Commitment Post 16
• Your daughter is now a student by choice• PETE not NEET
• We are very glad to have them (and you) with us for the next two years
• High performing = High expectations
• A Level only = Academic rigour
‘A Levels are now harder’
Should students be studying 4 subjects?
• Probably Not• What is the benefit of studying more than 3?
• Linear A Levels are different and harder than oldersiblings might have experienced
• Changes to options made by 20th September(tomorrow)

‘AS’ LEVEL
Sorry, but GCSEs are pretty easy – most people pass them; they are not called General certificates for nothing
You were fed ‘correct’ answers… … and led towards your target grade!
From spoon-feeding and hand-holding to losing your ‘stabilisers and choosing your own route.
A levels are not easy – many people mess them up; let’s face it, they are called Advanced level
But now you will just get a push… … and have to work out your own way!

Directed Learning (DL)
• Mornings only• Students must spend these periods studying
and they are registered by a designated member of staff
• From that point onwards, they should be spent on the school site in Year 13
• However, as long as there is work to do, students can sign in and out
This is a privilege that we reserve the right to remove if attendance and/or academic performance is deemed to be unsatisfactory
Predicted Grade Setting Day• 10 minute appointments – every Yr13 student• Wednesday 21st (this week)• Senior/experienced staff• Review of Yr12 performance (AS Legacy & A Level Linear)
• Set optimistic/aspirational Predicted Grades that are realistic
• Schools are assessed on accuracy of predictions
How much Study?• It is recommended that A Level students match
their time (hours) spent learning in the classroomwith independent work outside
• Is Independent Work the same as Homework?
• Students should be spending (at least) 4 hours per week on each A Level Subject
• A Level success will not happen by just turning up and completing tasks set by teachers
Subject Folders• Subject Folders are a student’s revision notes,
proof of progress and evidence of independentstudy
• They must be looked after, kept organised, tidy, updated and taken to every lesson
• Each Subject Folder should have;A Subject Syllabus/SpecificationA tick list to monitor progress through the aboveA section with all Assessed WorkClear evidence that study is taking place beyond lessons
Who Can Help?• Subject Staff
• If you are struggling with your subject, talk tothem first. They may be able to explain how toresolve the issue straight away
• Think about choosing a time outside of a lessonwhen you can have their undivided attention –they are very busy people, but they do want thebest for you
Who Can Help?• The Sixth Form Team
• Your Tutor, Mr Carter, Mr Waight, Mrs Boddy, Mrs Keaveney & Mrs Cooley are all available to help
• Upstairs in the Sixth Form Centre
• The door is always open!
• Tutor periods Tues to Friday. Tutors are a brilliantresource and get to know tutees very well overthe two years

Academic Monitoring• Assessment Periods with results measured
against Target Grades• SMART Targets set to improve performance• Cause for Concern Evenings where
underachievement continues• Academic Monitoring Report cards, increased
DL, compulsory Subject Clinic attendance
The Importance of Attendance
A research paper commissioned by Alps confirmed the following;
• If you compare students of equal ‘ability’ – those with attendance of over 95% perform one grade higher per subject than those with attendance of 85% or less
• Each further 10% fall reduces this by another grade
N.B. One week (5 days) away per year during term time = a 3% fall in attendance
Rosebery Sixth Form
Sickness• If students are sick - please ring in to school before
8.30am
• We must receive evidence (a phone call, note, or email) from parents/carers within 24hrs
• Go direct to Mrs Cooley, or go through Tutors
• Students must always see a member of the team to be assessed and gain permission to go home before signing out
Authorised AbsenceWe will consider authorising absences for;
• University interviews / Open Days (two per year)
• Hospital (not GP) appointments
• Final Driving Test (not lessons)
• Family reasons (not holidays)
Students must bring in a signed letter beforehand
Dressing for SuccessWe operate a smart-casual dress code and ask that students refrain
from wearing the following items:
Ripped Jeans
Strappy, Low Cut or Cropped Tops which expose midriff.
Hot Pants (with or without tights/leggings underneath!).
Students will receive a verbal warning for the first infringement andbe sent home immediately on any following cases. Please also aim tokeep hair colour in a natural shade.
