Not just a scenically attractive area but one within easy reach of Scotland’s central belt, this area has been welcoming visitors for generations. Yet quiet and out of the way unspoilt places are still easy to find.

Loch Lomond Gateway Centre - National ParkBalloch is the southern gateway to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. The Loch Lomond Shores complex includes a good choice of shops as well as an aquarium. Gateway Centre has information on the area’s wildlife, heritage, walks and recreation.

Loch Lomond in Close-upWalk at least part of the long-distance footpath, the West Highland Way. Alternatively, cruises start from a variety of places on the loch, including Balmaha and Balloch. Cyclists can enjoy the West Loch Lomond Cycle Path, a level route from Balloch for 17 miles / 27km to Tarbet.

Helensburgh - ‘a Museum of Villas’Helensburgh is a planned town, laid out in the 18th century. Many well-to-do Glasgow business folk built properties here, earning the town its description as ‘a museum of villas’, the most famous being Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House of 1904, which is open to view.

Bute - a Clyde Cruise FavouriteBute Museum by Rothesay Castle tells the story of tourism on the island of Bute and the great days of the Clyde steamers. This traditional resort still has many echoes of summer holidays of old when the urban population of the west went ‘doon the watter’. The extraordinary building of Mount Stuart attracts many to see one of the finest examples of domestic architecture from Britain’s 19th-century Gothic revival.

How to use this folderThis folder is full of information on the best places to visit in this area. We hope that it will help you make the most of your time here. For information on attractions further afield, have a look at the national map and ‘Things to See and Do in the Rest of Scotland’ listing at the centre of this folder. This is followed by leaflets on other attractions, many of which may be within easy reach of where you are staying.

Dunoon - Gateway to CowalDunoon is another traditional resort. It is a gateway to the Cowal hinterland and the West Highlands beyond. Dunoon annually plays host to the Cowal Highland Gathering, the largest of its kind in the world - when more than 150 pipe bands march through the town’s streets. Nearby is the Benmore Botanic Garden, with a wide-ranging collection including a spectacular avenue of giant redwood trees.

Cowal CountrysideThe Argyll Forest Park embraces the northern portion of Cowal and offers plenty of off-road cycling and walking. The most famous landmark is the peak known as the Cobbler, with its unmistakable profile. At the southern end of Cowal, the Kyles of Bute is simply one of the most pleasingly scenic areas in Scotland and well worth the drive down from Loch Fyne.

WalkingAside from Rothesay, much of Bute is very rural and tranquil. There is a fine selection of walks,

including the signposted ‘West Island Way’. Cowal, too, has routes for walkers, including the Cowal Way, a 47 mile / 75 km footpath running the length of the peninsula linking Portavadie with Ardgartan.

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

Explore a world of plants

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, founded in 1670, is a world renowned centre for plant research, conservation and education. Its four remarkable Gardens – the “Botanics” in Edinburgh; the mountain-side Benmore in Argyll; Dawyck in the wooded hills of the Scottish Borders; and Logan on a Gulf Stream warmed peninsula in Galloway – differ in topography, soils and climate, enabling an exceptionally wide range of plants to be grown. Together they constitute one of the richest plant collections on Earth, with more that 15,000 species in cultivation.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored and supported through Grant-in-Aid by the Scottish Government’s Environment and Forestry Directorate (ENFOR).

What our visitors say*

Visit one of the best-preserved Jail and Courtroom buildings in the world. See how real trials were conducted in Argyll’s County Court, hear echoes of the past as you walk through the prison cells and find out what life was like for the men, women and children - some as young as seven - who were tried and locked up all those years ago.

THE JOURNEYFort William to Mallaig

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting at the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan.

Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.

The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.

FORT WILLIAM TO MALLAIG

HOW TO GET TO FORT WILLIAM...

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.
