What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of the Reception year. It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning.

Page 13: Welcome to Meet the Teacher Reception

Characteristics of Effective

Teaching & Learning• These focus on how children learn rather than what they

learn.

• Playing and exploring – Children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.

• Active learning – Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.

• Creating and thinking critically – Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

Focus Children

You will have two parent consultations appointments over the school year.

Over the course of the year your child will have two focus weeks.

We shall send home with your child a sheet asking you to complete it detailing your child’s favourite activities outside school.

This supports us with planning exciting activities which will engage your child in the learning.

Children learn better when the learning is centred around something that interests them and open-ended lines of enquiry develop as a result of this.
