About the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

St. John Paul II had a great love for Sr. Faustina and the image of Divine Mercy. She was the first saint he canonized in the new mil-

lennia. Jesus requested of St. Faustina that the Second Sunday of Easter be set aside to honor His Divine Mercy, a request which was

fulfilled by St. John Paul II. He loved the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and promoted it. In one of his talks he said that the more he used

the Chaplet the more his list of intentions grew beyond forgiveness for himself. He said he would pray parts of it whenever he was

alerted to someone's sickness, death, or entrapment by Satan. When he passed a cemetery, a monument, a hospital, an ambulance, or a

makeshift highway memorial for a car accident victim; when he read a headline or hear a news report announcing a death or serious

sin, I pray to the Father: "For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world."

He said, “We cannot always know when someone may die, be approaching death, or be tricked by the father of lies into committing a

mortal sin. We can, however, offer Jesus' Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity often to our Eternal Father and trust that this offering — the

only worthy one — can save any sinner from hell.”

The Diary of St. Faustina taught him that to think of anyone as beyond salvation is to doubt the power of Jesus' sacrifice. It also deep-

ened his love for the Blessed Sacrament. “For the Divine Mercy and the Eucharist are inseparable. They are twin expressions of the

same extravagant love.”

He continued, “I wish I could say that not a day goes by when I do not pray the entire Chaplet. I wish I could say that my mind never

wanders when I pray it and that I never forget to observe the Great Hour of Mercy at 3 o’clock pm. I wish I could say that each mo-

ment of my life I place perfect trust in God and never fail to perform works of mercy at every opportunity. But I have no boast to

make of my own faithfulness, only God’s. His Divine Mercy in my life is the reason, the means, and the reward of my repentance,

which is a lifelong, minute-by-minute process.”

If the Divine Mercy message ever seems too miraculous to be true, we should remember, "the message of the cross is foolishness to

those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18). When blood and water spouted

from Christ's wounds on the cross, that power of God gushed forth as a fountain of mercy. And Jesus promised St. Faustina and us that

that same blood and water become rays of infinite healing when we open our arms and our hearts at the foot of the cross and proclaim

simply, "Jesus, I trust in You."

My brothers and sisters in Christ, take time every day to reflect on God’s mercy in your life, be grateful the blessings you have re-

ceived and invoke his mercy and love on those you know who are struggling, victims of violence, your enemies, your loved ones, and

on yourself. May he reward your faithfulness and trust. Jesus I trust in you!

– Fr. Bob

Paschal Candle

This year we have chosen a Paschal Candle named “UPON THIS ROCK”. The Paschal Candle bears all the usual Paschal markings, but

uniquely adds Petrine symbols to the full set of typical Paschal markings. The colors are ivory-white, red, gray, gold and silver. There is

a lower level of color-infused appliques that includes a (gray) rock foundation. This specifically refers to Peter. After Jesus chose Simon

as His apostle, He immediately ‘looked at him and said, “'You are Simon son of John; you are to be called Cephas' “ (a name rendered in Aramaic as “the Rock”). (John 1:42). Later Jesus said the words, “…You are Peter and on this rock I will build my communi-

ty…” (Mt. 16:18). Again describing the wax appliques, the rock foundation has an insert of an upside down cross, with a gold and a

silver key(s) crisscrossed over the white upside-down cross. St. Peter, of course, was traditionally known to have been crucified upside

down, since he humbly requested a manner of crucifixion different than His Lord, Jesus Christ. Lastly, the gold and silver waxen keys

represent the fact that Peter was given the keys to the kingdom by Jesus, Himself.

Peter was “singled out from the rest of the Apostles” and “given…the titles…foundation stone, key bearer, and shepherd…These are titles* known to all the Apostles as belonging to the Messiah”. Peter’s appointment was similar to Moses’ request to God that He ap-

point a new leader (after he, Moses, was gone) so that God’s people would “ ‘not be like sheep without a shepherd’ (Num. 27:17.)”.

Jesus chose Peter, and after His resurrection, He emphasized the shepherding role by asking Peter three times to “Feed my lambs…

Look after my sheep.… Feed my sheep…”(John. 21:15-17.) The uppermost symbol on this Paschal candle artistically depicts sheep in a

color-infused applique trimmed in a gold band.

Each year Holy Name of Jesus Parish accepts a memorial gift to purchase the Paschal Candle, which must be purchased each year. This

year, 2016, the Paschal Candle was donated in loving memory of Vic and Violette Behring by their children; Ron, Ken and Deb.

If you would like to memorialize your loved ones next year please contact the Parish Center for specifics on the 2017 Paschal Candle.

Thank you,

Praying Three Ways Retreat

April 22-24: Three types of prayer will be de-scribed and practiced: Praying with icons, Visio Divina and creating mandala patterns. Nature as a Spiritual Practice Retreat

April 29-May 1: Separated as we have been from the natural world for generations, relearning our shared language with crea-tion is a slow but essential prayer that draws memories back into the present. Scripture, the tradition, worship, prayer and other formational practices serve as kind of a grammar for these memo-ries. But the primary teacher for us will be nature itself. Presented by Mark Mehlos. This retreat begins with Friday supper at 7 p.m. and concludes with the noon meal on Sunday. Cost includes overnight accommodations, delicious buffet meals, and program fees.

Catholic Charities Love Thy Neighbor Appeal As St. Alberto Hurtado used to say, "We are all invited to give until it hurts". It is not easy, but we can guarantee you that you will receive a thousand to one in return! In years' past we have asked you to help local families with utility assistance; assistance to help

keep their lights and heat on, but experience has taught us that while the needs of the people we serve include utilities, there is still so much more! Our mission is to help the person where they are at and not with what we think they need. In other words, we help the person, not only their needs. By making a contribution to Catholic Charities, your generosity will allow us to do the works of mercy that Christ calls us to do. You can donate online at www.cclse.org. Thank you and God Bless!
