R. Dumfries & Galloway Cover 2016-17.indd 1 04/11/2015 12:02
The quiet network of rural roads makes countryside touring very rewarding. There are historic castles and other attractions, and a great selection of rural craft-shops, galleries and cafes. It is also a walkers paradise.
Inspiration for ArtistsThe association of Kirkcudbright and E.A. Hornel, one of the ‘Glasgow Boys’, is perhaps the best-known artistic link - but plenty of contemporary artists also find inspiration in Dumfries & Galloway. The annual ‘Spring Fling’ brings together a wealth of creative talent. The hills, woodlands, coastline, pasture and hedgerow, plus the colourful frontages of the little towns, make South-West Scotland a visual delight.
Galloway’s ForestsThe 620 sq km Galloway Forest Park was designated as such about 70 years ago. Its mature woodlands and miles of marked trails are open to all. The Southern Upland Way cuts through, and an enjoyable forest drive called
The Raiders Road, linking Clatteringshaws Loch in the west and New Galloway. Glentrool is especially scenic. Walking, mountain biking, watching the abundance of wildlife, relaxing away from it all…
Gardens GaloreThe benign climate makes Galloway a great place for gardens. Notably Castle Kennedy Gardens, Galloway House Gardens and Threave Garden, Logan Botanic Garden in the Rhins of Galloway is noted for its exotica from the southern hemisphere.
High in the UplandsThe Lowther Hills lie in the heart of the Southern Uplands, with high and rolling hilltops and the highest

village in Scotland, Wanlockhead. At 1531ft (467m), it is noted for its fascinating Museum of Lead Mining. You can go gold panning, as these hills hold a variety of minerals. The lower reaches of Nithsdale lead on to Drumlanrig Castle with its magnificent art collection.
Colourful TownsThe ‘Queen of the South’, Dumfries is an important centre with a good range of shops and a history, back to its founding as a royal burgh in the 12th century. The town is associated with Robert Burns, who spent the last years of his life here. Nearby are the moated medieval Caerlaverock Castle, and Sweetheart Abbey.
Castle Douglas’s shops sell an especially good range of produce. This old established market centre is Dumfries & Galloway’s official ‘Food Town’. Dalbeattie is an attractive community notable for its granite buildings.
Picturesque Newton Stewart is the gateway to the Galloway hills. Kirkcudbright, the official ‘Artists’ Town’, has a very active cultural life, with festivities throughout the summer. Wigtown is Scotland’s Booktown, Stranraer for the Rhins, including picturesque Portpatrick and Scotland`s “Lands End” the Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland, Creetown for its museums, Gatehouse of Fleet for the Mill on the Fleet.
UNESCO Biosphere ReserveGalloway and Southern Ayrshire is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Uniquely in Scotland it has been recognised by UNESCO for the amazing combination of landscapes, wildlife and culture in conjunction with communities that care for their environment.
Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Explore a world of plants
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, founded in 1670, is a world renowned centre for plant research, conservation and education. Its four remarkable Gardens – the “Botanics” in Edinburgh; the mountain-side Benmore in Argyll; Dawyck in the wooded hills of the Scottish Borders; and Logan on a Gulf Stream warmed peninsula in Galloway – differ in topography, soils and climate, enabling an exceptionally wide range of plants to be grown. Together they constitute one of the richest plant collections on Earth, with more that 15,000 species in cultivation.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored and supported through Grant-in-Aid by the Scottish Government’s Environment and Forestry Directorate (ENFOR).
