THE LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT IS THE SECOND LARGEST DISTRICT IN THE NATION.
LAUSD covers 710 square miles. In addition to the city of Los Angeles, the District serves other cities and several unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
LAUSD is divided into eight Local Districts. The local Districts span from the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro.

Aside from offering the highest quality education to elementary, middle, and senior high school students, LAUSD provides comprehensive programs for our special needs students and numerous learning opportunities and employment training for adults.

LAUSD OPERATES OVER 1,200 SCHOOLS AND CENTERS.
In the spotlight is LAUSD’s $20.1 billion New Construction and Modernization Program, which is the largest school construction program in the nation’s history. By 2012, the program will have completed 131 new schools.

WHO’s WHO AT LAUSD
Dr. John Deasy is the Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School
District, the nation’s second largest school district. In this role, Dr. Deasy
oversees all aspects of the education program and all of the administrative
procedures within the District.
Prior to joining LAUSD, Dr. Deasy had a long career in the field of
education. He served as the Superintendent at both the Santa Monica-
Malibu Unified School District as well as the Prince George’s County,
Maryland, Public Schools. Most recently, Dr. Deasy served as Deputy
Director of Education for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Dr. Deasy has dedicated his career to educational reform where all
students have the chance to succeed.

Los Angeles Unified School District is governed by a seven-member
Board of Education, which appoints a superintendent, who runs the daily
operations of the District. Members of the board are elected directly by
voters from separate districts that encompass communities that the
LAUSD serves.

THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE
“Classified” positions are non-teaching positions, ones that
do not require a teaching credential. Positions like food
service workers, bus drivers, and secretaries are all examples
of "classified jobs." Employees in these jobs support the
business of education.

Transportation Division
Highlights of LAUSD’s Business Divisions
The Transportation Division supports schools and
instructional programs by transporting over 52,800
students on 1,840+ bus routes during the school year
calendar. The Division boasts an On-Time Performance
Record of 99.475! Additionally, the Division operates five
major garage facilities which service approximately 3,200
buses, trucks, autos, and vans.
Facilities Services Division
The Facilities Services Division provides services in the
areas of new construction, maintenance of existing
facilities & grounds, real estate management, and school
utilization. The Division serves over 1,100 schools. In
the spotlight is LAUSD’s $20.1 billion New Construction &

program in the nation’s history.

Information Technology Division
The Information Technology Division supports LAUSD by
delivering services including Educational Technology;
Data Systems Operations/Security; Business and School
Data Management; Infrastructure Support; Tele-
communications Services; eMail Services; Enterprise
Resources Planning System/SAP support; and IT
Customer Support.
School Police Department
The Los Angeles School Police Department serves as
both a fully functioning professional law enforcement
agency and an active partner within the greater LAUSD
community of students, parents, educators, staff,
neighboring cities and counties. Established in 1948, the
LASPD is proud to be one of the leading and the largest
school district police department in the nation.

Highlights of LAUSD’s Business Divisions
Risk Management and Insurance Services Division
The Risk Management and Insurance Services Division
focuses in three areas: Benefits Administration - the
administration of our insurance and retirements plans;
Insurance/Risk Finance - protecting the District’s assets;
and Integrated Disability Management - employee
absence and disability management, and industrial injury
related functions.
Food Services Division
The Food Services Division takes great pride in operating
the nation's largest School Breakfast Program and the
second largest National School Lunch Program. The
Division serves approximately 650,000 nutritious and
healthy students meals each day. Our menus exceed
USDA nutritional standards, which includes meals with
no added trans fat, reduced sodium, and whole grain.

The Personnel Commission
“achieving excellence through merit”
The Personnel Commission is an autonomous department that provides human resources services for the Classified Service of LAUSD. Its main purpose is to ensure that classified employees are selected for employment and promotion on the basis of their job related skills and preparation.
The Personnel Commission also provides staff development/training services to classified employees to ensure the efficiency of the classified service and acts as an impartial body to adjudicate employee appeals of personnel actions.
The Personnel Commission’s goal is to be a valued partner with the schools, instructional programs and operations of the District to build personnel capacity that supports the overall mission of the District. The Personnel Commission will also have an continuing role in your LAUSD career.

The new employee “on-boarding” period lasts longer than a
few days. For this reason, we are including checklists that
will guide you in your pre-arrival, and during your first few
weeks, six months, and first year on the job. We encourage
you to use this tool to achieve your career goals in the
District.
Additionally, the orientation period requires dedicated
focus on your part as the new employee, so partner with
your supervisor. Take initiative when possible, approach
key team members for help, and ask your supervisor for
feedback along the way.

You will need to attend an on-boarding/pre-hire processing appointment before you can begin working. This is a personal appointment for you to visit an Employment Office to complete all of your new-employee documents & fingerprinting.
Your appointment will either be made by someone in our Employment Transaction Services Branch (if you were hired off of an employment eligibility list) or by a school site administrator (if you were you hired directly by a school site). You will be able to begin working once your fingerprints clear. Someone from our Employment Transaction Services Branch will contact you to notify you of your first day of work.

First Few Weeks
• Get Situated – get to know your workplace & your co-workers.
• Sign up for our one day New Employee Orientation presented by our Training Department.
• Sign up for your benefits package.
• Gain access to your site, your computer systems, and phone system.
• Review relevant rules and procedures.
• Learn your job and what is expected of you.
Your first days on the job can be simultaneously exciting and overwhelming, so partner with your supervisor to get situated in your new job.
Ask your supervisor for an orientation packet, new employee checklists, and any important documents that will help guide you in your first weeks on the job. Documents such as the new employee handbook, District Calendars, District Fingertip Facts, District and
Department organization charts, and access to District and Department policies will be very helpful as you
begin your new job.

Tips for Your First Few Weeks
• Here are some steps to help you get situated in your new job:
– Arrive safely and on time. Be sure that you know your work schedule and ask your supervisor how you will be required to document your time.
– Dress Appropriately. This is the time to make a great first impression.
– Introductions. Meet your fellow team members and key personnel that you will be interacting with on a regular basis.
– Tours. Request a tour of the entire worksite so that you learn more about your environment.
– Settle In. Once you meet your fellow team members and tour your worksite, you will most likely be shown your desk/workstation so be sure you have proper supplies.

Introduction to the District’s Computer Resources
Business Tools for Schools:
The Business Tools for Schools (BTS) system is our integrated
enterprise resource system that includes our financial, payroll,
human resources, and applicant management systems.
Integrated Student Information Systems:
ISIS, or the Integrated Student Information System, is a centralized,
secure database for tracking and maintaining real-time student
data. Completely web-based, ISIS integrates our student
information systems into one system.

Outlook Exchange:
The District Outlook Exchange system is provided to employees in
order from them to manage their email. The system also includes a
calendar, task manager, contact manager and other features for
employees to use.

the place employees can get the latest news, announcements and
resources.

In order for the new employee orientation period to be successful your supervisor needs to clearly define your role and any expectations for your performance.
However, success also requires dedicated focus on your part, so partner with your supervisor. Ask questions to clarify aspects of your new job. Getting key information early will help you succeed more easily. During your first few months, be sure to review and discuss your class description with your supervisor,
determine reporting relationships, identify experts in your department who can assist you when necessary,
and discuss the probationary period, expectations you are to meet during that time, and timeline for
passing your probation.

First Year
•Receive formal feedback about your performance.
•Identify projects to sharpen your skills.
•Explore promotional opportunities.
You should be sure that your supervisor provides you with a probationary review meeting during which time she or he will provide you with detailed feedback on your performance. Be sure your supervisor: Identifies any performance areas that require further development or remediation. Identifies your successes and achievements. Discusses training interests and needs. Clarifies the departmental needs and mutually sets goals with you for the next review period. Discusses job goals and dates for milestones.
Keep in mind that you are not considered a permanent LAUSD employee until you pass the probationary period (typically 130 days worked or 6 months).

YOUR SALARY
• Each position within a job classification has an associated salary range.
• Typically the salary range consists of five step advances, although some have more than five, and some have as little as one.
• Usually you are placed on the first step of the salary range and you will then advance in salary steps until you reach the maximum. You will advance to the next salary step after being paid for 130 days. Subsequent salary increases occur annually.

Positions are assigned to different “bases” which determine the number of assigned days you will work and get paid within the year.
• A basis employees work 260 days/yr
• E basis employees work 234 days/yr
• B basis employees work 221 days/yr
• C basis employees work 204 days/yr
• There are also different calendars (work days vs. days off) for these bases.

• For most employees, the pay period is a month long, although some employees in cafeteria,
custodial, gardening, bus driving, and maintenance classes are paid every two weeks. • You will get paid at the end of every month, unless the end of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, then you will be paid on the preceding business day.

ETHICS POLICY STATEMENT AND CODE OF ETHICS
Our Code of Ethics helps develop trust by describing what the public can expect from us, and what we can expect from each other and our District. It plays a central role in our District’s commitment to help District personnel achieve the highest ethical standards in their professional activities and relationships. Our goal is to create a culture that fosters trust, commitment to excellence and responsibility, personal and institutional integrity, and avoids conflicts of interest and appearances of impropriety. EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION PREVENTION

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION POLICY

WORKERS COMPENSATION RIGHTS
Employees may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits if they are injured or become ill because of their job. Workers compensation benefits include medical care, temporary disability, permanent disability, supplemental job displacement voucher, and death benefits. Read about Workers Compensation Rights.
DRUG, ALCOHOL, AND TOBACCO FREE WORKPLACE
It is the policy of the District to maintain a drug and alcohol-free environment. As a condition of employment with the Los Angeles Unified School District, you must remain drug and alcohol free in the workplace during your course of employment. KEY POLICIES
CHILD ABUSE/ NEGLECT REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
It is the policy of the Los Angeles Unified School District (District) that all District employees shall report instances of suspected child abuse or neglect by telephone immediately, or as soon as practically possible, to an appropriate child protective agency and shall prepare and send a written report thereof to the same child protective agency called within 36 hours of receiving the information concerning the incident. CODE OF CONDUCT WITH STUDENTS
One of the most important responsibilities of LAUSD is the safety of our students. All employees, as well as individuals who work with or have contact with students, are reminded that they must be mindful of the fine line drawn between being sensitive to and supportive of students and a possible or perceived breach of responsible, ethical behavior. Read our Code of Conduct with Students Policy.
NEPOTISM POLICY
The purpose of this Rule is to prevent close relatives or cohabitants from working in the same organizational unit. For the purpose of this Rule, “close relatives” is defined as spouse, brother, sister, parent, child, or grandchild; “cohabitants” is defined as persons living together.. Read our Nepotism Policy.

EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT
Tuition Reimbursement
Permanent classified employees may be eligible to receive tuition reimbursement for satisfactory completion of approved training to improve their job knowledge, skill, or ability. The request for reimbursement must be approved in advance by the supervisor. Necessary forms are available through the Workforce Management Classified Training Branch:
