IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH Mattoon, Illinois
ST. COLUMCILLE CHURCH Sullivan, Illinois MAY 12, 2019
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
“I give my sheep eternal life.”
John 10:27-30
Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings
INTRODUCTION
In next Sunday’s Gospel, (May 19), we live in a caustic environment, where kindness, love or renewal are often mocked as soft or unrealistic. It can be legitimately discouraging. But the word from the beginning was that it would not be easy, and the pathway would be through pain. Nothing is achieved without imagination, and today’s readings provide a vision for those of us willing to continue the quest for something new. Like the early Christians, we can help to create a renewed earth.

A Pilgrim’s Progress…. Just as throughout the month of May we honor Mary as the Mother of God and our spiritual mother (given to all his disciples by her son Jesus Christ as he hung on the cross), today we honor all those who have been Mother for us throughout all the years of our lives. When we honor Mary as the Mother of God we proclaim the truth about her son. As Catholic Christians we believe Jesus Christ is one person with both a divine and a human nature. He is totally God and totally man. Conceived within her by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary gave birth to one person, totally God and totally man. You and I received our physical life from our human parents. When we refer to our moms we never say she is the mother of our physical body, we say she is our mother, even though we received our immortal souls from God. When we proclaim Mary as Mother of God as Catholics have done from the Apostolic period we are proclaiming that Jesus Christ is one person, human and divine. As we honor our mothers today let us do so first by giving thanks to God for their life, their love and sacrifice, and remembering to always ask Mary to pray for them from her place in Heaven.
