about

harwicha traditional historic maritime town in essex, harwich is home

to around 18,000 residents and host to a wealth of activities

including shopping, historical attractions, wildlife, cycling,

coastal walking, eating, drinking, and boat excursions.

Located close to Felixstowe, Ipswich, Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea, the popular seaside location of Harwich is the most northern coastal town in Essex and sits along the estuaries of the Stour and Orwell rivers.

The town was built on a grid pattern in the 13th century by the Earl of Norfolk to exploit its strategic riverside position and has long been a must-see destination locally as a result of its history as a maritime town.

Today, its quaint streets are filled with the hustle and bustle of modern life – a scenic patchwork of old and new. The promenade, which first opened in 1853, is often host to local residents relaxing with a lunchtime snack or warm coffee. Smaller ferries regularly leave the pier headed for Felixstowe and Shotley, while Stena Line provides the most direct route to Holland from the south of England with their larger ferries, which leave Harwich International Port both day and night.

in north essex, the historic town of harwich has long

prided itself on its maritime connections.

harwich first became a naval base in 1657 and is where the

pilgrim fathers first built the mayflower boat, which carried

english puritans to north america. In 2020, there are plans

for a replica of this boat to sail to america to mark the 400th

anniversary and many celebrations will be taking place to

celebrate this special occasion.

As well as currently being able to visit the Mayflower Project and watch the replica boat being built, you can also take a wander along Harwich’s beaches, which offer panoramic views of the local countryside and boating community. In the summer, regular boat tours can take you to watch the resident seals or drop you off at the neighbouring towns of Felixstowe or Shotley for a day-trip in the sun.

Harwich also boasts local attractions including the Electric Palace, which was built in 1911 and is one of Britain’s oldest unaltered purpose-built cinemas, and the Redoubt Fort, which was built in 1808 and can be dated back to the Napoleonic Wars. It’s also home to the UK’s second busiest passenger ferry port and an attractive lifeboat station with an offshore lifeboat that was in service until 1984.

Thanks to the Maritime Heritage Trail and guided walking tours conducted during summer months, you will hear anecdotes from when Samuel Pepys was an MP for the town in the 1660s, or how Sir Thomas Lipton, tea millionaire, once owned a shop in Market Street. The Pier Hotel, which sits along the quayside, first opened in September 1860 and the Low Lighthouse Maritime Museum was built in 1818.

The Treadwheel Crane, which was built in 1667, is based on a Roman design and acted like a large hamster wheel for two men walking inside – it is the only example of such engineering in Britain. The famous seafarers Hawkins, Drake and Frobisher all sailed from Harwich during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I on various expeditions and there’s plenty to be learnt about them throughout the local museums.

a town of hurry and business, not much of gaiety and pleasure;yet the inhabitants seem warm in their nests and some of them are very rich.

the great outdoorsCycle the 25-mile long route along the River Colne to Harwich Pier.

WALKINGThere are many great local walks to do from your home in George Street, including taking a stroll along Dovercourt Bay beach or following The Essex Way – a long-distance footpath that stretches for 82 miles across Essex.

A 16-mile shorter walk will take you to the equally historic neighbouring town of Manningtree, where you can then return to Harwich by train. There are also walks along the Stour estuary that offer beautiful views over Suffolk and Wrabness, plus the chance to pass by Grayson Perry’s innovatively designed ‘A House for Essex’.

CYCLINGRoute 51 of The National Cycle Network passes through Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex and finishes in Harwich. As a long-distance ride, it’s more suitable for energetic and adventurous cyclists, but can be picked up in sections by any cycling enthusiast.

Part of the route is 25 miles long and forms part of the North Sea Cycle Route, which starts in Colchester by the tourist information centre and heads to Wivenhoe along the River Colne. It then proceeds through to Harwich along country roads, finishing by Harwich Pier.
