Changing Agendas: shifting broadband futures Every year we bring together leaders from the front line of the battle for better broadband. This year is no exception but we also celebrate progress by lifting the agenda from ‘enabling connectivity’ to include ‘enabling the outcomes of connectivity’. The entire point of building better broadband connectivity is to enable change in the way we all work, live and interact. There may still be a long way to go to ensure that the entire UK is fully up to speed but now far more people understand the wider benefits of investing in ‘fit for purpose’ digital infrastructures. At NextGen 13 you can look forward to the future (with Rohit Talwar), the experiences of Intelligent Communities around the world (with Robert Bell), the latest technology innovations (from many exhibitors) insights into new markets (especially in the property sector), latest insights in what the Internet is used for (with Professor William Dutton) and updates on the challenges facing community leaders and Local Authorities as they grapple with local economic drivers. We are here in Wembley to celebrate the impacts of better broadband - for local government, for entertainment, for living and for business. And at the conference dinner, we will celebrate the winners of this year’s Next Generation Digital Chal- lenge Awards. A warm welcome to all our delegates and many thanks to all our sponsors, speakers, partners and exhibitors who have made this event possible. The entire point of building better broadband connectivity is to enable change in the way we all work, live and interact. There may still be a long way to go to ensure that the entire UK is fully up to speed but now far more people understand the wider benefits of investing in ‘fit for purpose’ digital infrastructures.

We are here in Wembley to celebrate the impacts of better broadband - for local government, for entertainment, for living and for business. And at the conference dinner, we will celebrate the winners of this year’s Next Generation Digital Chal-lenge Awards.

A warm welcome to all our delegates and many thanks to all our sponsors, speakers, partners and exhibitors who have made this event possible.

Optical LAN Solutions - Passive Optical Network (PON) Applied to the Enterprise by Zhone and TE Connectivity

Passive Optical Networks have been successfully proven with many Fibre to the Home (FTTH) projects around the world. Today’s Local Area (LAN) Networks take advantage of similar PON-based approaches founded on single-mode fibre supporting high bandwidth over long-distances with lower CAPEX and OPEX. PON reduces the time and complexity of deploying office IT networks. This presentation provides a broad view of PON technology a strategic approach to Layer 1 and 2 design and a review of the expertise required as optical networking across the LAN environments evolves. Luca Rozzoni - EMEA Business Development Manager for Office LAN at TE Connectivity

Next Generation Satellite Broadband - complimenting broadband demand and accelerating take-up to support the universal service vision by Avonline

To drive the most commercial expansion of super fast broadband into the last 10% of the UK, demand stimulation is a key factor. Delivering fast broadband into 100% of the rural population today, Ka satellite broadband technology, has a key role to play. With current Rural Broadband programmes taking 3-5 years to complete, many potential beneficiaries will still be awaiting an upgrade in 2017. Creative and commercial use of satellite broadband offers immediate benefits, improved local economies and more efficient public sector services delivery. Mark Wynn - Managing Director Avonline plc

More Bang for your Buck - Lowering fibre deployment costs by Stirling Lloyd

FTTX deployment is a major undertaking and inevitably cost is a major issue. The initial UK focus has been on fibre to the cabinet in order to reach as many properties as possible at the lowest cost. As the roll out continues, the cost per property will increase but if digging and ducting costs can be reduced more properties can be reached economically. We will present micro-trenching techniques for duct installation in highways, showing how it reduces costs and increases fibre deployment speed – delivering more bang for your buck. Mike Harper - Development Director Stirling Lloyd
