TO BE UPDATED

View the Skye CuillinThe Portree road at Sligachan offers the first hints of grandeur. There are more rewards for those taking the A863 west to Glenbrittle. Another unmissable excursion is to Elgol from Broadford. Boat trips go out from Elgol across Loch Scavaig for a nearer view of a mountain panorama some rate as the very finest anywhere in Britain.

Explore AfloatElgol is the base for trips to the Small Isles and Loch Coruisk, while from Armadale you can go whale-watching in the Sound of Sleat. Alternatively take a wildlife cruise from Plockton, or from Kyle of Lochalsh on a glass-bottom boat. CalMac, the main island ferry operator, also offer day excursions from Uig.

Palm Trees and High PeaksSet round its sheltered bay, Plockton is a little community with a choice of places to eat, as well as boat hire and trips, railway station, shops and even palm trees confirming the prevailing mildness. Nearby are many points of interest, including Lochalsh Woodland Garden, the much photographed Eilean Donan Castle, and the famous landmark peaks of the Five Sisters of Kintail.

An Island Geology LessonNorth of Portree, the Trotternish Ridge - the edge of an ancient lava sheet - stretches for around 20 miles (31km) in a line of continuous cliffs. Landslips long ago created fantastic rockforms and pinnacles. These include the Old Man of Storr, easily visible from the

main road. The weird rock shapes of The Quiraing above Staffin are perhaps the most extraordinary of all, with features such as the Needle, the Prison and the Table. The unspoilt island of Raasay offers the chance to explore.

Crafts and ShoppingKyle of Lochalsh, Broadford and Portree are the main population centres and have a good selection of shops. Throughout, visitors will find a wide range of craft businesses, drawing inspiration from their magnificent surroundings - fine hand-made jewellery, swords, candles, pottery, sheepskins, designer knitwear, batiks and lots more.

WildlifeThe chances of spotting an otter are good, especially along the sea-loch tidelines - try the Kylerhea Otter Hide. Pine marten can be found in the Lochalsh woodlands, and the headlands around Portree are one of the places where sea eagles can be observed.

Clan Castles, Ancient BrochsDunvegan Castle & Gardens, the ancestral home of

the Clan Macleod for 800 years, is just one popular venue in the north of Skye. In the south, the story of Clan Donald, the Lords of the Isles, is told on Skye’s Sleat peninsula. On the mainland are the ancient Glenelg brochs. Two well-preserved examples of these early fortresses are adjacent to the superbly scenic road to the little ferry crossing at Kylerhea.

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

Our handmade stoneware tableware & individual

ceramics are both functional & decorative.

Our work is greatly influenced by the sea, landscape

& wildlife of Skye. The making processes - throwing,

turning, glazing, decorating, firing, etc, may be seen

at different times.

The pottery is in wooded

grounds at the head of Loch

Greshornish, 100 metres off

the A850, 14 miles from

Portree, and 8 from

Dunvegan & 48 from the

Skye Bridge.

Started in 1971, Stuart now

works with his wife Julie and

usually another potter.

The pots are once fired, to

1300° C, in a 60ft' woodfired

kiln. They also have great fun

with a 30ft' gas fired salt

glaze kiln.

DAY TRIPS

SKYE TO ST KILDAUK’S ONLY UNESCO DUAL WORLD HERITAGE SITE & NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE

Visiting St Kilda is something we’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember...

“”

...and it totally exceeded expectations. Your skipper and crew were great and taught us lots, the boat trip was superb and the islands themselves perfect. Having a glorious sunny day was the icing on the cake. I can honestly say it was one of my most memorable days ever.

St Kilda

One of the world’s special places. The archipelago of St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles, lies in the Atlantic Ocean, 41 miles (66 kilometres) west of Benbecula in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Its islands, with their exceptional cliffs and sea stacs, are rich in wildlife and form the most important seabird breeding station in north-west Europe. The evacuation of its native population in 1930 brought to a close an extraordinary story of survival.

Today, three organisations, The National Trust for Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the MoD work in partnership to further a continuing programme of conservation and research on the islands to ensure the care and protection of this World Heritage Site.

Page 46: Welcome to Skye and Lochalsh

Dual World Heritage Site St Kilda is one of only 29 global locations, and the only UK location to be awarded World Heritage Status for both natural and cultural significance.

The remote Hebridean Islands share this honour with natural and cultural wonders such as the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in Peru, Mount Athos in Greece and the Ukhahlamba/ Drakensberg Park in South Africa.

What to do on St KildaOn arrival in Village Bay, passengers make the short transfer by Zodiac dinghy to the main St Kilda island of Hirta. Passengers are free to explore the Island. The St Kilda museum, school and Church provide a fascinating insight into the way of life of the St Kildans prior to their evacuation in 1930. The remains of the village, the graves and First World War gun are all open to view. By request at time of booking we may be able to arrange a guided walk. The season for puffins is usually from end of April to early August, and for gannets, from April to October.

Historic connection between Skye and St KildaThe St Kilda group of islands was for centuries part of the lands of the MacLeod clan seated in Dunvegan Castle, Skye. They were sold in the 1930s after the islanders had been evacuated.

General Details

Using either inland lochs or sheltered parts of the sea we run sessions adapted to those taking part. Depending on the weather it can be a trip along some of our incredible coastline, exploring cliffs stacks and caves, a skills training course following the BCU 1-3 star scheme, or a games session which develops skills and confidence.

Open canoes (used to be more commonly known as 'Canadian canoes') are fantastic for all ages. Often seen as a more relaxing and usually 'dryer' watersport, using an inland loch, we introduce canoeing as a means of transport.

Using small local crags, we can teach you the ropes and get you moving on rock. Easy scrambles will lead to more challenging and steeper climbs.

See it as a snowboard with wheels... We use balance boards and then a nursery slope to start you off developing new skills. Soon you will be slaloming and maybe even jumping kickers. Pads and helmets mean that the occasional tumble shouldn’t slow you down in progressing in this great new sport.

The Trotternish ridge, the Quiriang and the Storr provides some of the most spectacular fell walking in Britain with its rounded moorland hills carved by a huge craggy cliff with its towering pinnacles and circling ravens. However one of our favourite walks is to Rubha Hunish, past the deserted village of Erisco, a moving and special place, to the sea cliffs where we often see whales.

It was once the duty of every man in Britain to practice archery, one day a week and normally in the high street..! We don't really have a high street but we will still give you the opportunity to learn how to use a bow and arrow. Target archery is enjoyable and usually becomes highly competitive.

Sessions are always adapted to the ability and ages of those participating, and normally last half a day. Longer sessions, trips or courses can also be arranged. All should be pre-booked which can be done either by a visit, phone or e-mail. Whitewave provides all technical and safety equipment. For archery, climbing & walks we ask folk to bring water proofs and warm clothing and strong footwear. For watersports, a pair of old trainers, a t-shirt and sweat shirt to wear under our wetsuits, and a towel. Whitewave has safety as the highest priority, and uses appropriately qualified and certified instructors and holds a license from the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority to provide watersports, hill walking, mountaineering and single pitch rock climbing. Details can be obtained from the AALA on 01222755715

AS SEEN ON

“A rare opportunity to see Britain’s largest and rarest bird of prey - the White Tailed Sea Eagle as well as local marine life and Skye’s spectacular scenery”.

White Tailed Sea Eagle

Let us take you to the land of the White Tailed Sea Eagle. The crew of the “Stardust” have been successfully perfecting the feeding of the White Tailed Sea Eagle since 1998.

The White Tailed Sea Eagle is Britain’s largest bird of prey and the fourth largest raptor in the world. It is now (after re-introduction) native to these parts once again.

We regularly feed these great birds on our trips and between the months of June and September you may be able to observe their young.

We have appeared on BBC’s nature calendar and various wildlife programmes - home and abroad. We are well recommended.

Whale Watching

2014 was the best year we have ever had for Whales. We had regular sightings of Minke and Humpback whales from May until December and also regular sightings of Basking Sharks. Check out our photo gallery for pictures taken from our boats. Also have a look at us on FACEBOOK – Stardust Boat Trips Isle Of Skye, our page is updated regularly.

Private Charters

When the MV Stardust is not providing informative trips around Portree Bay and the Sound of Raasay, we offer people the chance to book the vessel for private charters. These can include fishing trips and evening cruises.

We will supply all the fishing rods and equipment you will need as well as binoculars for getting a close up view of the local wildlife.

If you are in or around the Portree area, give us a call and we will collect you from your B&B or hotel free of charge, maximum of 6 people.

We have rain capes available although warm and wet weather gear is advisable.

Boat Trips

Come aboard the “Stardust” and enjoy a 90 minute unforgettable cruise down the Sound of Raasay with the “Stardust” Skipper, “Dan” (who has over 40 years experience in these waters), let him tell you about some of our local history.

See Skye from the sea - Spectacular Scenery and unbelievable wildlife, including: Seals, Porpoises, Sea Eagles, Puffins, Buzzards, Gannets, Gulls, Herons, Guillemots, Otters, Dolphins and Whales. We see most of the above species daily but not on every trip.

The MV Stardust is fully equipped with all safety equipment - fully RYA/MCA coded and fully insured. It is licensed to carry up to 12 passengers + 2 crew.

To avoid disappointment, please book in advance. We operate all year - so give us a call.

Glencoe is famed for its majestic mountains and stunning geological formations. But it is as the site of the most notorious massacre in British history that the glen has acquired its dramatic atmosphere. Find out all about the glen’s remarkable history, landscape and wildlife in an exciting exhibition, Living on the Edge, in the Trust’s eco-friendly visitor centre. Outside, the glen is a paradise for walkers, from gentle strolls amid breathtaking scenery to challenging climbs for experienced mountaineers. An easy walk is to Signal Rock, thought to be the spot where the signal was given for the massacre of 1692 to begin.

Attadale Gardens and Sculpture

Started by Baron Schroder in the late 19thcentury, hill paths meander through 20 acres of conifers and rhododendrons.

Totally transformed after the 1980 storms by ownerNicky Macpherson, it is now a painter’s garden, designed to frame the magnificent views of Skyeand the surrounding hills. Waterfalls, Monetbridges, meconopsis, bamboo and candelabraprimula are reflected in dark pools. Sculpturelurks in unexpected places.

The line used in filming the Harry Potter movies.

THE JOURNEYFort William to Mallaig

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting at the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan.

Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.

The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.

FORT WILLIAM TO MALLAIG

HOW TO GET TO FORT WILLIAM...

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.

Visit one of the best-preserved Jail and Courtroom buildings in the world. See how real trials were conducted in Argyll’s County Court, hear echoes of the past as you walk through the prison cells and find out what life was like for the men, women and children - some as young as seven - who were tried and locked up all those years ago.
