Take-Home Folder

• Please send your child’s GRE folder to school with them EVERY day and check it nightly. This is our main form of communication. Any notes or reminders should be sent through this folder or via email.

• Any paper placed in the folder with HW designates that it is homework. Please have your child complete and return it the following day.

Reading Workshop

• Reading is assessed by the DRA2 (Developmental Reading Assessment)

• Mini lessons followed by individual conferences, independent reading and sharing

• Reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, self-selected reading, and practicing good reading strategies

Reading Logs

• I will NOT be assigning a reading log this year; however, I do expect that students are reading nightly for 15-20 minutes

• Students may read books from home, online, the library, and books from our classroom (found in their “book baggie”)

Writing Workshop

• Writing folders & journaling

• Modeled Writing, Shared/Interactive Writing, Guided Writing, and Independent Writing

• Signs, Lists, Labels, Personal Narratives, Non-fiction, Poetry, Letters, Research

• Practice using correct capitals, punctuation, inventive spelling, and correct spelling of high frequency words

• Includes writing at home

Word Study

• Small groups and whole class – based on the Elementary Spelling Inventory

• Focus on high frequency words, vowel patterns, digraphs, blends, prefixes, suffixes etc…

• Looking for transfer of knowledge to spell new words in their writing

• Use mini lessons, word games/activities, and poetry

• If you plan a play date after school for your child, and this requires your child to leave school a different way than usual, you MUST send a note detailing the change of dismissal. Also, the other child involved in the play date, MUST have a note as well.

Birthdays

• If you would like to send in a treat for your child’s birthday please send 24 individually wrapped treats that can be passed out by your child to his/her classmates at lunch!

• If your child has allergies, it would be great if you could send in some “back-up” treats just in case
