A Quick Geography A Quick Geography LessonLesson
Mullin became a town with the construction of the Santa Fe railroad through the area in the late 1880s. The town was named after the Charles Mullin family who settled here in the late 1850’s. Life in this area was difficult. Mob violence and Native American raids kept life unpredictable. Among the first businesses in the area were a saloon and a hotel in 1885. Dr. W. D. Kirkpatrick donated the land for the town in return for the construction of the railroad through the area. The population of Mullin was 100 in 1890; in 1894 the first permanent schoolhouse was built. A gristmill and cotton gin were among the early businesses. By 1910 the town had three churches, a bank, a weekly newspaper named the Enterprise, and 750 residents.

A Walking Tour of Mullin, TXA Walking Tour of Mullin, TX
We would like to show you around our town…our very small town. In fact, our population is only 175, and we only cover ½ mi². We can quickly and easily walk wherever we need to go. Most people drive through Mullin and never pay it much attention. Some people might even call it a “ghost town,” but there is more to Mullin than meets the eye.
We have several churches, a few businesses, a post office, a café, a grocery store, an automotive garage, and a school. Only the main highways are paved, the rest are dirt roads. Come walk with us as we show you our town.
First, we will show you a few of the businesses we have along the main highway.
This is the Mullin Trading Post & Tire Shop. Our Baptist minister owns it. If you have a flat, he’ll fix it.
This is the Mullin Station. They don’t sell gasoline anymore, but they will repair your vehicle.
Here’s the Vintage Oak furniture shop. Inside you will find beautifully hand-crafted wooden furniture.
This is the Mullin Rock Yard. They sell rock to construct buildings withn. Here is the Highway 84 Café. If
you’re hungry, this is the place to go.
Many years ago, downtown Mullin was a busy place with hotels and shops of all kinds. Today, there are only two businesses downtown.
This is Downtown Grocery. We call it Larry’s Store because it belongs to Larry, our mayor. The building was built in the 1890’s and was the first non-wooden structure downtown. It has been a dry goods store and a movie theater in the past.
Here we are at Shelton Lumber. Here you can buy basic hardware and wood to build with.
Mullin Churches
Even though we are a very small community, we do have three churches.
The First Baptist Church of Mullin is our largest church. This is the Mullin
Church of Christ.
The First Methodist church is one of the oldest buildings in town. It’s actually a historical landmark. It was built in 1920.
Mullin Landmarks
Here we are at the U.S. Post Office.
Many years ago, this was the bank. Today it is the Community Center.
Since everyone drinks well-water, it’s not surprising to find this windmill is right downtown.
This used to be a garage, but we call it the “graveyard.” See all the old cars? This is the Pecan
Bayou. We go fishing and swimming here.
Here’s a nice old-fashioned house.
What to do in Mullin, TexasAlthough we don’t have movie theaters and shopping malls in Mullin, we can travel to nearby towns for recreation. We always find something to do in our free time. Of course, we do have the Mullin Rodeo every summer!

Two library clubs are sponsored by the Mullin School Library. They were formed to encourage a love for reading and the appreciation of libraries and their resources. The club members establish reading goals, meet periodically, and take an annual trip to one or more major libraries.
Student government is designed to create cooperation between students and administration, to promote citizenship and democracy, to create school pride and loyalty, and to allow students to express themselves.
The purpose of the National Beta Club is to promote the ideals of character, service, and leadership, to reward meritorious achievement and to encourage and assist students in continuing their education after high school.
