COURSE SELECTION PROCESS

High school counselors gave presentations to the 8th grade classes at Boston, Kesling, and St. Johns last week

The counseling staff will return to these schools and assist students with their final course selections

HOW MANY CHOICES ARE THERE?

8TH grade students have to decide on 15 course selections for their freshman year

These selections can come from 38 different courses offered to 9th grade students

NEW GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The State of Indiana has adopted four diploma types for students entering the 9th grade A general diploma remainsThe CORE 40 diploma becomes the default diploma for La Porte High School StudentsA newly defined Core 40 with Academic Honors diploma is availableA newly defined Core 40 with Technical Honors diploma is also available

The Core 40 Diploma48 credits are required for graduation (one credit for each trimester course earning a passing grade) and must come from the following areas:Language Arts 8 creditsSocial Studies 6 creditsMathematics 6 creditsScience 6 creditsHealth and Wellness 1 creditPhysical Education 2 creditsDirected Electives 5 creditsGeneral Electives 14 credits

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS REQUIREMENTS

8 Credits from a combination of literature, composition, and speech

It is required that students pass a speech course

Social Studies Requirements

2 credits in United States History

1 credit in United States Government

1 credit in Economics

2 credits from World History/Civilization or Geography/History of the World

2 credits in World History/Civilization OR

2 credits in Geography/History of the World

Mathematics Requirements

Algebra I, Geometry, & Algebra II

Students are required to take a math or physics course during their junior of senior year.

Science Requirements

2 credits in Biology

2 credits in chemistry, physics, or integrated chemistry-physics

2 additional credits in Core 40 science courses

Directed Elective Requirements

The 5 credits must come from:World Languages

Fine Arts

Career-technical

Core 40 with Academic Honors Additional Requirements

Earn 2 additional Core 40 math credits andEarn 6-8 Core 40 world language credits, andEarn 2 Core 40 fine arts credits, andEarn a grade of “C” or above in courses that will count toward the diploma, andHave a grade point average of “B” or above, andComplete one of the following:

Two Advanced Placement courses and corresponding AP examsAcademic, transferable dual high school/college courses resulting in 6 college creditsOne Advanced Placement course and corresponding AP exam and academic transferable dual high school/college course(s) resulting in 3 college creditsScore 1200 or higher combined SAT math and verbalScore a 26 composite ACT score

Core 40 with Technical Honors Additional Requirements

Earn a grade of “C” or above in courses that will count toward the diploma, and

Have a grade point average of “B” or above, and

Complete a career-technical program resulting in 8-10 credits, and

The student must earn a state-recognized certification or certificate of technical achievement in the career-technical program

So, What Are My Course Choices?

All freshmen (9th graders) must take:3 trimesters of English (lit 9., comp 9., & English 9 plus)

2-3 trimesters of Math ( Algebra I – 1, 2, 3 or accelerated Geometry 1,2)

2 trimesters of either Biology or Earth Science

Parent Access: prior password at MS still works here at LPHS. Keep in safe place. If lost, must open a new password/account.
