Then, once the dust has settled, thoughts will inevitably turn to loot. Instead of just handing over some coins though, you might consider the benefits of mixing in some personal items too. Adding personal possessions to loot can have several effects, firstly, it implies the van- quished had a life beyond four rounds of combat. At the very least this may encourage a more nuanced approach to future inter- actions. Heck, it may even direct some spotlight to characters with social skills! Suggesting this "humanity" in monsters is not about evoking sympathy, because, let's be honest, most goblins are cowardly, violent, and impulsive creatures that have it coming. Suggesting humanity in your monsters is actually about evoking humility in the characters by implying that things are going on beyond the immediate sphere of their influence. Or, to put it another way, it's a sign- post letting the players know you have a whole wide world ready to be explored. Lastly, never underestimate how pivotal these little things may be. They may spawn whole storylines, and, used frequently enough, they can serve as clues, or be fore-shadowing macguffins without being jarring. So, if you decide to put some things in a creature's pocket, consider useful items, things that suggest past or future action, and, of course, some truly banal items. You never know where they might lead.
