HONORS ENGLISH I

GRADE LEVEL: 9

PREREQUISITE: At least a “B” in 8th grade AcceleratedEnglish and proficiency of required pre-course independentreading.

Students will be expected to have a solid background in grammarand reading. At the beginning of the term, students will be tested onone novel which will be required independent summer reading.Exhibition of proficiency on this test will be mandatory to remainenrolled in the course. The genres of literature will be introducedand developed with emphasis on poetry, short stories, and thenovel. Writing practice will also be an integral part of the course.Essay writing instruction will focus on constructed responsetechniques.

• The GPA is based on a four-point scale with

internal weighting only (3 points on the final

numerical grade for an honors course and 5 points

on the final numerical grade for an Advanced

Placement course).

G.P.A. Means “grade point average”

ALL courses that you take in HS count toward your final

G.P.A. on a 4-point scale

An “A” is worth 4 points

A “B” is worth 3 points

A “C” is worth 2 points

A “D” is worth 1 point

An “F” is worth 0 points

Honors classes are internally weighted (+3 added to final

average), so a 4.0 is the highest that you can achieve in any

class.

RTI: Response to Intervention

Beginning in 2016-17, high schools will

incorporate RTI into the schedule for

freshmen and sophomores in an effort to

move the students to grade level for math and

reading. We will get a list of Tier II/III

students from each middle school and will

continue to help the students work on

remediation and basic skills.
