Pastor’s Corner

The Lord’s invitation for us in this 2nd Sunday of Advent is to prepare the way for His coming. Jesus the Messiah and Lord will surely come and will not delay. This invitation of repentance is so urgent and must not be ignored by all because His arrival is so imminent. Apostle Peter reminds us “do not ignore this fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and thousands of years is like one day” (2 Peter 3:8).

Blessing of a Christmas Manger or

Nativity Scene

In its present form the custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas crèche or manger for Christmas Eve of 1223.

The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene may take place on the Vigilof Christmas or at another suitable time.

We Welcome All Visitors to Our CelebrationWhile Holy Communion may only be received by prepared Catholics, for our non-Catholic guests you are welcome to join the line to walk towards the priest or deacon to receive a special blessing: Simply cross your arms over your chest to receive a blessing.

Retirement Fund for ReligiousSpecial Collection this Weekend

December 9-10, 2017Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have spent their lives ministering to others, often for little, if any, pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and health care. Your gift to the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious supports the day-to-day care of roughly 35,000 senior religious, providing necessities such as prescription medications and nursing care. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.

Christmas FlowersIn this month’s envelopes you will find a Christmas Flower envelope. Any amount is appreciated to help defer the cost of flowers. For a $15 donation, you may honor a loved one, living or deceased, with a poinsettia on the altar. Additional envelopes are located in the rear of church. Thank you.

Fr. Louis’ 60th Anniversary Ordination

Celebration!

Sunday, December 10, at 1:00 PM

Come celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Fr. Louis’ ordination in the lower hall after the 12:00 PM Mass. A light lunch will be provided along with a fantastic chocolate cake! If you would like to give Fr. Louis a gift, he would appreciate your continued prayers. If you are called to be even more generous, he would love a gift card to Costco, Walmart, or Target.

Stock DonationsA gift of your securities, including stocks or mutual funds, is an easy way to make a gift. By making a gift of your appreciated securities, you can avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be due if you sold these assets. Contributions are deductible for tax purposes. There are no transaction fees or other costs and the full value of the sold securities benefits the parish, school or other Catholic charity you select. More importantly, the question you may want to consider is this: Have I been blessed with many gifts and am I inspired by Gospel teaching and my Catholic values that charitable giving is a profound and joy-inspiring expression of love and gratitude? How can I live out my Catholic values and put them into action for the greater good of the community? Your stock contribution will help you live out your Catholic values and benefit your parish or school at the same time. For more information on making a gift please visit our diocesan website at www.sdcatholic.org and click on Giving – Stock Donations at the top of the website. Or, you may contact the Office for Stewardship, Manny Aguilar, at 858-490-8294 or call Merrill Lynch, the Diocese’s broker, at 800-844-0720.

Please, Come to Church Dressed Appropriately! To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantily clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty. Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
