CAP News

148 School LaneOur garden is on a sloping corner plot. The large trees (including an elm) mean the front garden is largely dry and shaded in summer but is beautiful in spring. The back garden is on two levels linked by steps and island beds. There is a small pond full of frogs. This garden is totally private and still evolving after thirty five years here, mainly because I always think a thriving plant will look better somewhere else! Partly wheelchair accessible. Please, no dogs.

242 School LaneOur front garden has an herbaceous border, and a large elm tree which causes dryness to one side. The rear garden in lawned, with easy-care borders. In recent years, an infection of honey fungus has caused the loss of many shrubs and trees. Pots of plants add interest and protection from the fungus. We have recently installed a greenhouse. Please, no dogs. Wheelchair accessible.

343a School LaneA modern garden with a vintage feel. It is a blend of blues and greys with mainly flowering shrubs and planters. This garden gives a reflective feel with small sitting areas mirrored to reflect the foliage around. Wheelchair accessible.

427 School Lane Situated behind the Village Hall this garden occupies the path of the Old Walton Canal with original lock walls still evident. The planting is mixed with annuals, perennials, lows shrubs and mature trees. There is a small fish pond with several mature koi. Bee hives occupy a small patio area. The aim is to keep the garden colourful with borders and planters. This year I have a new greenhouse and hope to grow tomatoes and bee friendly annuals. Wheelchair accessible.

5Coronation Cottage, 36 School Lane This is a cottage garden with colourful borders at all seasons. The front has a formal atmosphere with mainly annuals giving a spectrum of colour. The rear of the house is the “engine room” of the entire garden. Enhanced by two lovely water features, the greenhouse and potting sheds ensure the garden thrives all year.

6Station House, Greenside Our garden is built on the site of the old Sandal & Walton railway station. The garden retains the original platform wall, public footpath and one of the lawns is the original station platform. Trains carrying sand to Monckton Glass Works pass occasionally. The garden itself incorporates different themes, infinity, quarry and sunken, so lots to look at together with a “walk down memory lane”. Partly wheelchair accessible

725 GreensideThe area to the front comprises a lawn surrounded by shrubs and roses. Walk through the wrought iron gate and enter into the rear sloping garden with a rockface backdrop. Here you will find a veranda, lawn, beds with a variety of shrubs and flowers and a pond. Climb the steps and follow the path leading to our “Secret Garden”. This area is a haven for birds and wildlife. The mature terraced garden consists of a variety of trees and shrubs, seating areas and a sunken lawned garden. Partially wheelchair accessible.

832 Woodfield ParkA Prosecco pit stop. Limited parking (4 cars on bungalow drive) An attractive front garden in two parts with rockery plants and small shrubs. A passage way leads to a larger garden with open views across the country side. Well stocked colourful beds ,a water feature ,stone statues, and urns . Look out for the Elves village and the Buddha bed (new this year) Notice a small arboretum (no access) well stocked with betula, prunus, viburnum, robinia, firs, malus crataegus, and various other colourful shrubs. Please enjoy (sorry no dogs)

9Walton Primary AcademyWalton Primary Academy is delighted to be part of Walton Open Gardens 2018. We hope that you can find time to visit the school to see our contributions to this wonderful community event.

106 Oaklands CroftWe moved into Walton in 1992. The garden was well populated with trees (most have been removed sadly) but little else. We have tried to build a garden of contrasts, so you will find a pond and stream, a little meadow plus fruit trees, roses and shrubs: it is not a tidy patch! We don’t claim to garden organically but encourage wildlife. Much of the garden is not wheelchair accessible unfortunately. Please, no dogs.

1162 the BalkThe design of our garden, which is on two levels, changes regularly to accommodate our needs. The seating areas reflect how we can enjoy the sun from dawn to dusk, capturing the different views. We have a variety of shrubs and in the summer months bedding plants give additional colour. Last year we enlarged our pond, added a small bridge and a decking area. Birds bathe in the small waterfall and rockery. With horses and sheep behind us we can fully enjoy the sounds of the countryside. Wheelchair accessible.

12Finch Cottage, 133 Shay Lane (Soap House Yard)When we moved here in 2000 the garden was a complete wilderness, but the triangular shape and gentle slope had potential. Water is pumped from the patio on the lower level to appear as if a waterfall coming from the old canal wall. Our aim has been to create a garden which invites you to walk around its paths, with colour interest at all times of year. We shall be serving Pimms on the upper patio, where you can browse a photo album which shows the development of the garden. Plants for sale. Partly wheelchair accessible.

What is Pentecost? For Christians, Pentecost is a holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus’ death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called “the church.” Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective, since the Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens it. Thus Pentecost is the church’s birthday.
