As we bring our 50th Anniversary to a close with the end of 2017, thanks to everyone who participated in our pledge drive, our Habitat for Newmanity clean up events, and our Sept. 30th Anniversary Mass & Celebration. After 50 years, Newman is still alive and vibrant. We did not make our ambitious goal of $125,000, but we did raise a decent amount to

do some major building upgrades. It is still never too late to give to the 50th Anniversary Fund because we have lots more to do with our aging building. Newman would be a worthy charity to give before the new tax bill goes into effect.

UNDECORATING CHRISTMAS- Your help is invited next Saturday morning, January 13 from 9am, to “un-decorate Christmas”. Help is especially needed in packing away our lovely new tree, as well as putting away the crèche, and other decorations, and returning the plants to the Chapel. Thank you. -Colleen Lenord.

WOMEN IN CONVERSATION-Saturday, January 13, 9:00am to 12:00Noon. Sr. Maureen Duignan, Executive Director of East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, will be speaking about what it’s like to live in our country as a refugee. She will also tell us how refugees are assisted through this organization, which provides sanctuary, advocacy and legal services to people escaping war, terror, political persecution and other expressions of violence. EBSC staff and a refugee will join Sr. Maureen. Come, bring a friend, a cup and a snack to share. For more info, contact Susan Grant at [email protected] or Peg Bogle at [email protected].

THE BUSY PERSON’S RETREAT-Feb 11-March 2, 2018. Taking part in the Busy Person’s Retreat you will commit to a serious daily prayer time and meet each week with a spiritual director, for the three week retreat. There is no cost for this retreat. Look for more info and sign-ups in January. Any questions? Call Roberta Gannon at 510-601-6805.

As we bring 2017 to a close, we cannot leave the year without a moment of deep gratitude. The blessings of the year would be amiss if we fail to wrap them and preserve them in the warm embrace of gratitude. It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a

community to cultivate a parish. Thanks to everyone who has joined us in celebration at Mass or other sacraments or any of our multitudes of events. Every day, something is happening at Newman. There is always found laughter or music, silent reflection or songful prayer, quiet meditation or deep conversations. The Spirit of God is alive here because of the people of God. Thanks to our choir and musicians throughout the year, Sunday after Sunday providing music to praise God and lift up our spirits. Thanks to the Chapel Cleaners who keep out chapel so clean and the Sacristans who set up and clean up after Mass. Thanks to our Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers who help proclaim the Word and serve the Table. Thanks to our Children’s catechists and RCIA Dismissal Catechists who help break open the Word for our children and RCIA catechumens. Special thanks for volunteers who made our Christmas celebrations so powerful. Thanks to the 16 folks who came on a Saturday morning to decorate, especially putting together a 15’ tree and untangling stars. Thanks to the choir members who put in all the extra time to provide music throughout our Christmas Masses. Thanks to all the ministry group leaders who week after week minister to the parishioners in their groups. We have too many groups to list here, but look at the blue Directory of Groups and Activities to see how amazingly abundant our parish is. For those of you who mistakenly think Newman only supports students, look at all the bold entries of ministry beyond students. Thanks to our paid support staff that keep Newman a welcoming place – Max, Christine, Elizabeth, Peg, Claire and a number of receptionists. Thanks to our ministerial staff – Colleen, Frances, Grace, Fr. Paul, Fr. Steve, Fr. George, FOCUS Missionaries, Student Ministers, – who provide extraordinary leadership to make Newman alive with ministry. And above all thanks to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom we serve, whom we adore, whom we love. The reason for all seasons is Christ – Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Fr. Ivan
