Happy Parish Feast Day! Though not on the universal calendar of the Church, the feast day of Saint Alexis is July 17. The celebration of a feast day may be transferred to a Sunday during the liturgical season of Ordinary Time.

Therefore, next weekend, July 20 and 21, we will honor the memory Saint Alexis at all the Masses so that more people may participate in this tribute to our patron. A little background information about our Saint Alexis: Alexis, a fifth century Roman citizen, was the son of a wealthy Roman senator. Alexis chose to live a life of poverty and settled in a hut adjoining a church in Edessa. He is said to have returned to his father’s house. So physically changed by his life of poverty, his family did not recognize him. He was taken in by them and permitted to live in a corner under the steps leading up to the house. Unrecognized and ill-treated by servants of the house, Alexis remained there for 17 years. It was only after his death that Alexis was recognized as the senator’s son and his identity fully revealed. Saint Alexis is the patron saint of beggars and is an inspirational example of humility. He sought every opportunity to humble himself before others. We are blessed to have this humble, loving, servant of God as our parish patron. What a mighty witness and intercessor! Learn more about St. Alexis and befriend him by your prayers.

The Annual Saint Alexis Festival Days runs from July 31 thru August 3. We are in need of volunteers to help with staffing this year’s celebration. Any gift of time given for one or all four nights will be most greatly appreciated. Please refer to the information regarding the festival on

A Prayer To Saint Alexis

I give thanks to You, heavenly Father, for protecting me through the night

and granting me another day. I ask You to fortify me with the grace of Your Holy

Spirit, and give Your peace to my soul, that I may be free from all needless anxiety and worry.

Help me to desire always that which is pleasing and acceptable to You, so that Your will may be my will. Today, make known to me, and take from my heart,

every kind, form and degree of pride. Today, empty me of self, and awaken in me the deepest

depth and truth of that humility which can make me capable of your revealing light.

Today, do not allow attribution to me, for the good that you perform in me and through me, but rather, that all honor be to you.

Today, may your presence in me, and your work through me, testify of your holiness and saving grace.

Help me to die to self each day, and continuously seek your glorification in all that I think or do.

This I ask in the name of Jesus Christ, the exemplar of humility.

GENTLY USED CLOTHING SALE August 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the small gym at Saint Alphonsus. This sale benefits the Passion Play. Collection of clothing is being accepted at the doors of the small gym, Wednesday July 24 through Sunday, August 4. We accept clothing, shoes, jewelry, belts for men, women, teens, and children. What is your Mission Statement for Life? By Dave VanVickle, Director for Evangelization Seems like everyone is talking about mission statements these days. Corporations are sharing them both with employees and customers. Non-profits use them for marketing and fundraising. They are supposed to be pithy statements that help us to focus on core purposes and I think they work well. The question is what is your mission statement? Have you asked yourself those important questions just like the big corporations do? “What is my purpose?” “Who do I serve?” “What makes me successful?” In this day and age when we are being pulled in a million different directions and are asked to make a million different decisions some clarity and focus can be so incredibly important. I thought a lot about this last year. My wife and I decided it was time to put our oldest son into school. My wife had homeschooled him up until fourth grade. I wanted to make sure that while we would no longer be the only influences in his that he remembered our core values and focus. Each morning as I dropped him off for school I would say to him, “Remember the only thing that really matters is that you go to heaven and bring as many people possible with you.” I am sure it drove him crazy to hear over and over again but it’s a paradigm by which we can live our life. It is simple and important. It is an easy way that he can understand the decisions we make in our life and why we might live a little differently than other. So what is your core value? What is your mission statement? How do you make your daily decisions? It might be time to pray and think about this so that you can gain clarity and prioritize the things in your life. Once you have done this you might want to take another close look at the Gospels and make sure that your mission lines up with the plan God has for your life. We know the plan is “Be holy, as your heavenly Father is holy.” So how will you personally be holy in your own unique way? The answer to that is your mission statement. In the meantime feel free to borrow our family’s mission statement: “Go to heaven and bring as many people possible with you.”

JULY GOLD CLUB GATHERING FOR MASS AND LUNCH Please join the Gold Club on Friday, July 19 for the Noon Mass at St. Alphonsus Church. It is the anniversary of the dedication of St. Alphonsus Church in 1840. Lunch at Panera Wexford for food and fellowship will follow after the Mass. Thank you to all who came on June 28 for Mass, celebrated by Fr. Zywan, and who joined us afterward for lunch, including Fr. Joe.

Men's Fellowship Update By Joe Grennan - June 17 Meeting On June 17, the Men's Fellowship examined the topic of "Habits and the Virtuous Life" for which we reviewed a series of readings from Scripture, including the memorable line from the Book of Sirach: “Do not become a glutton and a drunkard with nothing in your purse.” Although the word "habit" generally has a negative connotation, the Catechism defines a "virtue" as a habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It was noted that the concept of human virtue preceded Christianity; it was previously articulated by Aristotle and further discussed by the Stoic philosophers. The human soul should be structured with the intellect, embracing the virtues, guiding the will which, in turn, moderates the emotions.

The group considered the "cardinal virtues: Prudence is the " char ioteer of the vir tues" because of its key role in guiding the others. Not to be confused

with timidity or fear, prudence allows one to discern the true good in a given circumstance (remember your response the last time someone cut you off on the Parkway North.)

Justice is the constant and firm will (or " habit" ) of giving one's due to God and neighbor . We cannot improve on Moses (from Leviticus: “Y ou shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor”).

Fortitude, often neglected in contemporary society, is the vir tue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in pursuit of the good. "True grit,” if you will.

Temperance got a lot of press in the Old Testament (Do not follow your base desires but restrain your appetites, Sirach) and prompted much discussion among the group. It was realized that this virtue applies not just to alcohol, but too many aspects of life (internet, TV, work, etc.)

We also reviewed the Seven Deadly Sins contrasting each with the antidote human virtue, e.g., lust/chastity, pride/humility, envy/admiration, anger/forgiveness, sloth/zeal, avarice/generosity, and gluttony/mortification.

The next meeting on Protestant Brothers is scheduled for Monday, July 15 at 6:00 p.m.at the Blessed Seelos School cafeteria. Hope to see you there!

Flag Collection & Retirement Eight councils in our two districts are participating in this Flag Retirement project. The Flag Retirement ceremony will take place 6:00 p.m. Wednesday July 24 in front of Wexford Volunteer Fire Company, (228 North Chapel Drive). The

BAPTISM

Celebrated on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. at Saint Alexis or at 12:45 p.m. at Saint Alphonsus by appointment. Arrangements should be made through the Parish Center several months in advance. Parents need to be registered parishioners and complete a pre-baptism class before scheduling a baptism.

MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND

Communal anointing is celebrated periodically. Anyone who is anticipating surgery is encouraged to request this sacrament prior to being admitted to the hospital. Individuals who are unable to attend Sunday Mass and want to receive the sacraments are asked to please call the Parish Center.
