In the shadow of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, Fort William is a natural touring centre. Grand landscapes such as Glencoe, Glen Nevis, Morar and Ardnamurchan make this a rewarding area for scenic tours and outdoor activities.

Fort William - Outdoor CapitalWelcome to the Outdoor Capital of the UK. Whether you want to test your nerve on downhill mountain biking tracks, scale peaks, spot iconic wildlife such as eagles or otters, take to the water, or simply admire the breathtaking landscape, it’s all here for you in the Outdoor Capital.

Highest, DeepestMany visitors come to Fort William in order to climb Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and at 4406ft / 1344m it is a serious day’s walk. Another record-breaking feature, Loch Morar is the deepest loch in the UK at over 1000ft / 305m and reputedly the home of a monster.

The Road - and Railway - to the Isles‘The Road to the Isles’ today is the Fort William to Mallaig route via picturesque Glenfinnan, Arisaig, Lochailort and Morar. A rewarding drive, with especially good panoramas of the Small Isles and also spectacular white beaches between Arisaig and Morar, the (steam) train journey is even more worthwhile. Mallaig Heritage Centre tells the story of this ferry and fishing port at the end of the line. Mallaig also has a ferry link to Skye and to the remote community of Inverie in the rugged mountains of Knoydart.

Almost an IslandArdnamurchan is the peninsula stretching westwards beyond Loch Linnhe, its tip being the most westerly

mainland point in Britain. It is ‘almost an island’, approached by ferry via Corran and the island of Mull, or by winding scenic roads through Ardgour and Moidart. Some features of interest in the area are: Strontian - giving its name to the element strontium - with its old lead mines; the fascinating and ancient Ariundle Oakwood, a national nature reserve; the Nàdurra Visitor Centre; and the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.

Mountain SpectacleBen Nevis is only one of many peaks in this dramatic area. Nevis Range mountain centre near Fort William features a gondola ride to 2150ft / 650m on Aonach Mor. These slopes are also the location of Britain’s longest downhill mountain bike track, and site of the 2014 World Cup. Glencoe has not only a spectacular landscape, including Scotland’s narrowest mainland ridge, the Aonach Eagach, but also a grim tale of clan conflict and massacre to add to the ambience. The Mamores, accessible from Kinlochleven or Glen Nevis, and the Grey Corries south of Spean Bridge and stretching away from Ben Nevis, are two more mountain areas.

Great Glen WaysThe Caledonian Canal runs coast to coast from Loch

Linnhe to the Moray Firth. Designed by Thomas Telford, one of the most spectacular examples of his engineering is the series of canal locks at Banavie, near Fort William, known as ‘Neptune’s Staircase’. The linking of natural lochs to man-made canal allows a wide range of cruising and water sport options at various locations. The Great Glen Way can be enjoyed by foot and bike.

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

Book Online now at: www.jacobitetrain.com

The line used in filming the Harry Potter movies.

THE JOURNEYFort William to Mallaig

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting at the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan.

Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.

The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.

FORT WILLIAM TO MALLAIG

HOW TO GET TO FORT WILLIAM...

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.

Simply grilled meats and fish, vegetarian and lighter bistro style dishes feature here. We make all of our own soups, casseroles, terrines, hot-smoked salmon and duck. We home cure herring, bake our own bread daily and make all of our own ice creams and desserts.

THE RESTAURANTThe Art of Refreshment

The restaurant occupies one of the original parts of this charming old coaching inn with dark wood panelling and original paintings by Scottish and French artists. We offer a five course set menu here which makes extensive use of locally sourced seasonal produce.

Our wine list features a wide range of new and old world vintages, with a house selection of around thirty wines under thirty pounds and an old world influenced fine wine section.

The restaurant menu is written daily with consideration for the produce available on the day, the number of

guests booked and any dietary requirements. Our passion for fresh local produce coupled with a sensitive

culinary style combine to create mouth-watering food that retains its natural flavours and textures.

In recognition of the standard of food servedhere, the restaurant has held two AA Rosettes for many years and has won several awards includingthe prestigious Flavour of Scotland Thistle award.

A recent example menu can be found on our website www.glenfinnan.co.uk.

• Camusdarach, the famous “Local Hero” beach, is 1.5 miles north by car or on foot

Golf & beach for all the family

Golf has been played at Traigh since about

1900, but it was originally a private course,

only for the use of the owners and their

friends! The old layout was very cramped – in

fact several fairways crossed over each other.

Golfers had to share the ground with dairy

cows up until the 1990s, and the cows were

kept off the greens with fencing wire. This all

changed in 1993 when the owner and golf

enthusiast, Jack Shaw Stewart, invited the

well-known Scottish golf architect, John

Salvesen, to redesign the course. John had

been Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf

Course of St. Andrews, and Chairman of the

Championship Committee (responsible for

The Open). He designed and improved

courses all over Britain and abroad, but he was

especially proud of his work on the

spectacular nine-hole course at Traigh.

John used the natural contours of the hills

that rise up from the beach (originally sand

dunes) to create "a fair challenge to all levels

of golfer – but a course that is great fun to play

on, so that one wants to play it again".

During the rebuilding of the course invaluable

help and advice was provided by Jimmy

MacDonald M.B.E, who was Head

Greenkeeper at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

Jimmy was a native of Arisaig, and knew the

ground well.

The history of golf at Traigh

Hamish and Jock were having a cup of coffee in the Traigh clubhouse.

I’m no’ playing another round with Jimmy McKay”, says Jock, “he’s a cheat. This morning he lost his ball, and he found it just two feet from the green!”

“Well, that’s possible,” says Hamish.

“No’ when I had his ball in my pocket.”
