High Holidays Babysitting

BABYSITTING IS BY RESERVATION ONLY,

Babysitting will be available for children 1-5 years old by

PRIOR RESERVATION ONLY starting at the beginning of

services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, and on

Yom Kippur evenings for Kol Nidre and Ne’ilah.

Please register at asbi.org by MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, at

5:00 PM.

The cost for Rosh Hashanah is $36 per child, which includes

babysitting on day one and two as well as snacks and light

lunch for both days.

The cost for Yom Kippur is $30 per child, which includes Kol

Nidre, Yom Kippur morning (with snacks and light lunch), and

Ne’ilah.

The Yad Vashem light is kindled on the back wall of the sanctuary to mark the 73rd yahrzeit, this Wednesday night and Thursday, of

the entire Jewish community of Mariampole, Lithuania, the birthplace of the founders of our Congregation. The Nazis

murdered more than seven thousand men, women and children there, leaving no survivors, culminating on 9 Elul 5701 (September

1, 1941).

May the memories of our martyrs be everlasting blessings.

Beit Midrash Wednesdays is Back! Starting this month, we will resume our weekly Beit Midrash

Wednesdays with dinner and open learning, followed by an

accessible and thought-provoking shiur.

Join us on September 10 and September 17 for a two-session

series taught by Hillel Nadler.

Dinner will be from 6:30 – 7:00 PM, followed by a break for

Mincha/Ma’ariv and class at 7:45 PM.

RSVP’s are required for dinner. The cost for dinner is $5. Online registration will open next

week, or you can email shul@asbi.org by 11:00 AM on

Wednesday.

Dinner walk-ins will be accommodated as possible at $10 per person.

A greeting from Ayala Klein, one of Chicago’s new shinshiniyot

I'm from Modi'in, Israel and I’ve just graduated from Ulpana Bnai Akiva high school. My favorite subjects are art, chemistry and computer science. I hope to work in this field when I enter

the Israeli army next year. I have one older sister, Chen, and one younger sister, Riki.

In my free time I was very involved in the youth movement called Tzofim—the Israeli Scouts—and was responsible for the connection between my

"shevet" (chapter) and the community in Modi'in. I held leadership roles as a counselor, volunteer coordinator, and supervisor for holiday programming and

children's activities.

I am very happy and excited to be here!

PREPARING FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS

THROUGH CINEMA

Sunday, September 14

5:00 PM - 7:30 PM in the Social Hall

Woody Allen’s psychologically and theologically complex drama

Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) addresses many of the significant

themes which are found in the liturgy on Rosh Hashanah and Yom

Kippur. Through multiple story lines, the film raises challenging

questions such as, Does God reward the “righteous” and punish

the “wicked”? What motivates human beings to behave morally?

And what are the consequences if one does not engage

in teshuvah (repentance)? Following the screening of the movie,

Dr. Sharon Jedel will facilitate a discussion, with particular

emphasis on the movie’s themes that relate to the High Holidays.

Dr. Sharon Jedel is a clinical psychologist at Rush University Medical

Center and is also in private practice. After receiving her doctorate

from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, at Yeshiva University,

she completed a one-year fellowship in trauma at Weill Cornell Medical

College in NYC. More recently, she completed a post-graduate, three

year program in Adult Psychotherapy at the Chicago Institute of

Psychoanalysis. She is a very devoted fan of Woody Allen films.

Tot Shabbat (children 3 and under with a parent) 10:45 AM in the Social Hall

Children and their parents are invited to get excited about Shabbat! This is a wonderful opportunity for children to

learn basic liturgy and sing Shabbat songs in a warm and comfortable environment. Services are conducted from the

specially-designed Tot Siddur, and each child has the chance to hold and kiss a tot-sized Torah.

Gan Shabbat (JK & K) 10:45 AM in Room 206 of the JCC

This service is geared toward those who are ready to move on from Tot Shabbat, but are not yet readers. Gan

Shabbat expands on what children learned in Tot Shabbat, encouraging them to sing and participate even more on

their own. With a heavier emphasis on the Tefillah part of the service, Gan Shabbat serves as a bridge between Tot

Shabbat & Yeladeinu (and the siddur is a conglomerate of what is used in each of those series).

Drop-off is encouraged, but parents are welcome to attend.

Yeladeinu (1st -2nd grade) 10:30 AM in Room 204 of the JCC

As a child enters 1st grade, he or she is familiar enough with the Tefillah to participate in a fuller service, conducted

from the Artscroll Children’s Siddur, with its colorful pictures and easy-to-read Hebrew. Following Tefillah, children

participate in games or stories, and are encouraged to lead the congregation in Ein K’Elokeinu and Aleinu in the

main sanctuary.

Na’areinu (3rd-5th grade) 10:30 AM in the JCC Gym

As children are ready for the adult siddur, they are given a more in-depth look at the prayers. After Tefillah, they hear

Kiddush, have a snack, and participate in Parsha trivia or discussion. Children are encouraged to lead the congregation

in Anim Zemirot.

Tefillah Off the Deep End (6th -7th grade) - Not meeting this week 10:30 AM in the Beit Midrash

As part of ASBI’s B’nai Mitzvah Program, this is a chance for pre-teens to feel a sense of ownership of the Tefillah.

Participants are encouraged to attend Shacharit in the main sanctuary, and then join their peers for Mussaf and “deep”

discussions about Torah and Jewish adult life. There is a mini-kiddush for all participants at the end of the service.

Anshe Sholom B’nai Israel Congregation is indebted to Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz, a”h, for his generosity to the synagogue and to the Marovitz Scholarship Fund.

The George Kranzler Library of Judaic Classics is donated in loving memory of Mr. George Kranzler by the Kranzler and Saltzman families.
