Scotland’s largest city, once the ‘second city of the Empire’, has re-invented itself as a ‘happening’ place, with a vibrant nightlife, great pubs and restaurants, incredible shopping choice and a style all of its own.

Merchant CityThis is the area east of Buchanan Street and towards the Cathedral, a reminder of the original city entrepreneurs - the tobacco barons who once traded with the Americas and built the prosperous foundations of the later city. (Glasgow still has a Jamaica Street and a Virginia Street.) Today the entrepreneurial spirit thrives in the form of small designer outlets making a rewarding excursion for shoppers.

More ShoppingThe city offers practically every British High Street name but also plenty of individuality. Glasgow is one of the top retail centres in the UK, with the Buchanan Galleries as a flagship mall. Within easy walking distance

at the other end of Buchanan Street, Princes Square is of a more intimate scale. However, there is plenty of choice on the grid between Sauchiehall Street and Argyll Street - and all this before exploring Byres Road by Glasgow University in the West End or the Italian Centre.

City of ArchitectureOften described as Scotland’s finest Victorian city, Glasgow city centre offers a wealth of architectural detail for visitors able to look above shop-window height! An introduction to the city’s architecture can be enjoyed at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture and Design. Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s masterpiece, Glasgow School of Art, also offers tours.

How to use this folderThis folder is full of information on the best places to visit in this area. At the front you will find leaflets and information on local attractions, followed by a new section on More Great Things to See & Do and Places to Eat. For information on attractions further afield, have a look at the national map and ‘Things to See and Do in the Rest of Scotland’ listing at the centre of this folder. This is followed by leaflets on other attractions, many of which may be within easy reach of where you are staying.

More Cultural VenuesIt’s easy to dip into Glasgow’s cultural life: The Gallery of Modern Art, Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery; the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery; the Burrell Collection and the new Riverside Museum. Explore the dark past of murderer Patrick Maxwell at Newark Castle before being transported to the serenity of Glasgow Cathedral with its magnificent nave and choir.

EntertainmentThe SSE Hydro is the latest landmark on Glasgow’s skyline. The 12,000-seat arena is the largest entertainments venue in Scotland, built specifically for concerts and events. The Hydro hosts around 140 events each year, including music concerts, as well as being a venue for major comedy stars and sporting events.

On the WaterOn the Clyde coast you can take a trip ‘doon the watter’ in the PS Waverley, the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer. The Forth & Clyde canal starts at Bowling near Dumbarton and runs all the way to the Firth of Forth at Grangemouth, connecting with the Union Canal at the Falkirk Wheel.

World Heritage at New LanarkNowhere else in Scotland is quite like the setting of New Lanark. The power of the water here enabled the development of cotton mills. Before the end of the 18th century, it was the largest single industrial development in Scotland - and also a Utopian experiment in employing and educating a community. Today, the old village survives intact as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

GlenGoyne tour £9.00 per personThe definitive tour round the place where it all happens; slowly. Enjoy a Glengoyne 12 Year Old, overlooking our waterfall and glen. Witness men doing very little as they nurse the spirit through our swan-necked copper beasts. At Glengoyne the clocks have no hands. Each tour includes a £5 off voucher for any Glengoyne 70cl (45 minutes).

Wee tastinG tour £12.00 per personJust like above, but with an additional tasting of Glengoyne 18 Year Old Highland Single Malt Whisky. Two great drams and an hour of fun. (1 hour)

tastinG tour £25.00 per personEnjoy a dram of 12 Year Old and all the fun of the Glengoyne Tour, followed by an in-depth, tutored tasting of three of our finest Highland Single Malts – 15 Year Old, 18 Year Old and the distillery exclusive Glengoyne Teapot Dram, recently named one the “Worlds 100 Whiskies to Try Before You Die”. (1½ hours)

Whisky anD ChoColate MatChinG £25.00 per personA delicious insight into what happens when world class Single Malt Whisky and chocolate collide. Enjoy a dram of 12 Year Old and all the fun of the Glengoyne tour, followed by a unique whisky and chocolate experience. You will match two more whiskies (including our multi-award winning 21 Year Old) with four handmade chocolates to create a sensory experience that will live long in the memory (1 ½ hours)

Master oF Malt session £60.00 per personCreate your very own, unique Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This unique experience lets you create YOUR Glengoyne, the way YOU want it. After a tasting of 12 Year Old Highland Single Malt and an in-depth distillery tour, it’s off to the Sample Room to assume the role of Honorary Malt Master. Taste 10ml samples from five very different Glengoyne 1997 casks and experience for yourself the effects that oak species, cask manufacture and previous fill have on the spirit, before constructing your own, unique, Cask Strength, Un-Chill Filtered Glengoyne 17 Year Old. Leave the distillery with a spring in your step, a 200ml bottle of your one-off creation and a clearer understanding of the crucial role our own Malt Master plays in making Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Whisky. (1 ½ hours)

no1. Warehouse £80.00 per personWield your dug. Dip two casks. Drink the drams. Bottle your favourite. After enjoying a Glengoyne Cask Strength whilst gazing over our waterfall and an in-depth distillery tour, you will enter the hallowed No.1 Warehouse, armed with your dipping dug, so called because they were “man’s best friend.” The dug was once used by the wily warehouseman to dip casks surreptitiously. Plunge your dug, pull two healthy drams from a 1st Fill Sherry cask and 1st Fill Bourbon barrel and retire to a safe haven for leisurely oral analysis. Now for the tricky bit – it’s back to No.1 Warehouse to select which cask from which to draw enough to fill your 200ml bottle, which we’ve rather thoughtfully included in the price. (2 hours) Additional bottles are available for £35.00.

the Master Class £150.00 per personThe most in-depth and comprehensive distillery tour in Scotland.Unique to Glengoyne, the Master Class offers the most in-depth and comprehensive distillery tour in Scotland. This specialised tour includes a visit to the Glengoyne warehouses which are not normally open to the public and explores the key areas of whisky making in some depth. This experience includes tastings of Glengoyne 12 and 18 Year Old Highland Single Malt, 3 Glengoyne Single Cask whiskies and 6 sherry samples. Guests will have the opportunity to create their very own Glengoyne Highland Single Malt in the whisky Sample Room. A light lunch is provided. At the end of the visit, guests are presented with a 200ml bottle of their one-off creation and a Master Class certificate. (5 hours)

At the heart of Malmaison Glasgow is Martin Wishart’s brand new restaurant The Honours.

With its glittering domed ceilings and relaxed ‘brasserie-style’ service, The Honours is truly a step up from the usual restaurant fayre.

The critically-acclaimed menu and luxurious but relaxed atmosphere has caused a real stir in the city. Featuring a mix of traditional and modern French cuisine, The Honours is available for lunch, dinner and private dining.

Next door our not to be missed brand new Mal Bar is the best place in town to grab a crafty cool beer or treat yourself to a cocktail or two.

THE JOURNEYFort William to Mallaig

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting at the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan.

Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.

The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.

FORT WILLIAM TO MALLAIG

HOW TO GET TO FORT WILLIAM...

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.
