FLOPPY FISH GREETING

• Cast your line toward someone in the circle.

• Reel in the fish -- the person being reeled in must flop like a fish and try to get away.

• Greet the person you reeled in.

Reading

“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”

~Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci made the first real studies of flight in the 1480's. He had over 100 drawings that illustrated his theories on bird and mechanical flight. The drawings illustrated the wings and tails of birds,

ideas for man carrying machines, and devices for the testing of wings.

Learning Targets for Camp

• I can explain the Principles of Flight.• I can demonstrate the Principles of Flight by

constructing a glider.• I can use the Engineering Design Process this

week to complete a variety of aeronautic products.

• I can reflect on my aeronautic camp experience each day in my journal.

• I can work collaboratively with others.

Hot Air Balloon

Make 3 sheets by gluing 2 pieces of tissue paper together with a 1/2 inch seam.

Page 8: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Cut excess on Edges, 2, 4, and 6.

Glue edges together.

Cut out the gore pattern.

Page 9: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Carefully place all3 of your gluedsheets together matching up the corners.

This is how the paper clipped gore pattern should look.

Page 14: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Very carefully cut along the curved edgeof the gore pattern.

Page 15: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Carefully remove the paper clips and lift off the pattern.

Apply glue 1/2 inch in on the edge.

Page 18: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Fold the gore over the glue being care-ful not to have any holes in the seams.

Page 19: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Carefully open up theballoon to get to thelast seam.

Page 20: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Repair any holes in the seams.

Page 21: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Follow the directions to cut the circle for the top of the balloon. Cover the small hole at the top of the balloon.

Page 22: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Follow the directions to complete the collar for the large bottom hole that will fit over the launcher.

Page 23: Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012.

Fit the bottom of the balloon in between the collarand staple it together.

Debrief

• Reflect on the multi-step process of constructing a balloon.

• What did you and your partner do well?

• What could you have improved?
