Welcome to Reinventing Space 2016

Held annually, Reinventing Space (RISpace) is a conference and exhibitiondedicated to one of the fastest growing sectors: low cost access to, andutilisation of, space.

The global economic climate is creating demand to reduce expenditure, leading to new challenges and opportunities in world space. The need tocreate dramatically reduced-cost, more responsive systems and launcherscapable of delivering to space quickly, cheaply and reliably has never beenmore vital.

RISpace brings together industry, agency, government, financiers, academia and end users for a second-to-none networking opportunity inthe low cost access arena.

The 14th Reinventing Space conference and exhibition takes placeat the Royal Society in London between Monday 24 and Thursday27 October 2016.

An extra day on Friday 28 October will include site visits.

The host country for this year's conference, the United Kingdom, has astrategy to grow its share to over 10% of the world space market by 2030– a market forecast to be worth at least £400 bn by that year.

Attending RISpace is the premier worldwide opportunity to meet theinnovators vital for the future direction of space.

The primary purpose of revenue from the Reinventing Spaceconference and exhibition is to raise funds for the mission of theBritish Interplanetary Society – initiating, promoting anddisseminating new concepts and technical information about spaceflight and astronautics. The BIS is the world’s oldest spaceadvocacy organisation.

If you are interested in sponsorship or exhibiting, the Reinventing Spaceconference and exhibition is an exceptional opportunity to increaseawareness for your business across the sector.

RISpace – the mission

The annual RISpace conference began in 2003, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and looked at 'responsivespace'. This discipline originally focused on US military needs - adapting space capabilities to changingnational security requirements.

As the conference has developed it has refocused on all aspects of low cost access to space – fromlaunchers to cubesats; from improved optics for Earth observation to ion drives for long-distancepropulsion. Technological advances drive the international space effort - civil, military and commercialspace. RISpace sessions and panels look at finding ways to work together, making things happen.

Attendees, authors and keynotes come from many different spheres:

Decision-makers from space agencies and national space programmes Space innovators and visionaries CEOs and leading executives Government, law and regulatory representatives Students and young professionals Engineers and scientists from cutting-edge companies Academics from all space disciplines Space financiers, entrepreneurs, seed funders and crowdfunders Satellite owners and satellite operators Commercial and New Space industry Leaders from military and civilian space Members of the general public with an interest in the future direction of space

RISpace 2016 returns to the Royal Society

The Royal Society in London has been the home ofBritish science since the 1600s. RISpace 2014 was heldhere as was maybe the only conference that yearwhere 98% of attendees found the venue exceededtheir expectations!

The Royal Society is a Fellowship of the world’s mosteminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academyin continuous existence. Founded in the 1660s, it is thenational academy of science in the United Kingdom. The Fellowship is drawn from all areas of science, engineering and medicine. Isaac Newton and CharlesDarwin have been past Fellows; Stephen Hawking is acurrent Fellow.

What I liked about RISpace:

“The venue was terrific. The presentations nearly all interesting, witha nice break-up of exciting announcements. The exhibition areas were full of interesting information. The reception was brilliant, including drinks on the Wednesday. ”

More testimonials at www.rispace.org/?page_id=138

The Society’s fundamental purpose, reflected in its founding Charters of the 1660s, is to recognise, promote, and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science forthe benefit of humanity. The Society has played a part in some of the most fundamental, significant, and life-changing discoveries in scientific history.

A major activity of the Society is identifying and supporting the work of outstanding scientists. Itsupports researchers through its early and senior career schemes, innovation and industry schemes. The Society’s share of the income from Reinventing Space 2016 goes towards this support.

RISpace Call For Abstracts

Highlighting the trends that will define space enterprise a decade from now

The focus of the 2016 conference will be on how technology trends are leading to the increasing commercialisation of space, including low cost launch systems, mega-constellations, and a range of novel satellite applications, both in LEO and beyond.

Following a similar structure to last year, RISpace 2016 will hold five or six sessions split overthree days. The sessions aim to cover all aspects of space commercialisation and development of this new frontier.

Papers are invited for each of the proposed conference sessions :

Near Earth Activities Papers are invited on the new services and commercial opportunities that are under-development for our Near Earth Environment. From mega-constellations that will deliver global high-speed internet to on-orbit servicing and commercial debris removal missions, commercial expansion of our Near Earth Environment has great potential over the upcoming years.

Access to Space Papers are invited on the new vehicles, technologies and operational concepts that are radically reducing the cost to reach orbit. Small launchers, reusability and commercial rideshare partnerships, all promise to open up the space frontier and will be the focus of this session.

Enabling Technologies Fundamental to a number of the new commercial opportunities are technology breakthroughs. Laser communications, cubesat propulsion, solar sails, on-board advanced data processing all promise to deliver enhance the performance of the next generation satellites.

Commercialisation and Applications As important as the technology which is driving the development of space, are the new and innovative business plans which are being adopted by new and established space companies. This session invites papers from new start-ups, companies with a bold new commercial vision and those with new market predictions/forecasts.

Beyond Earth Orbit This session will explore the plans to expand beyond Earth orbit, both for exploration and exploitation of new resources. Resources from the moon, Mars and Near Earth Asteroids all have great promise for the terrestrial economy and space propulsion, but what are the stepping stones to achieve this? Prospecting missions, commercial prizes, institutional partnerships, are all of interest.

89 abstracts were received during the 2015 Call For Abstracts period – a new record for RISpace

The Call For Abstracts closes on Friday 17 June 2016.

Reinventing Space 2016 Gala Dinner

This year’s Sir Arthur Clarke Awards will be hosted at the 14th Reinventing Space Conference on the occasion ofits Gala Dinner which will formally close RISpace. Better known as ‘The Arthurs’, they have been presented annually since 2005.

The Dinner will take place at 8pm on Thursday 27 October in the Wellcome Trust Theatre at the Royal Society.

The Arthur C. Clarke Awards. recognise and reward those individuals and teams that have made notable or outstanding achievements in, or contributions to, all space activities. Unlike many other awards, nominations can be made by the general public.

What people said they liked about RISpaceIn the previous occasion that RISpace was held at the Royal Society in 2014, our post-event survey saw 52 of the 53 respondents say that the conference met or exceeded their expectations.

We allowed further comments on the survey form and below is some of what we received.
