Homework • In cooperation with the Shawnee Mission District

homework policy, each student is expected to complete 40 minutes of homework each night. Homework is usually not given a grade. Homework assignments are generally reinforcing the skills or strategies learned in the classroom.

• Homework assignments are most successful when a parent or adult is available to answer questions and give guidance. Please check your child’s homework before it is returned to school. The goal is to make students responsible learners.

Rocket Math Practice• “Rocket Math” is a program to help students master their math

facts. Students begin at multiplication on step A and work through the alphabet. Students need to practice daily and have been taught how to do this. Please set a 1 minute timer and have your child practice the step they are on 2 times each night out loud saying each problem and answer. We will test them on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please keep your “Rocket Math” practice book all year. If your child passes their test on Tuesday, they will need to practice the next step for Friday. They will not be replaced due to cost.

• Step you need to begin practicing this week: ___________

• Class average step: ___________

Home/School Communication

• A take-home folder will be going home daily. This is to be emptied and returned to school every morning. It is imperative that parents review work and assignments, along with school and class notes daily. This way you will be aware of your child’s progress by seeing his/her completed work.

• Not all papers will be graded. Activities may be done independently, with a partner, or even in groups. Please feel free to communicate any questions or concerns by sending a note in your child’s take-home Silver Folder, leaving a voicemail message, or emailing me.

Birthday Treats• Birthdays are an exciting time. Of course we

all love to celebrate them in our classroom. This year, Westwood View is guiding our students to lead healthy, happy lives. Therefore, we ask that no birthday treats of any kind are sent to school.

• I would also like to mention that birthday invitations should be mailed from home and not sent to school so that we do not hurt any feelings.

Late Work Policy

• Students will be given two days to make up work after and absence. Work may be requested by calling the office on the morning of the absence. Work can be sent home with a sibling or be given to the student upon returning to school.

• If any prolonged illness or other special circumstances interfere with the child being able to make up the work within the time frame, I will always be flexible and willing to make special arrangements. Please contact me at the earliest convenience.

Classroom Management

Our classroom rule is:

We will show respect and responsibility at all times.

Page 13: Welcome to Fourth Grade’s “Back To School” Night!.

Fun Friday• Each week, the class will earn minutes towards a

“Fun Friday.” • Classes can earn minutes by using the restrooms

quickly and quietly, getting compliments from specials teachers, whole-class turning in homework on time, whole-class with no tardies, demonstrating good teamwork, and working appropriately in class.

• Some examples of a “Fun Friday” would be stinky feet Friday, SSR at the mini park, and eating lunch in the classroom.

Python Points

Python Points are a form of “money” that the kids may earn for good behavior. Students may have to pay a teacher a

Python Point for poor choices made during the school day.

At the end of the quarter, they have the opportunity to enter a raffle to win

prizes.
