Dear Principals and Teachers,

As you know, research indicates that arts education provides the tools necessary to succeed in life by developing critical thinkers, building self-confidence and learning to work collaboratively with others. The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative’s “Arts For Every Student” (AFES) program is a resource for you to embrace the arts as a strategy for teaching that best matches your students’ needs, and offers high-quality arts and cultural experiences to you and your students. The enclosed brochure includes options for you to review and select for your school this year.

When your school participates with AFES, the DC Collaborative will work with a designated teacher or staff member at your school to coordinate program logistics. This includes transportation for offsite events as well as in-school programming support. You may invite professional artists to come to the school to perform or make presentations, sign up for professional development workshops that will help you connect the arts to advance achievement in other academic subjects, or bring the arts to your students in a variety of other ways.

I encourage your school to participate in Arts For Every Student. I also encourage educators to take full advantage of the professional development offerings provided in the separate brochure. DCPS is committed to providing all students with an engaging educational experience that prepares them for success. I hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to bring our content standards and curriculum to life!

Sincerely,

Kaya HendersonChancellor

Dear Principals and Teachers,We are pleased to provide you with a selection of high-quality arts and humanities experiencesto benefit students from across Washington, DC.

Throughout these pages, you can plan some of the highlights of the academic year, making a lasting impression on your students, some of whom will be experiencing professional theater and museum arts exhibitions for the very first time.

We provide arts experiences to thousands of students each year with nearly half-a-million students taking fieldtrips through Arts for Every Student (AFES) since our founding. We are entering our 16th year of providing free transportation and tickets to DC Public School and Public Charter School students and are looking forward to growing our stellar roster of members; adding to our listing of arts experiences; and delivering services to more students.

We invite you to explore our catalogue featuring a wide variety of arts opportunities for students of all ages. Explore the many wonderful arts institutions which offer spectacular arts experiences that will advance your curriculum and readily map to standards and to the Teaching and Learning Framework.

Washington, DC, is home to some of the greatest arts institutions in the world. Each DC student studying Shakespeare should see it acted on the stage through a Shakespeare Theatre Company production at the Harman Center for the Arts; and each DC student studying U.S. History should have the chance to see the Star-Spangled Banner on display at the National Museum of American History. These are just two examples of how curriculum can become dynamic and engaging by connecting with the significant resources here in our backyard.

We are committed to ensuring all students have access to the arts and humanities because we believe arts access leads to student success.

Sincerely,

Louise KennellyExecutive Director

What is the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative?

The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative works to strengthen and promote the arts and humanities as basic and integral to a high-quality education for all students in DC public and public charter schools. Comprised of more than 80 arts and cultural organizations, DC Collaborative initiatives include: Arts for Every Student, Professional Development for Teachers and Arts Educators, and the Arts Education Initiative.

What is Arts for Every Student?Arts for Every Student (AFES) provides increased access for all DC public and public charter school students to attend arts and cultural events offered by our member providers. Through this program, DC public and public charter schools are eligible for free tickets and transportation to local cultural events, supported by the DC Collaborative. Schools may select a free in-school performance as an alternative to a trip to a cultural venue.

Professional Development Workshops (PDs)also are offered through the DC Collaborative member providers to DC Public Schools and Public Charter School teachers. These workshops offer teachers the opportunity to learn innovative ways to invigorate classroom instruction by using arts techniques. Teachers work with experienced arts educators to learn to use dance, music, theater, visual arts, and the humanities to teach academic lessons and address State Learning Standards. The Professional Development Workshops can be submitted to OSSE for PLU credits towards relicensure. Please see the separate Professional Development Brochure for program information.

AFES School Partner ResponsibilitiesParticipation in the AFES program is easy! Here’s a quick snapshot of what is expected from partner schools:

• Designate a Key Communicator to serve as the main contact for the school for the AFES program.

• Attend the AFES School Orientation at the beginning of the school year.

• Familiarize yourself with the AFES opportunities on the DC Collaborative website: www.dccollaborative.org.

• Select AFES events during registration week (week of September 8th) with your colleagues.

Page 7: Welcome to DCAHEC | DCAHEC - for Every StudentStudent (AFES) Catalogue To make your experience with the AFES Online Registration system easier, we’ve created this preview guide of

7Arts for Every Student Catalogue | [email protected]

• Attend AFES events.• Complete event evaluations.• Encourage colleagues to integrate

the arts and humanities into their classrooms and schools!

For more information about the Arts for Every Student program, please refer to the AFES School Handbook, visit our website, www.dccollaborative.org, or contact our office, [email protected].

Introduction to Arts for Every Student (AFES) CatalogueTo make your experience with the AFES Online Registration system easier, we’ve created this preview guide of event offerings at cultural organizations. If you are the Key Communicator for your school, please feel free to distribute the catalogues to colleagues in your school building. This will help your colleagues select a trip that best fits their grade grouping’s learning goals and plans for the year. Please note that only Key Communicators may register the school for AFES learning experiences online.

How to use this catalogue:The first section of this catalogue lists all the events by grade grouping in a grid with corresponding curriculum ties. This grid is a helpful tool to match up classroom learning with a selected event. Fieldtrip opportunities are listed alphabetically by organization after the grid, followed by in-school opportunities. Each event will consist of a brief description of the event, date(s) offered, time(s), location, and curriculum ties.Once choices have been made for all grade groupings, the Key Communicator should visit www.dccollaborative.org to reserve tickets. The AFES School Handbook includes step-by-step instructions on registering tickets for your school. If you have not yet received your copy of the AFES School Handbook, please contact the DC Collaborative at [email protected].

Please contact our office with any questions about the Arts for Every Student program, Professional Development Workshops for teachers, or for information about the DC Arts & Humanities Education Collaborative. Our team can be reached at, [email protected].

Trip Cancellation Policy

Trips must be cancelled 30 days in advance IN WRITING. If the school must cancel within 30 days, it will be invoiced for the cost of the tickets and transportation.

Ticket Reduction Policy

Key Communicators may reduce ticket numbers by emailing [email protected]. If done within 30 days the school will be invoiced for the cost of the unused tickets.

The teacher leaves one stick of chalk for each day and promises her an extra 10 yuan if there’s not one less student when he returns. Within days, poverty forces the class troublemaker, Zhang Huike, to leave for the city to work. Minzhi, possessed of a stubborn streak, determines to bring him back. She enlists the 26 remaining pupils in earning money for her trip. She hitches to Jiangjiakou City and begins her search. The boy, meanwhile, is there, lost and begging for food. HOW THE CIVIL WAR CHANGED WASHINGTON

Presented by: Anacostia Community Museum, Smithsonian Institution Despite being specifically planned as the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., remained a small city of a few thousand residents, which was virtually deserted during its very hot summers, until the Civil War came to change the status quo both in D.C.’s physical and social landscapes. The How the Civil War Changed Washington exhibit highlights some of these changes and also narrates the personal journeys of several individuals who came to Washington as immigrants, as refugees from the war, as teachers, as clerks in the government’s war machine, and as previously enslaved African-Americans whose lives have just been changed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Displaying hundreds of historical photographs and featuring many artifacts, the exhibit will add an interesting dimension to the history of the Civil War in the nation’s capital.

Then it’s Tetris, an extremely physical piece for four dancers who flip, slide, undulate, leapfrog, and tumble over each other—arms and legs high in the air and twisted around each other to create single unified forms out of their individual bodies.

Look a little deeper though, and nesting green turtles and dancing terns are revealed, with huge whale sharks and gangly cormorants. The Gulf has hidden riches, and according to the latest science, may even come to the rescue of the spectacular but fragile Red Sea reef.

A time-honored motif for artists, the window has long signified the artist’s vision and functions as a metaphor for representational painting, which offers a ‘window’ on the world. Deceptively realistic, Wyeth’s window images are skillfully manipulated constructions utilizing multiple visual devices and vantage points (near, far, inside, outside, ground level, upstairs), reflections, landscapes seen through windows, and even windows seen through windows. Tour this special exhibition of more than 50 objects at the National Gallery, its only venue worldwide, from May 4th to November 30th, 2014. Bring a colleague and enjoy this evening of art, food, and fun!

MARVELOUS MONOTYPES!Presented by: National Gallery of ArtExplore the process of making a monotype - a unique print made by painting and drawing on a smooth surface and transferring that image to paper. The appeal of this medium lies in its spontaneity and its combination of artistic processes. Monoprinting also allows a unique translucency and quality of light very different from painting or printing on paper. Participants will practice mixing paints, preparing papers, and exploring the visual effects obtainable with a variety of tools. Suited for experienced printmakers as well as novices, this workshop encourages you to pursue your own artistic vision while solving artistic and technical problems. Best yet, the monotype process allows quality results at little expense and is easily adapted to the studio art classroom.
